Day 13: Grants, NM to Albuquerque, NM

Today we rode to Albuquerque! The route was predominantly downhill, but with SOME climbing. I would say though that the challenge for today’s ride, at least for me, was a mental one - the weather. I hate the rain, especially riding in it. I also don’t like being uncomfortable. Today featured both, in the form of a frigid downpour before the first SAG! Anyway, I made it through, and the weather for tomorrow’s ride looks MUCH better.

Agreed. Sometimes it's more a matter of the wind/rain combination. When it's warm, calm and raining it's not bad. Speaking from Seattle here. ;)

If you are riding to Santa Fe from Albuquerque by way of highway 14 through Tijeras canyon and Madrid, the hill into Madrid will be a bit of a challenge but it's the safest and prettiest path. That long downhill into Albuquerque, is called 9 mile hill.

That was a fun ride, with the exception of where I was going REALLY fast when a traffic light ahead of me turned red. I was able to stop. Barely. (Referring to the descent down 9 mile hill.)

Sounds like a challenging ride both weather and tire wise. After multiple punctures, at what point do you need to consider a new tire? Do the tour organizers have tire replacements for in-ride replacements?

I’m not really sure exactly what the criteria is for having to replace a tire, but these punctures so far have been from little wires making tiny pin-pricks through the tires, so at least so far my tires are still serviceable. The tour organizers DO have a supply of tires for replacement should we need them though - prior to the tour they asked all of us to let them know what size tires we are all using so they can be properly prepared.
