DaVinci NEEDS this Final Cut feature...

100% agree with you! I recently switched from FCP to Resolve and this is the main thing that I miss. It's so frustrating not being able to click anywhere on the timeline to move the playhead. Even premiere has this feature, come on Blackmagic..

I agree with you 100%. Having just moved from final cut to da Vinci. I am so surprised at the usability features. They just haven’t implemented. This is the main one for me.

100% agree! Another thing that drives me crazy in Resolve is slowing down clips. In Final Cut, you can assign a shortcut to slow the clip down to 50% speed, and then it is just a single click to do it. In Resolve, it takes sooo much more clicking (and manually typing in % slowdown speed). Same thing with stabilizing clips - Final Cut: single-click shortcut, Resolve: sooo many clicks.

as someone who was born and raised on FCPX and made to the switch Resolve, i agree with you 100000% and i miss this feature so much as well as zooming on the timeline ;/

BRO.....I've spent way more time than I want to share wishing hoping and praying that DaVinci had this feature... it's almost a deal breaker for me because of the shear amount of time wasted clicking a and dragging! Thanks for making this video! I Hope that BM see's this and adds it. to the depths of my soul I hope they do hahaha

It would be a good improvement to the tool, I would propose that you make this suggestion in the Black Magic forums, so you can share the link in this or a future video and invite comments in that post to support this improvement.

Totally agree, I've been saying to all my friends for a couple of years. They all want me to switch to davinci so we can work together, I trained with a lot of tutorials and dummies videos for a few weeks non stop and I just came to the conclusion that... I just can't 😅 It's sooooo frustrating for me and so slow process without this second playhead. Also, because I am nomadic, I usually edit on the trackpad. Actually I didn't even own a mouse until last month (bought for Davinci...), simply because FCP is so trackpad friendly, that I would argue that some things can be even faster on the trackpad than the mouse 🤪

@jakefelzien You can accomplish this task by doing it on the Fairlight Page. Change you Timeline View options to also show Video. Choose the Range Mode Tool(Crosshair, to the right of the Selection Arrow Tool), Drag a "range" across Video & Audio to select the bits you want to remove(by default this adds an In/Out) and use the Ripple Delete kb shortcut. This also works with multiple Video & Audio tracks. Using this technique leaves the Playhead stationary. The only thing you're missing is the visual skimming. But if you're only looking at the waveform to remove dead spaces, this will work. Repeat to get through your A-roll cutdown. Easy. ✅

This was the primary reason I bought the speed editor when I wanted to learn Resolve! I use the secondary playhead for 1st and 2nd cuts, left hand keyboard shortcuts for cutting/trimming and right hand on the MX Master using the thumb scroll to move the timeline.

100% agree… and an additional thing that I miss so much is that in FCP, when you press you hot key to zoom in to your timeline , if will actually zoom where your secondary playhead is… which is super useful when you search for a specific point in your edit, then wants to zoom in on it … Another feature I miss is the ability to organize keywords smart bins into Folders like in Final Cut. In da Vinci, any new keyword adds a new smart bin into an automatic “folder” called keywords.. that you can’t organize. It doesn’t make sense.. it should automatically create a regular smart bin based on that keyword and let you organize them as you wish. Maybe subject for another video :)

Awesome video 😊 I have the same issue with Davinci people saying "it's not that hard, just clic and hold" but they really don't get the huge difference it is 😂 And still, I don't know if you didn't want to blow their mind too much or something but there is so much this function can do ! Literrally all shortcuts happen on playhead 🤯 You breafly said that if you have more layers it gets convoluted, I thing that's one of the aspect it actually shines. Basically, it just does it by default on the top layer OR on the selected clip 😊 - You can trim all clips at once too 🤯 - And if you develop the audio, if nothing is selected, you trim just the video to make L or J cut, or if you select the audio just trim the audio. - You can insert clips were you secondary playhead is. - If you insert a transition, it goes to the both ends, or just your edit edit point, if you are at reasonable distance 😮 - If you copy attribute (and nothing is selected) you copy the clip under it - If you paste (and nothing selected) it also happens under it. - Your default effect happens under it - Markers happen under it - In and out points too ! And all this, not only in timeline, but also in browser ("bins") 😮 I've been backpacking for the last 11 years. And I don't mean sleeping in hostel, I mean sleeping in the wood, streets and dodgy place 😅 I literrally never had a flat surface for a mouse. In fact I didn't even own one until recently (for davinci and gaming 😅). And I think, this single feature makes touch pad awesome for editing ❤ Actually, it might even make editing on trackpad FASTER than with a mouse 😮 In Davinci, just try to click and hold on a trackpad, you are going to give up in 3mn 🤣 It is the single best thing that happenned to video editing since digital 😂

You can replicate most of the with the Blade tool and DEL, but also the cut panel is build for stuff like using the DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor.

Dude yes. Totally agree. I switched from davicni from Final Cut a few months ago. This would def be a nice feature. The scroll wheel is freakin nice but yeah this would be a nice feature for sure. It’s also super annoying to not be able to click anywhere on the timeline and get the play head to move there. Seems like a very simple thing to add, haha. The edit on this video was fire btw! Love your stuff

a huge issue for me in resolve is opening a compound clip to playhead. Why dont they add this feature, i feel like its a huge design flaw and something that would make me jump ship if i saw it because its a huge part of my workflow

I know I've mentioned this before, but the scroll wheel on the editor's keyboard gives me so much of this functionality. And I might even prefer it over the playhead itself haha. But still, just add it, rather have the option than not. And I know this sounds insane, but give the range selection tools a try in the fairlight page. As long as you have the video tracks enabled and selected, ripple delete commands work too in the fairlight tab, and since you can have selector tools independent of the playhead (unlike the edit page) you can achieve a similar workflow for editing A-Roll around the waveform, no need to hover over the top section of the timeline at all.

You explained it very well, and I wish you didn't even try to convince and fight with some other "naah, I am good" type of imaginary people. What you suggest is 2+2=4. Factually beneficial.

Would be nice, perhaps a workaround is hit keyboard B which turns on blade skimming and cut at beginning of dead space, hit T and drag to end of dead space, so just alternating between two keys with the mouse essentially scanning the footage like in FCP

This is a great feature, not sure why its not In Resolve yet.

Really great video ,this feature is the one main reason i still stick with FCP X Also these *clip skimming (a big time saving feature) *Cmd+up and down arrow to select clip on a time line ., i wish Cmd+Shift +up and down arrow can select multiple clip but not possible in fcp X *is there any way in davici resolve if we can temporarily hide the auto select tract select area.?

This! And select ranges with I and O shortcuts. Instead of whatever unnecessary thing I and O does now in the edit page. I searched about this some years ago when I switched to DR and there was some speculation of patents on the secondary playhead. Don't know if this is true.

Totally agree with you! I moved to Davinci this year and this is the function that I still miss from Final Cut. The magnetic timeline not so much now after editing in Davinci in Cut Page. I m still using Final Cut when I need speed, I make the cuts the export the project and continue the work in Davinci.
