I am so excited as I got my new allotment plot today. This video is a tour of the plot where I am going to grow my own organic vegetables, fruit and cut flowers and use the 'no dig method to do it. I also have an existing pond on the plot which needs some attention. I can't wait to get growing and take you all along for the journey.

The corner under the tree will likely be acidic. It might be a good spot for blueberries. I think the compost in the middle would be handy. Enjoy the new challenge!

You have made me think it's probably a good idea to check the pH of my soil, as I have no clue what the rest of the plot is. You're definitely right about the pH under the Xmas tress!

Lots of work ahead. Welcome back! Good time of year to get started. Alllll the possibilities. I am potting up artichokes while watching.

Thank you 😊. You're right it's a great time to get going. Artichokes are great and the bees love the ones that get to go to flower.

In Southampton, the February weather has arrived. Good job we had some good weather in January and the first week of February, I know how you feel about not being able to wait to start on the plot. Happy planting!

Tell me about it! Day 2 on the plot was rain and day 3 was snow!! I need a couple of dry days to get things moving. Hopefully the weather will improve a bit.

we started a year ago on our allotment here in Holland also no dig and had great succes , we also had raised beds and straw bales for growing in . lots of new things to try and more this year , i hope you enjoy it , will be following you . and i would have the compost bins at the back but that suits our garden . and the main thing is to have fun

Good to hear your no dig went well last year. I think I'm going to have to draw a plan of the plot so I can visualise what it will look like.

It is helpful that your new plot has been recently worked and I wish you all the luck in getting it up and going. I would treasure that lovely rhubarb and it seems a good idea to have your composters near the centre with easy access for wheebarrows.

It really is, I was lucky as it isn't that bad and hopefully won't take too long to get organised. It is a shame about the rhubarb but I'm the only one at home who eats it and so I will see if other plot holders want them and just keep 1 on the plot.

how exciting to start a new plot! your little one will be a great helper in a year or two! Having your compost bins and related work bench centred should save you lots of steps, plus, you can make use of the back and sides for growing some climbers and making it a feature! Definitely fence the pond for safety, but Instead of filing half of it in, consider putting a deck across part of it! The deck would make a great place to set up a little play-pen for your little one to nap in when tired. and/Or you could set up a gazebo o it next to the shed, for much needed shade on a hot day..... using the long pallets it would be very solid and you could secure the fence and the gazebo to the pallet 4X4s. . that is right on the end of your plot I think, So a natural place to create a privacy screen and resting area! What ever you decide, I am very sure you will enjoy your new garden!

Building a deck is an amazing idea I will see if I can work out how to do it. I think you're right about the compost bin being half way up.

Looking forward to seeing how your new plot 'grows' 🙂 Our local allotment has a waiting list of 18 months, so I'm going to be making the most of our small garden space for now (and watching other people on RU-vid). Good luck!
@AngelasKitchenGarden
@AngelasKitchenGarden Год назад
The wait is the worst bit. Hopefully it doesn't take too long for one to come up, at my allotment they said quite a few people are now dropping out of the waiting list.

Thank you 😊. It's nice when you start with quite a blank canvas as you can really make it your own.

Compost should be easier for you in the middle of the plot. Or, small ones at each end. I love the pond and yes that tree had to go.

It really does! I'm not looking forward to removing it though as it's going to have massive roots!

When I got a new plot, the far side from the access road was shady, so I put my compost bins there. It’s a long way to barrow stuff. I’m retired, so can take my time. If I was starting again I’d put the bins in the middle. I can’t do that because I have a poly tunnel there.😂
@AngelasKitchenGarden
@AngelasKitchenGarden Год назад
You have made me think that maybe I need to leave space for a polly tunnel as i would like one at some point. It's difficult deciding where to put things.

Move the compost pile from year to year, as the juice, etc that runs from it improves the soil there?
@AngelasKitchenGarden
@AngelasKitchenGarden Год назад
It definitely adds lots of nutrients to the soil.
@ericnyamu9981

damn . they left so many useful things on the plot. btw no need to cut that tree. you need something different to look at other than food stuff and wooden fences.
@AngelasKitchenGarden
@AngelasKitchenGarden Год назад
I think the tree will have to go unfortunately as its very lop sided with the centre cut out of it as we aren't allowed tall trees on the plot but I will be planting some dwarf fruit trees in its place.

Can you burn the brush and dried stubble on the plot?...not sure I'd want the pond....especially with a young one....
@AngelasKitchenGarden
@AngelasKitchenGarden Год назад
We can have bonfires till the end of April so I have a few weeks to sort things out and clear them. We also have a skip on site in May for rubbish which I'd really handy. I agree with you about the pond and I wouldn't have put one in.
