The Church has no other light than Christ's, and the Holy Spirit is the source of all its holiness. We believe that the Church is "holy," "catholic," "one," and "apostolic." Fr. Mike explains that Jesus has promised to guide the Church in the truth. Members of the Church are called and uniquely belong to the Lord. We also learn that the word 'church' has three inseparable meanings: the liturgical assembly, the local community, and the universal community of believers. The Church draws her life from the body of Christ and so becomes Christ's body. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 748-752.

I pray for all those that have left the Catholic Church because a priest or nun was mean to them; or Father wouldn’t let them have an ice sculpture on the altar for their wedding; or, more seriously, for those who were sexually abused by someone they should have been able to trust. I pray they may find forgiveness in their hearts and come home. I pray they don’t throw out the baby with the bath water. I pray too for all the good priests and religious members who live in so much fear of being wrongly accused of impropriety that it can make them seem unapproachable to their parishioners. Oh Lord have mercy on us all.

My first memory of questioning this was at 14. I was raised Presbyterian and in our hymnal (and service) we said the Apostles creed. ….”the Holy Catholic Church…..”. It was capitalized. A proper noun. I asked my mother and preacher to clarify that. They just said it was “universal “. I decided that if it was a proper noun, then it meant The Church. From that point on, it was 25 years before I officially converted after searching for the truth. I can’t profess to believe in something and say it daily and “not believe “ it. Thank God for The Church.

I thought this was strange as well, but I commend you for looking into it, whereas I just sort of dismissed it. But while I was in the process of RCIA years later, I had a Protestant brother tell me that the words of the Nicene Creed meant something different to them back then than they do to us today. That pretty much convinced me I was on the right course. Saying that the Nicene Creed is only the same in a literal sense, but not in a substantive sense… Absolutely incoherent.

I am a cradle Catholic. I am also a practicing Catholic. I went for my friend’s father’s funeral (Anglican church) and was shocked that they recited the same thing; “I believe in the Holy Catholic Church.” Weeks later, I asked my friend why would you say it if its not what you believed in. She just said; “I don’t know. Ask my pastor.” And that was that. So weird…

I was in a Protestant type of denomination church overseas. When you attend there they have headsets that translate what language is the primary there. Well anyhow the parishioner can change the dial to German, French, English, Spanish, Hangeul, and other languages. Well I attended there a number of times. I was left awestruck to hear them recite the Apostles Creed but they dropped the Holy Catholic Church and added something else. Since I have returned to the Roman Catholic Apsotlic Church I have discovered what the Protestant Reformation was and how it impacted Christian religion. What I am hearing is possible and many Christian denominations.

@@Love_Divine A lot of Protestant churches still recite the creed but have changed the Capital "C" to lower case "c"... in any event, when they recite it, they are usually thinking "c"... meaning universal. Whenever I see/hear it I think "You are really, in some small way, part of the Catholic Church and you don't even know it yet".

You're weak if you need signs to believe. You want signs Hurricanes to sweep your home vehicles and belongings away and your only son to be killed unarmed by police six months apart yet clinging to your Catholic Faith. That's my lot. I challenge you to stand in my shoes. A faith that goes unchallenged is but a small faith. Perhaps Fr. Mike can talk about the meaning of the part in the Apostles Creed that states, ... believe in ...the holy catholic Church." My understanding is that "catholic" with a lower-case "c" means "all-embracing", "comprehensive", "universal". There might be some confusion about that sentence in the Creed when we read in the CCC that "we don't believe IN the Catholic Church."

Day 105 *The church is the place where the Spirit flourishes* Now this might not be our experience due to the brokeness of the church. We recognise that while, yes the Holy Spirit is the soul of the church and yes, while Jesus has promised to guide the church into all truth.... We also recognise that as human beings, we are broken. There is going to be darkness and evil We see this right from the beginning in the Bible where ppl did things in the name of God, what was not endorsed by God.....

Hey Father Mike and everyone else reading, I got a question; If I am catholic and my girlfriend is not can we still get married by the Catholic Church or what would she need to do? She wasn’t raised in a church setting but for almost 2yrs now she’s been coming to church with me almost every Sunday , I want to propose but wondering how that part would play out, if anyone answers thank you !

(From Catholic Answers:) To obtain permission to marry a non-Catholic baptized Christian, the following conditions must be fulfilled: (1) You declare that you are prepared to remove dangers of defecting from the faith; (2) you make a sincere promise to do all in your power so that all offspring are baptized and brought up in the Catholic Church; (3) the other party is to be informed at an appropriate time about the promises which you are to make, in such a way that it is certain that he or she is truly aware of the promise and your obligation; and (4) both parties are to be instructed about the purposes and essential properties of marriage which neither of the contracting parties is to exclude.

My dad was raised Methodist but went to Mass with my mom regularly. She got the dispensation described above for them to be married in the Church. We all went to Mass together every week once my brother and I were born, and Dad went through RCIA the year we were confirmed. 😊 So he had to come to the decision in his own time, but it happened! I'll be praying for you and your girlfriend.

Day 105. The Church is like the moon in that all of its light is reflected from the sun, or in case of the Church, the light is from The Son of God, Jesus Christ. There are 4 marks of the Church - one, holy, catholic, and Apostolic. It is the Holy Spirit who endows the Church with holiness. The word “Church” comes from two Greek words Ekkllesia, meaning “to call out of” and Kiriake, meaning what belongs to the Lord. Sometimes the humanity (brokenness) of the Church has gotten in the way of the Divinity of the Church. The broken part of the Church does NOT come from God. We don’t believe IN the Church, (the bureaucratic fallen human part) rather we believe in the Trinitarian God. The Church has 3 levels - the liturgical assembly; the local community made up of dioceses and parishes; the whole universal community. We are the Church. All the levels of the Church are connected.

Are today's 'so-called' churches that endorse, condone, promote, celebrate or simply 'ignore' sin like homosexuality, adultery, murder (abortion), etc. still considered to be real churches? For example, the episcopal church endorses those things mentioned above. Is the episcopal church still considered to be a church or part of the body of Christ?

Day 123 will address the relation between the Catholic Church and other Christians not if full communion. CCC 838 "Those who believe in Christ and have been properly baptized are put in a certain, although imperfect communion, with the Catholic Church."

I agree, our former episcopal church opened communion to every one, baptized or not, repentant or not, where the deacon was a woman in an unholy same sex marriage administered the communion, and there seemed to be no awareness of; 1 Corinthians 11:27 "Whoever, therefore, in an unworthy manner, eats the bread or drinks from the cup of the Lord sins against the body and blood of the Lord" Being new to the Catholic Church, we find great joy and truth in the Church and the Eucharist. However, we know for certain that some receive the Eucharist in an unworthy manner and the Priest can't identify them all, but that is on them.

@@johns1834 You really made such a great move, John... Blessings to you. As far as our own Church, this matter used to really upset me so much (including some of my own family members) but a good priest basically said that it is just good that they are here, and that Jesus can take care of himself, it was not my job to police them. (But we did explain several times about partaking in an unworthy manner, but were ignored or ridiculed, so not much more can be done, the rest is up to God.) May God have mercy on us all! If God/Holy Spirit can change *me* the way he did, then I do believe he can reach *anybody*.

Today I learned my German sucks. I got an email and a follow up call from a German guy and all I was trying to do was, real quick, verbally confirm I had the right transmission so I picked what looked like a person's name, miz fruendenficken. A 30 sec call turned in a 10 min session of me saying miz fruendenficken with a hundred different intonations and emphases, smh, it was ridiculous. "Our belief is in God, not the Church". Since I'm into repeating today, I figure this is a good one to repeat, in particular. And, just pointing out...from this we see...there is no "pop-goes-the daisy" (as you stated in different terms in a different video).

You're mistaken. He laughed at his mistake, because he was so used to saying "The version of the Bible I am using ...." when he did his "Bible in a Year" podcast, which became the most popular podcast that year.
