I shouldn't have to look for videos on transitions, they should be completely intuitive. Transitions should be the fist thing that the developers developed to be 100% intuitive. Davince is NOT the least bit intuitive in this regard.
Thank you for explaining why transitions wouldn't always fit between clips, that had me completely baffled when I ran into it! Even as a beginner I'm loving how much you can do in DaVinci, but at the same time there's so many options and so much to learn it can be overwhelming without videos like this to explain things.
You’re welcome! There’s so much that resolve can do it’s almost endless. The learning curvest deep but keep working at it and eventually you’ll figure out how everything works. I’m still learning to and I still feel like I barely know anything about this program. 😜

I've problem in "detail resolve" transition only! whenever go there and only hover it, the message 'You have reached a limitation' appears! any solution plz❓❓
Hey Jason, thanks for another great video. I got a transition tip for you. You don't have to drag n drop the transition; if you place the Timeline Selector between the two clips, go over to the transition, & double click it. The Transition will automatically drop between the clips. I'm glad I watched your video because I learned a lot. Thank you & have a great day.
I don't like it. It is so much work for something that program should do it just like some other programs do. Just think if you have a 100 clips to do. It's good what you saying but come on. Plus I try the way at 5:00 and did not work for me. I just give up. In "Powerdirector" is so easy. Overlapping I can right away give a Crossfade. I know this one has a lot of other stuff that other programs don't but I will stay with Powerdirector for now.
This is nice but you missed one topic that is how to import transition pack. If you cover with another video then it would be good. sometime we need to go to the folder for external transitions

I really love your style and how much effort you are investing in these videos. The showdown of all the things we can do with Davinci in your own videos is excellent! That's pretty important and I appreciate the extra mile you go and invest time to really implement these though they might not be necessary, one would argue, in a tutorial like this. Hi Jason how do i CLOSE a time line without closing the whole program? I have upgraded through FREE 18.6 , 18.6.1 and now I'm on 18.6.2 and there are few videos showing how to close a timeline but all are pre 18.6 and have a CLOSE option if you right click on the project in the home screen however it has never been on any of my downloads. There should be a close option under FILE in the menu its so frustrating.
You can go into timeline view options, turn on the item to open multiple timelines, add a tab for a timeline, it will be blank, then you can close the tab for your current timeline. That should work.
I am using iPhone pictures and mov videos, mov’s fill the screen but iPhone pictures are centered…I use the blanking fill but unhappy with the looks. Is there a way to fill the screen with iPhone pictures?
Sure, you can either zoom in on the photo using the inspector or if you go into the project settings, then Image Scaling on the left, you can change the input scaling where it says Mismatched Resolution Files to another option like full frame with crop. You can also change the same thing in Output scaling if you need to.

So if I have two clips that you just don't have any spare frames. What do you do? I solved it by making a short clip using my camera. I left the lens cap on and turned down my audio all the way. Shot about a second (or any time you want). I now just insert that clip between my clips that have no spare frames. I just becomes a short black "transition".

I think I came to the right spot - I'm trying out DaVinci Resolve 18, and it had me so frustrated, since I'm used to simply add transitions without that ominous mandatory clips overlapping! Do you know why I'm able to place transitions but not view them? I'm not sure if its just a me problem, also overlaping the clips by clicking and dragging won't show the exactly white box while your triming it, hope this gets resolved if its a glitch.
Maybe they are disabled? If you are in the edit tab, along the top of the viewer, there's a colored circle, this will toggle on/off thinks like the color grade and FX. Maybe that's turned off....🤔

How to add the same transition across multiple clips (say 60 of them). Need to do this on the cut page. Cut page will add the transition to the video and the audio track. Or is there a way apply transitions to audio track as well on the edit page?
Ctrl (cmd on Mac) + T = transition on both Alt (option) + T = transition on video only Shift + T = transition on audio only. Select as many clips as you want, and use the appropriate keyboard shortcut above to apply a transition to all those clips. The transition that is applied is the one you have set as the default transition.
Hi Jason As a beginner I find Da Vinci very problematic. Your video shows its easy to to add a transition. But when I try it and then play back nothing happens just two clips with no transition
Sounds like it might just be a playback issue if you can see the transition on there. If you don't see the transition, just shorten the clips a bit and try adding the transition again.

I don't know if you can help me with my issue as it is a bit odd. When I try to use transitons on certain clips, instead of starting where I have cut the clip it starts on the frame before it that I have cut out, the frame before it appears on the timeline preview bar but it is not actually in the video itself and even if I cut out that frame it still doesn't seem to help, sorry if this makes no sense but was wondering if you know what the problem is
Sounds like it's because the transition will use a frame or few frames on either side of the cut, depending on the transition you've selected. I've noticed that happen before as well, depending on the transition.
Everytime I add a transition on the timeline, and the marker gets to it, my video lags and resumes couple seconds after the transiton was suppposed to play. Any tips on how to solve this?

TBH Davinci is very frustration with the whole transition dropping on the timeline not sure what's going on but I have clips that I didn't trim and it still wont let me drop the transition I end up having to move one clip or the other but then I run into the issue where it's only on one side or the other.

I was just wondering if there is a way to adjust the audio level on a video by adding points like you do in power director 365 and just raise or lower sections of the audio and not all the audio at the same time from a video clip? Yes, you can add keyframes to the audio. You can add them using the inspector volume or you can ctrl (might be alt) click on the gain line on the clip where you want to add a keyframe.

I’m on an M1 Mac Mini with 16gigs of ram. If you have the free version, it will not run a smooth as the studio version because it doesn’t use your graphics card.
OMG! I can't thank you enough, finally a video explaining in clear detail how to fix the "I cant stick the transition to the middle of the clips" problem! I have been having this issue for, well long enough, and for the life of me I didn't understand why. last year I found a video that sped through the how to but he was not clear at all so I just gave up, sometime times I would get it by mistake! after fiddling with it. and here you go showing us how to do it and I had no idea the answer would be in here! Hi :) I just started using free version of DaVinci Resolve and I cut my video to short clips, 'cause I wanted the whole video to last 60 seconds, and I have this problem of I don't know... 'jumping' zoom? I thought it's the transition thing, but you never had that in your video and I didn't find any useful info or solution to it. Every time 1 clip ends the view is zooming out till the new clip starts. I want it to be normal - without any transitions. Just one clip after the other. I have no idea what is wrong with it. Please help. And I'm sorry for my English ;)
Sounds like you may have turned on Dynamic Zoom by accident. Select a clip with the problem, open the inspector and see if 'dynamic zoom' is turned on. If it is, turn it off.

Thanks for this straight forward tutorial firstly! Second, it seems like your audio is not poppy or anything. What is the trick to capturing the audio like this while also being loud and clear? I find that I add to much pre-gain sometimes and it clips a lot. My bigger challenge is that I am only creating content from my livestreams so in essence the volumes have to be clear at the live stream not just in post. I am using an SM-58 through focus rite to OBS
Hi! Sounds like you’ve got a great microphone there, the keys to getting good clear audio art to make sure that you’ve got good audio levels, aim for -18 DB to -15 db when recording, this will give you enough headroom to play with once you get into Davinci resolve. You also want to try and make sure your environment that you’re recording in is the best possible, with no echo, or reverberations of possible. If your live streaming, you need everything set up as you’re doing it, but if you’re taking the live stream recording and then editing it for other videos, you can always work with your audio and make it sound better using some EQ, some compression, noise reduction, if you need it.

Overlap transition stopped me from putting a sawed-off elephant shotgun into the roof of my mouth and (gently) squeezing the trigger. You are a gentleman.

HI, can you help me? I am not very experienced with DaVinci resolve. But I seemed to have lost the text + animation button in the inspector. I just did a small 30-second video. In one section I use a video collage on a solid black background where I get 6 Jpegs to appear and the text + to fade in coming from the right to the center of each picture. then all fades into the next clip. I noticed that the one of text box animations hadn’t worked I went to the inspector to add the animation and I now can not find the button. Everything was done on the edit page. I am not sure what I have done.
When you say animation, buttons, do you mean the key frame buttons that look like a little diamond? Just make sure your clip is selected and you should see them in the inspector.
Hi Jason, Thanks for getting back to me, I never touched a key frame. I just added a 6 text + boxes above my 6 stills. using video collage. Clicked on each text box in turn. I went to the inspector. added the text. there a few buttons below with different functions. one was I got the choice the test to go, in. or out. or in and out. then a button that said animation. which I Clicked That gave me options to bring the text in from the left, right, or fly in. I didn't use fusion. everything was done in the edit page. now I can not for the life of me find these button. @@JasonYadlovski Help

"Hard enough as it is" an understatement. I've been an editor for decades, was on AVID for almost a decade, changing interface, licensing issues etc. I jumped to DaVinci. Sure Glad I did. Editing is NOT my problem, but finding everything under the hood-and the magic that awaits! You my friend are a blessing to all of us, newbie or not. Thank you for letting us look behind the curtain! I have tried every suggestion presented here to add transitions between clips. Nothing works. It is beyond frustrating. I import my videos into Microsoft Clip Champ and it works perfectly. WHY IS THIS SO DIFFICULT!
I’ve been making my on RU-vid videos on iMovie for a couple years now, but I’m hoping that I can bring the quality of my content to a new level using DaVinci resolve. My only concern is that since the iMovie app is so to use, that there will be a huge learning curve for me to learn to do the same quality videos with DaVinci resolve. Thanks for the video 🙏
You’re welcome! I did the same thing many years ago, went from iMovie to Davinci resolve. Learning curve was pretty steep, but once you get going to get the basics down, it’s not so bad. Now there’s a lot of great videos out there from a lotta awesome contact creators about da Vinci resolve. You should be able to get up to speed in no time. I got tons of videos with all the common problems you might run into when starting in Resolve, just search my channel for any issues you might have.
You can unlink the clips by either Turn it off the link icon in the toolbar above the timeline or selecting your clips, right click and choose link clips at the bottom of the list to link and unlink them. Then deselect both clips and you can select just the audio.
OMG Dude this has been killing me for about a year now. Had no idea why my transitions would work in some areas but not the other. I was working on my RU-vid videos, trying to make some shorts and I could not figure out how to make it look good without the transition. So your video was super helpful and honestly gave me even more helpful stuff than I could have asked for.
Don't know if you can help me with this, Jason. I'm trying to remove an audio track from a video of my friend's band, I want to save and send the audio only to another friend. I have Resolve 19 the free version. I unlink the video and audio tracks, delete the video and then open the section to render. I click on Audio, but in the top right, it says, "No Jobs In Queue." So I can't render as it's greyed out. Should be simple, but I'm probably missing something. Any advice would be gratefully received. 👍
You can only apply the same transition to all your clips at once. However you can change what the default transition is but you cannot apply different transitions to different clips at the same time. I hope that makes sense.

I ran it through an AI and your speed is in the 98% tile of internet speeds are people talking on the internet. To tell you the truth I really loved your video unfortunately it's 75 yes New Jersey guys do talk a little faster than me I had to watch it points at .5 speed .But really your video really covered everything and like I'm telling seniors if you take everything slowly off of guys like you they will learn but they just have to slow down the speed a little. thanks for your comment
