Hank loves a challenge, and this time he's decided to race the sun. At dawn he'll head out on an ambitious ride, trying to cover as much distance as he can in just 7 hours and 49 minutes. In a ride that will take him to mountains, puddles and mechanicals, can he beat the sun?

Have you ever ridden from sunrise to sunset? 🌅
@StornofuerKasse3
@StornofuerKasse3 Год назад
That was my first big challenge, when i started riding bikes last year. winter solstice - 7:17 - 160k (never ridden so far before), Baltic Sea to North Sea and back. And just to spice things up on the first half a 35kph / 22 mph headwind and all planed coffee stops where closed that day. A ride i will never forget!😀

Yes. I’ve also ridden from sunset to sunrise on the summer solstice. Had to plan food breaks carefully and carry my own for after midnight when even the Golden Arches were closed.

i tried it in NYC today. went from the Lower East Side of Manhattan to the top of Bear Mountain (55 miles) and planned to take the long way back through Westchester, but the freezing descent and nearly constant leg cramps were killing me. I stopped for a bite and felt like I was going to pass out and throw up. I had to bail. Took the train home 2 hours before sunset. 65 miles. Probably didn't help that I did over 50 miles yesterday. Much respect to Hank!

Coming from Australia I have given this challenge a bit of thought. Other challenges to get ready for it would be how far you can go in 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours and 8 hours and if you can do it 10 or 12 hours. My big issue is I would strongly suggest taking lights and actually stopping somewhere for food, water and toilet stops. Given you could wind up in the middle of nowhere after dark, lights add to the safety. On the issue of the mechanical, I wouldn't bash myself up for the unfortunate punctures but I'm would highly recommend having the resources to fix them eg pump, patch kit, spare tube or whatever you use to fix punctures in tubeless tyres. If necessary make sure the bike is serviced and has new tyres. This challenge is something to think about on both the longest day of the year (the summer solstice and the shortest day of the year or the winter solstice). You could do it on the equinox when the day and night are equal.

Great callout to us in CHCH, NZ, Hank! Had to work so no epic ride that day, but I did get out with a bunch (about 15 of us) for a "mini-tour" to the south of the city late afternoon & into the evening. Some "rehydration" stops at some pubs on the way, 100+km for the night for most of us. Awesome evening! That type of ride could be a GCN video topic ;-)

What a super video and great idea gcn! Thanks Hank for taking us along on the type of race I can get behind! Love the personal best, challenge material content! When I saw the puddle I thought "Oh Jammer, what have you gone and done now?!" The only Dawn to dusk ride I have done to date is in Summer in Southern Ontario, bikepacking up the Hastings Heritage Rail Trail from Trenton to Bancroft. Thanks to beavers, there were many "Water Features " where I was pushing down braken, stepping on it and dragging the bike that was above the bottom bracket. Sand near Bancroft was treacherous. Thanks for the inspiration Hank! I am now going to try some Winter Solstice Cycling. Loved the running commentary on day length in other parts of the world! More of this excellent content please!

Come to Australia Hank. Every December roughly around the 22nd we have our longest day. About 14:40 hours this year. Let us see how long you can ride. You just have to ignore the 30 degree Centigrade plus temps. We'll shout you a beer or two if you like. I'm sure we could find a few blokes to suck a wheel.

when i saw this thumbnail i was like "WAIT A MINUTE" cause Hank has allready done that and it actually inspired me to do it myself. Back when you posted the first version of this video i just bought my first roadbike and was about to get serious in cycling. during that ride, even tho it was obviously dark, i encountered so many wild animals and both funny and creepy people. it still is to this day one of my most memorable rides ever. i need to try this again too, lets see how far i come this time, with all the training and much better bike. i am definetly be wearing a lot more this time tho, i remember it got cold pretty dammn fast... Edit: wait a minute, he rides from sunrise to sunset... sorry guys, my english isnt that great and i confused dawn and dusk hehe, i am still doing another night ride again lol.

Haven't done this, but I like the concept! I may give it a whirl but less race, more adventure, and equinox! Get on bike at dawn with pockets full of snacks, ride to cool places, and see where I end up at sundown (if I am smart, it'll be next to a train station to get home after 12hrs). No racing - if I land at a tasty cafe or a cool view, enjoy it before moving on. New goal on my To-Do list! Thanks Hank :)

Absolutely love the challenge. I felt cold just watching! No gloves! No neck gator! No booties! Ugh - what an animal. I have raced the sun all day once, at Unbound 200 last year where I just missed joining the sunset club with a total time of 15:08:09. This year, should I get a spot, I hope to finish under 14hrs. With Christmas and work I wasn't able to get out on 12/21. Instead I am planning to attempt this on 1/1 here in Greensboro, NC, USA where I'll have 9:46 of daylight from 07:29 - 17:15 EST (-5UTC). I'm going to map out a 120mi route for a zone 2 base miles workout. The weather is (so far!) looking good with low of 45 and high of 62 with rain having stopped on Saturday night.

However, the ice and snow prevented that so I might just have to try the challenge that Hank and Conor did of riding from sunrise to sunset on the longest day of the year! Incidentally, if that was December 21 in Britain it is clear that climate change has made it tropical already--so much greenery!

I remember being inspired to do this before, and planed to do it this year, but didnt schedule it early enough. Here in Arizona its great weather, with just over 10 hours of light.

Rochester, Minnesota USA here. We have a tradition of doing a dawn to dusk ride, but typically in August when we have more daylight and more warmth. Typically do 207 miles with best time for me of 10hr 30min with a group of 19,

Out here in El Paso, Texas... I'd definitely do that. That is of course that I didn't have any other obligations or duties within that day. Must've been glorious

I was hoping for sequel of Hank's and Mark's race during the shortest day of the year. Please make this happen next year!

I am not convinced about this challenge (no cafe stops 😱) but I just love Hanks joy for riding. Living in Australia (Sydney) our shortest day is 10 hours and I don’t think I could keep going for that long - although I did run really long ultra marathons in my youth.

There's a 93 mile bike path near my house that is only open from sunrise to sunset. I'm stubborn, but I'm slow. Hoping to round-trip it in a day next summer. I may have to hit near the solstice though!
