Yes. I don’t use the studio features much as I’m not on such high level yet (except the magic mask which I abuse) and I pretty much bought it just to support them. What a great company providing people with a free version with such high value.

Transcript editing tip: use a codec that has a constant frame rate. If you record footage on a phone (for example) the transcription will often be off sync. Convert to DNxHR and then run the auto transcription, and it will stay in sync.

After using Resolve for 4 years, I finally upgraded and sooo thankful I did. For me, magic mask alone makes it worth it! I also love supporting companies that: 1. Are honest, clearly passionate and focused on what they do and 2. Offer products/services without anti-consumer tactics like subscription services, contracts, marketing tactics, etc. aaaand the Speed Editor is incredible too 👏🏻

I've had studio for several years at this point, buying in after using the free version for a couple of months, and I am so glad I upgraded. One thing I was really worried about was the licensing because you only have 2 uses and I've run into situations where that caused me trouble in the past. I found out last year after having a computer crash that they allow you to reset the licenses if you need to so you can reuse them, making this one of the best purchases I have made for my video production stuff. That being said, you mentioned a couple things in here that I've never even thought of using, like the auto captions, and I'm so happy to know about these now and how they work. I honestly never really thought about them outside of seeing them mentioned in release notes, so your video actually taught me something new about the software I've been using all this time. Thank you!
@Chalisque
@Chalisque 2 дня назад
Only 2 is unnecessarily stingy, and something that will make me think twice. Of interest, if you dual boot Windows and Linux, does that take 1 or 2 of your licenses? Frankly, 5 would make more sense (like e.g. Arturia), or perhaps recharging the 2 licenses after 6 months (like e.g. AAS).
@JoshBearheart
@JoshBearheart День назад
@@Chalisque that's a good question. I believe the license is tied to the hardware, but I haven't confirmed that.

I've only really been using Resolve for a few months and am still at the basic editing level, with some rudimentary colour grading. I really like it as I'm working through each feature whilst building my own channel. For a free package, Resolve is outstanding. I can see me upgrading as I get more in-depth, producing higher quality videos. Your delivery takes the pain out of learning a huge software package. As I delve deeper, I'll be delving through your previous videos even more. Cheers.

Hiya! I've been using the free version for over 9 months now and have been able to practice Content Editing--as well as take on real paid work! The Studio version is incredible, no doubt about it, especially coming from an AE/Pr workflow. But I've challenged myself to push the free version as far as I can, and frankly I've yet to be stumped. Funnily enough, I finally upgraded just this month LITERALLY JUST for Camera Shake and NVIDIA-based rendering since H.264 was giving me render artifacts. (both of which still never prevented me from doing real work!) So for most of us who want to learn video editing, and aren't necessarily ingesting RED footage all day long, the free version will take you further than you could ever imagine! 😊

The voice isolations was a project saving to one of my documentary films for a footage that I got from oversees with so much complications to repeat the shots. It was using 85mm lens and with scratch mic alone and managed to make it fairly acceptable after extensive editing and pushing isolation to 80% (best). Also you forgot about super scale (x2-4 resolution enhancement) which also an insane free update we got lately.

Tbh its quite good app. Only downside that is holding me back to fully switch from final cut pro to resolve is timeline scrobbling. U knoq u can hover ur mouse and u dont ever need to click to playhead to move on timeline. So for that reason, I'm currently editing my videos on fcp but if the video is long, i prefer to make an XML file then put it onto da vinci for export. For some reason i cant export videos longer than 15 hours on final cut pro woth .mov container. It exports as .mp4 tho but i need .mov so da vinci does that. But seeing auto captions and magic mask, it is insane to have em. No need for ae to rotoscope anymore. And that smart reframe. Idk how well its gonna work for my content but ima try it and see. Cos my shorts are waay to complex to edit. Cos sometimes theres 2 talking heads and i like to fit em at that moment where they talk etc in a single shot so definitely smart reframe cant do this. So im doin manually in fcp and im gettin better evry day but ima try it in resolve to see how its gonna work. Great video btw.

The one most important piece of advice I would give before buying the Studio version (which is very worth it) is, If you are looking at buying some hardware from Black Magic, wait and check because it might include a free Studio license. You could get a pocket camera, or a speed editor, and save some cash, since those come with the Studio license. If you aren't planning on getting anything from them, it's still well worth it to get Studio, any one of the features is probably a good enough justification.

I refuse to pay via the subscription model and have been using open source based software as a result for alot of the software I use. I think because Black Magic Design is primarily a video hardware company maybe the reason they can use the one time purchase model for Resolve.

What I heard from others is that blackmagic capped some computers and laptops to 8bit editing for the free version, but not really sure though. And from what I’ve heard is that the sure thing is that even if some laptops or computers can access 10bit files in the free version, it cannot export 10bit files. So to be sure, if you want to use 10bit files and export 10bit files, you need the studio version.

10 bit that opens are ProRes versions, some H.265 -it’s a trail and error, DnxHR HQx (actually 12-bit). I haven’t got any H264 10bit files to work in resolve.

You have a video on color grading where you said you were using the free version for just over a month... Where did this 3 days thing come from?

What would be the better ecosystem for desktop and iPad editing? I mainly use FCPX at home, but I really like Davinci's iPad app thats free.

I need to remove and replace backgrounds with Majic Mask but you need the paid version to do this? I do not need most of the paid version features only magic masking.

It took me 5 years before I finally sucked it up and upgrade to Studio. 3 of those years I had a computer that would've been able to handle the extra grading features, fusion effects, and benefit from hardware acceleration. It's been a year since the upgrade and I'm still seriously pissed at myself for not upgrading sooner.

What's amazing is that buying Studio is a fraction of the cost of buying your camera hardware. :-) And the reason there is a free version and the pad version is a one-time purchase is probably because BlackMagic Design make most of their money selling hardware!

I personally love using davinci resolve for the fact that i can use it on linux unlike filmora with windows or whatever apple uses. Davinci is available for all!
