I still can’t believe what a gift this bible study is!! Truly have never gotten so much joy reading God’s word. It has been coming alive in my heart. TLC’s recap has helped me so much. I truly misunderstood a great deal of the OT and also felt afraid that I would do something to anger God, not understanding that He is so approachable every minute. I am also so encouraged by all your words too. Thank you TLC and TBR family!! Have a great day!!

God is a God Who grieves (Judg 10:16), whether we caused our own misery or because tragedy strikes. I’ve found that when we draw near to Him, He uses His word and the wisdom of others (via books or wise counsel) to teach us what He wants us to know about our loss, and how He’ll restore us-the basis of our hope.

Very thankful for this video. Going through the OT entirely for the first time at the age of 54. Read this section in Judges and it rocked my world. Couldn’t understand what Jephthah did and how God “seemed” to be ok with it. Prayer and searched for an answer in a few different places, but didn’t find any. The way you laid out the passage in Leviticus and Deuteronomy(that I’ve read but didn’t remember the specifics) really showed me a greater understanding. Thank you for blessing me with the wisdom I needed to see through the lies to the truth that God IS light and no matter what obstacle I encounter there is NO darkness in Him.

Two thoughts from 10:6: it doesn't say God is surprised by Israel's evil ways and the author still uses God's loyal, loving, covenant keeping name. He doesn't cease to be who He is - ever.

Reference Judges 10: 6-8; 10; 15-16 I can just “SEE” these words written in my Bible: “The people of the United States did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and served other gods. So He handed them over to the Chinese and Russians.” And then I pray this happens: And the people of the United States cried out to the LORD “we have sinned against you because we have served other gods”. Please help us. So they put away their foreign gods and served The LORD. And The LORD was grieved by their misery”

Before you take this completely to heart, consider that way this part was interpreted seems to misconstrue the lesson learned. What happened to Japheth's daughter isn't prescriptive-God telling us how we ought to live-but descriptive, a retelling of what happened. None of these events are explicitly endorsed by God. Ultimately, it's a description of what happens when we lose sight of God and his Character and, like Japheth, replace it with our ideas about him and what he wants for us. As Tara-Leigh Cobble points out, there were so many mistakes Japheth made getting to this point that show us he really had no idea the true character of God. If he'd known God's word, he could have broken the vow with an animal sacrifice, or paid the redemption cost for his daughter. His actions show he treated God like one of the surrounding nations would have, not as the God of Israel. I wouldn't be too quick to take the events in this passage as a confirmation that you personally should be single or not. If you have the desire to find someone and get married, of course pray about it, but it would be a stretch to say that this passage says marriage isn't for everyone. Marriage is a God-created, God-ordained institution and I would argue, God-given desire that this passage doesn't condemn. Psalm 37:4 Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Focus on Him and his character and it will all come together. If you're interested in looking into the whole passage further, this is a really good breakdown of everything surrounding Japheth's vow: answersingenesis.org/bible-characters/jephthahs-vow/ I know this comment was a couple months ago, but if you've thought about this more, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

God again uses an unlikely person, Jephthah, who was shunned by his brothers from another mother. Judges 11:29 says, "the spirit of the Lord came upon" him. Every time I come upon this story, though, I cringe thinking about Jehthah sacrificing his daughter. I just want to scream, "No, you don't have to do it" and see the story turn out differently.

Judges 10-12 Today we continue to see six more bad judges. We see two judges, and then we see that the Israelites are falling into apostasy again. We see a long list of gods they are worshiping. God grows angry with them. He sells them into the hands of the Philistines and ammonites. They oppress them for 18 years. Israel finally repents again. God tells them to cry out to all the gods they have been worshiping. Their response indicates their repentance may have been genuine. They agree they don’t deserve saving. They recognize God is their only hope. They forsake their idols and worship Yahweh. We see the ammonites attack Israel. Israel does not ask God for guidance but ask each other. They appoint Jeptha, an outlaw and outcast. He knows israel’s history and recounts it back to the enemy that God gave them the disputed land. God’s spirit travels with Jeptha to do His will. Jeptha makes a terrible war time decision. He vows if God gives him victory he will sacrifice whatever comes out of his house when he returns home. He was probably thinking it would be an animal. He was entirely wrong. It was his daughter. Obedience was the way to victory, not hasty vows. When Jeptha comes home the first thing that comes out of his door is his only child, his daughter. At that point Jeptha could have canceled his vow and went and offered a sin offering instead. God never wanted him to kill his daughter. Human sacrifice is strictly forbidden. Because of this terrible decision, his name will also die out with him. He will have no grandchildren. We see Ephriam and Jeptha mens fighting again also. This is the first internal battle inside the tribes of Israel. A sign that things are going downhill. If you ever wonder if God likes seeing you suffer, consider verse 10:16- God grew impatient over the misery of Israel. Even in the midst of giving Israel tough love so they would turn from their sin God was aching for them. What a tender hearted God we have. God aches alongside us. He wants what is best for us even more than we do. He grieves when His kids are in misery. Psalm 34:18 God is near to the broken-hearted and those crushed in Spirit. How He loves us.

Just curious... Why do you think the judges of today's reading are bad? We dont get a lot of info on them (except Jephthah) to conclude that they were bad. And even Jephthah, i wouldn't say he was bad. He made a bad vow, yes but still, i'd say he was a fairly decent guy.

The text clearly says that Jephtaht vowed to offer what came out of his house as a burnt offering and that he kept his vow. 😰 why does it feel like there is always some mention of “no thats not what really happened” even though it seems plain as day. It feels like a way to appease people’s feelings. Why didn’t God stop his sacrifice like Isaac’s? I’m struggling with the old testament.

In judges 11, what exactly happened to daughter that was the one who came out of his house first. Sacrificed??? Oh thank you TLC. You answered my question. I knew child sacrifice was a sinful terrible act.
@tompomona
@tompomona 4 месяца назад
My Blue Letter Bible says either she was sacrificed or that it is more likely that Jephthah set his daughter aside for the tabernacle service according to the principle of Leviticus 27:2-4, where persons set apart to God in a vow were not required to be sacrificed (as animals were) but were “given” to the tabernacle in monetary value.
@marykayk1626
@marykayk1626 4 месяца назад
I also went to my ESV study Bible and it did say tabernacle duty. Also, that this vow should have been an animal sacrifice, sin offering, and it showed how this king was removed from the biblical teachings, how Israelites had fallen away.

Enjoying the recaps each day BUT when you end EVERY SINGLE VIDEO WITH "HE'S WHERE THE JOY IS" it's like finger nails on a chalkboard hearing an advertisement for one of your Bible studies EVERY DAY
@pga007
@pga007 4 месяца назад
Nothing to do with content, but PLEASE, stop increasing volume when you advertise about D group, etc. We leave the worship and thoughtfulness of "He' where the joy is" into a shock of loudness that is distracting and meant to "sell" advanced services. TV has been doing this for decades, and legislation was even passed to stop it at one time. The most important content is what comes before. Let's keep that in perspective.

You have a volume button turn it down. I have no problem with it getting louder with the D group message.
@pga007
@pga007 4 месяца назад
@@LittleWillow1 There is no need to change volume, especially when the spiritual content is the point of the video. This is a marketing ploy, possibly done by you tube and not Recap, but Recap should be able to control it. Advertisers do this to make you pay attention to COMMERCIALS as opposed to content. The entire video should be the same volume, so you only adjust your volume at the beginning in order to hear the content, which has been too soft at times. Again, there has been legislation concerning this. The Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act (H.R. 1084/S. 2847) (CALM Act) requires the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to bar the audio of TV commercials from being broadcast louder than the TV program material they accompany by requiring all "multichannel video programming" distributors to implement the "Techniques for Establishing and Maintaining Audio Loudness for Digital Television" issued by the international industry group Advanced Television Systems Committee.[1][2] The final bill was passed on September 29, 2010.[3]
