Join Rosemary Gladstar as she invites herbal elders to share the stories of their journey into the lush world of plants in these Inner-Views.
Welcome to the first inaugural episode of Voices of our Herbal Elders! In this episode, I am joined by my dear friend David Winston.
I learned so much from David, from an inspiring story about the life-saving impact of Nettle seeds to his ability to bridge the worlds of the intellect and the Earth. I came away inspired and hopeful.
David Winston is an Herbalist and Ethnobotanist who has been in clinical practice for nearly 50 years and is an herbal consultant to physicians, herbalists and researchers throughout the USA, Europe and Canada. David is the founder/director of the Herbal Therapeutics Research Library, the dean of David Winston’s Center for Herbal Studies, and the president of Herbalist & Alchemist, Inc. David is also a founding/professional member of the American Herbalist Guild, and he is on the American Botanical Council and the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia Advisory Boards.
I hope you enjoy this Inner-View as well! If you did, please like and subscribe to our channel for notifications!

Aaawww, two of my favorite teachers on the planet 🌿💚🌿 My apprenticeship with Rosemary...many decades of David's classes at the IHS and Green Nations...the best part of my life & I never looked back. My cup runneth over because of you all and the plant world...I was called a witch by the neighborhood kids when I was about 9!!! I was somehow proud of it and guess most people would've been offended by that!! Blessings to you both...and all your peers that gave so freely to us all 💚🌿💚

Patrice, I can so relate. With my long dark hair, a rather long nose and even a small wart growing on my chin (!!), I too was sometimes called a 'little witch'. But I always took it as a compliement somehow. It wasn't until years later that I learnt that witch was an old wood for 'wise woman' or crone. We are in good company!!!

Loved this so much. I could listen to Rosemary and David all day long. I loved David's childhood story about Euell Gibbon's books. I'm in the same generation so Stalking the Wild Asparagus and Stalking the Healthful Herbs were the books that first got me started in turning that green forest wall into individual friends for life. (Remember, in the olden days, Euell used to do a TV commercial for Grapenuts. LOL the commercial ended with him saying "Kind of reminds me of wild hickory nuts."). Thank you Rosemary for starting this wonderful series. I can't wait for the next episode. You are definitely the Fairy Godmother of Modern Herbalism for me.

Oh, goodness, I never saw that commericial, but would love to!!! I never had the good fortune to meet Euell, but his books were among my earliest favorites. Sounds like we were all out 'stalking the wild asparagus', nettle and dandelion together! Surprised we never stumbled into each other on the trail!

Bringing God into this practice - it's more than just books and reading, it's talking with the plants and connecting to ther person... Another life-giving gift connecting us all.

Yes, I so agree. David is quite amazing. You might enjoy reading his Adaptogen book. Its one of my favorite herbals , so informative, well reserached, and so easy to read and digest. The Adaptogens herbs are a good group of herbs for beginners to start their studies with.

Bless you both. I will never stop learning from you. My husband and I bought a 1790s house 36 years ago so I decided to plant a colonial kitchen/ herb garden. I studied what was used back then and was so enthralled, that I kept planting and learning. There’s such wonderful energy on our 6 1/2 acre plot. It’s in the midst of an Audubon bird sanctuary. So I started learning about birds and everything else I could. I started life lists, herbariums, and almanacs to show daily high and low temps, weather, wildlife and when plants came up. I learned more than 25 years ago that the sun was getting hotter and droughts were more often. I have always followed Rosemary and honored to have met you at the International Herb Symposiums.

I'll never forget the time David was drumming on the big circle drum for us at one of our classes where he was our lecturer. He was really putting his heart and soul into it when all the sudden the drumstick tip broke through the skin of the drum! I can still see the look on David's face as we all sat there stunned! I miss you both! All my love from Kathy de Plaza

Kathy, how lovely to hear from you!!!! I remember that moment, too. It was our big Mother Drum, and David felt so badly about it. But it was like the drum was dancing so loudly and clearly. It was a magical moment. We did get the drum repaired and it lives still at Sage Mountain..

Enjoyed this interview very much. I do wish that somehow the interviewees or Rosemary could provide in the notes 1) The Latin names of mentioned plants [for instance, I've driven myself mad trying to find Holy Basil seeds; I also have grown Temperate Tulsi, believing it was the medicinal tulsi 2) Sources for seeds in particular [I have an herbal garden of some size] and other forms of plant materials for herbal practice [I do know and use Mountain Rose]. Thank you.

David your early years as a child being introduced to the plant kingdom is my story also, except my introduction was more the early 60's. I got to the point of relaxing and centering myself, that I would ask where the plant was or which one was needed and they would guide me to the right one. I marvel so much in the medicines that mother earth has to teach us. You just have to listen. Thanks for sharing
