This episode of the series "Voices Of Our Time: A Recital Series from the Théâtre du Châtelet" features American soprano Dawn Upshaw, accompanied by pianist Gilbert Kalish. Upshaw’s choice of repertoire for ths recital reflects her great love of contemporary music and harnesses her versatility, charm and ebullience. Songs by fellow Americans are a feature of her recital and William Bolcom, Ruth Crawford Seeger, John Harbison, George Crumb and Charles Ives are among the composers whose work is represented. She also sings songs by Messiaen as well as "Lonh" by Kaija Saariaho, a Finnish composer currently living in Paris. No accompanist required, Upshaw wears a microphone to amplify spoken passages and operates a foot pedal to introduce, from a computer, sound textures prepared by the composer. Saariaho herself introduces this piece. The live performance is intercut with informal backstage interviews in which the singer introduces her choice of music.
