I worked for a custom cutter in the summer of '66 as we worked the harvest northward. I was 15. Two of the cutter's sons, a couple of ex-cons who showed up at harvest time every year, and me. We drove the combines (Massey-Ferguson Super 92). No air conditioned cabs. It was hard, dirty, itchy work. I made $1 an hour. The cutter's wife and daughters would cook, set up the tables and feed us lunch every day. That was the high point of the day. Best dam food I ever ate. Drove us crazy as we circled the fields watching them set up for lunch. Ate in shifts since the combines never stopped until it was too dark to cut. Best summer ever.

There are many people that take Farmers for granted, not realizing how crucially important Farmers are and how crop failures can sometimes devastate small and large acreage Farmers. I deeply appreciate and never take for granted what Farmers like yourself are doing to keep food on my table. Thank You.

That is how I was raised. Driving a truck to the field at 12 years old. Running a tractor or Combine by 13 years old. It was hard work, but priceless at the same time.

Pete k yes sir that’s me I learned to drive an old 620 popping Johnny they John Deere tricycle front end in 1968 I was six years old and ten was driving pickups and bob trucks around the farm but them right there were the good ol days not the same anymore I’m from south central part of Ar place called Dewitt Ar and them farmers down there just big and fast real quick rat race kind and they want give a teenager a chance to even try it is so sad that they’re like that I’ve got two grandsons that have and still try their hearts out to get to work for them farmers within ten to fifteen miles but the farmers want even think about giving them a chance. But that’s an amazing family working together like they’re doing GodBless the good American farmers but there is some that has had it handed to them and then they’re invincible they don’t believe in the American way.But that’s a great family operation GodBless buddy

To: Texas Country Reporter & The Davis Family Farmers, (Thanks for your Sharing & Posting Your Video) I hope and pray your Children Stay on The Farm. But, should they not stay. I'm an old Cowboy, who loves Riding Horses. And wouldn't mind helping y'all. I Love and Miss "The Old & Simple Hard Life of Farming." To your young ones, I'd say, take it from someone who has lived on Farms, and went to work in The Cities of America. "You ain't Missing Nothing." And "Take your shoes Off, you All come back now, hear." I remember, when I worked at Sylvan Grove, Kansas, for The Meyer Family. When it was Wheat Harvest Time, we'd be out harvesting wheat for 15 to 17 hours Straight. I might be 60 years old but I miss Farming. Words of Wisdom: "Your not Sitting down, your not being LAZY, YOUR doing something...(doing Nothing=playing X-Box or Play Station) your doing Something... Build Character." Stupid Question by Reporter. "Is that Important?" Hell Yeah, that's Important. (That is what is wrong, with this Country, most Children are too dependent on their Government to take care of them. They want everything "Given to them" nobody wants to WORK FOR IT Anymore) "If you don't have Character, you can't get too far in Life." Smart Young man.

God bless our farmers ,they have to be vetrinarians, hortaculterests ,mechanics, engineers, carpinters, cooks, nutricinistes, operators of equipment, parents and God knows some kind of financial wizard to make it all work!!I once heard some smart ass refer to them as just dumb farmers Dumb my butt !Some of the smartesthard working people you'll ever meet.So when anyone makes fun of the farmers they get my dander up!

Thanks Davis Family! I LOVE farmers. We need to do more for OUR farmers in America. As a kid in Texas and later in Robins Illinois, I worked on a farm - well, played on a farm. It was fun, especially when I was a kid. I loved all of the animals and doing chores, most of the time. LOL. Of course, it's ALL WORK, sun p to sun down for farmers. Gold Bless them!

Thanks for an outstaanding video; a lot of memories came back as I watch this video. I was raised on a farm in the early 50's to the middle 50's; didn't have any of this fnacy equipment. I sat on a ford tractor many an hour and before the tractor I plowed many an acre with a team of mules. one thing for sure I didn't have to worry about being over weight. Love ever minute of it.

A PBS television station in New York State produced a family farm documentary about 30 years ago where they showcased the farm family at their best and at their worst -- with family working together to the family fragmenting and leaving farming. The saddest part was at the end where they interviewed all of the youngest generation of kids. Out of 13 or so farm kids, only ONE had plans to stay on the farm and be a farmer like their dad. The future of the USA depends on agriculture, no matter what anyone else thinks or says. Everyone eats food. And everything found in restaurants and the grocery store started on a farm somewhere around the world. And the backbone of farming around the world is dependent upon the family farm. Corporate or government farms simply cannot compare to the 24/7 dedication of a family farmer who is more dedicated than any employee drawing a paycheck or especially forced laborers. But where will we find the next generation of farmers? If the children of today's farmers are unwilling to stay on the farm and continue, utilizing land, assets, equipment, and know-how carefully managed by the previous generations, then there will be NOBODY to grow our food to feed ourselves and the rest of the world.

I learned more in one summer about the outdoors then any book could teach you. One year in Italy with their eyes open would be worth more than three at Oxford; and six months in the fields with a platyscopic lens would teach them strange things about the world around them that all the long terms at Harrow and Winchester have failed to discover to them. But that would involve some trouble to the teacher. What a misfortune it is that we should thus be compelled to let our boys’ schooling interfere with their education! Grant Allen
