I said I wouldn't upload for a while... but it was day 150, how could I not? 150 is such a good number. :D It isn't one of my better tries at playing a song, however I haven't uploaded a try of this song yet so I thought it was about time, I actually haven't practiced this one a lot compared to some others I have uploaded.
I also actually really like playing stood up, I get to sway around, even though I'm not really dancing I feel like I'm dancing along and it's a lot more fun than sitting! It does hurt my feet after a while though, lol. I started to get quite a bit of shoulder pain in my left arm, so I swapped the strap for the thicker, padded one which has helped so far, although I really still am not comfortable with the lower height of it, so I need one which is wider, padded and is a little more adjustable than this one.
Sorry if the editing is a little wonky or audio weird, I've had to start using a different video editing software (DaVinci Resolve if you're interested) as the other one I used (Hitfilm Express) has now decided they want money after I used it for so long, disappointing but oh well... I think DaVinci is probably the way better option anyway!
I do not own any rights to the music in this video.

great cover ! that sigh of relief at the end after getting a good take is so real lol. playing standing up is such a good way to get into the vibe and feel of a song, allowing myself to groove out and get immersed in the song is usually how i end up with my best takes :)

for real! and the relief that it's over because I was sweating so much from the heat, so tiring xD totally agree with ya, I'd full on boogie away if I could and not mess up a ton lmao

Been lurking along and keeping track of the progress you make and you're doing so good! The part where you noted where you had trouble seems pretty normal around 1:38 and is mainly getting comfortable with swapping strings, while alternating fingers, and keeping on time. Something i did as a self taught musician to help with string swapping while playing with two fingers was using a metronome! I'd keep it rolling and just pluck a constant rhythm on open E for an extended time, then swap to an open A on beat. Rinse and repeat, and then practice skipping from the open E to the open D, or open G string. Once you start getting comfy with that, feel free to experiment away from the open string and get schnazzy with string skipping onto fretted notes on different strings. It helps sync up your brain/fingers and will eventually become muscle memory to help in note transitions as you begin to get into more technical stuff! And i think someone else pointed out, work out that ring finger and pinky girl! It'll hurt, but pay off in the future! 😄 Something i did for finger training/exercises was a soft rule of "Each finger occupies 1 fret" at least for starting out. For instance if my index is already positioned at third fret, and the next note is at 5th, i'll use my ring finger to fret it. I say 'soft rule' because eventually you will begin to shift around the fretboards as you play different passages and thats perfectly okay. When i was learning this, i would just do open string, 1st fret, 2nd fret, 3rd fret, 4th fret, and then do it backwards, with each finger occupying one fret's worth of space. so 0-1-2-3-4 then 4-3-2-1-0 Other than that, keep up the good work and keep playing music you enjoy! You learn best when you're having fun, so take fun breaks between the 'boring' exercises to play other things!

That's actually a great tip about practicing that with the metronome, I hadn't thought about that before so will give it a whirl! and the 1 finger per fret exercise, I do that sometimes, but I should really make it a daily habit now even if it feels tedious, it's for the greater good :P Tysm for your very detailed advice, it really helps when people write thorough explanations and thanks for following along and encouraging me! :)

Dude, I was singing along the whole time. Your favorite part was my favorite part, too. That break down, mmmm. Nice work. Also, I've been playing for longer than you've prolly been alive, and all I can say is nice choice(if it even was a choice) of bass. Dont listen to haters. Ibanez is the shit. They're work horses, they'll never let you down sugar, and they can play, literally, any tune you require. Watch all your favorite bands live, especially in the olden days of their careers. You're gonna see a ton of Ibanez, even today. They rule. You rule. Keep rockin. Much love. Practice, and dont give up on your dream. I did, and now I regret it. If you want it, put everything you have into it and never look back. Nice work.

Aye, love me a spicy breakdown! Ahaha, guess you been playing 27+ years? :P I don't really listen to others opinions when it comes to choices like that, I heard a lot of people talk good about Ibanez basses and a select few shit on them. Imo, I think it's a great bass for what I paid for it. Tysm for your encouragement and kind words! :D

The enjoyment here shows, and you're really close with this one. Nothing practice won't fix.

I actually tone that down more when I record videos more to concentrate on the song/playing, but also to hide it a little 'cuz I can be a bit weird sometimes so I'm a bit self conscious of that, I'm quite conscious of the faces I make already, lol. xD But yeah, this song is super fun! Thanks so much :)

@@deartuation No problem. ...And I can't see the faces, I'm ttotally blind. The enjoyment came through in the playing itself.

@@NickG6489 Oh I see, I remember now from you commenting last time, I just forgot your username haha, my bad! That's really interesting you've said that though, I never noticed how the enjoyment can make it sound a bit different, but I suppose that's because I'm used to hearing myself play a lot and so I don't pick up on the smaller things like that?

@@deartuation I don't remember telling you, but I guess I did. LOL. As for enjoyment, I feel like it comes through in things you don't really measure, but in this case, you were really having fun witht he right hand and the rhythm in general. ...Either that or you're just plain getting better. THe nice thing about stringed and percussion instruments is that they're very direct as far as sound is concerned, even given pickups...You can hear someone's style, enjoyment, other intangibles. ...Well, that's until distortion comes in.

@@NickG6489 Haha yeah you did tell me, but it was almost 2 weeks ago, so you've slept since then lol! That's very true, I love the percussive sound of ghost notes in particular, they get me everytime. There's a bassist on here who uses a really interesting slap technique, I can't remember what it's called now and it isn't very commonly used I don't think, but it looks SO fun and it adds extra spice and sass to the tone, it's really cool to watch the way attacking the string like that creates such a clangy(?) tone. I suppose you have a much better ear than me though :D

Hey! I'm back again with some friendly advice! You're making great progress and your rhythm seems to be getting better. I have two suggestions: 1. It seems that you're still squeezing on your fretting hand with your thumb. The thumb shouldn't be applying any pressure to the back of the neck when you fret. Your fingers should be pressing the strings, and the pressure should come from your shoulder. 2. You've got flying fingers. I notice you are only fretting with your index and middle fingers. Not only is this inefficient, it'll cause pain and injury if you continue. There are certain reasons to use each finger and I won't get into when and how to decide on that, but what you should be doing is using the finger closest to whichever fret you're aiming for as opposed to sliding your hand back and forth so much. Unnecessary movement is going to tire you out and ruin your sound. When you move from the 5th fret to the 9th fret, try using your index finger on the 5 and your pinky on the 9. At first it's going to be difficult, but it'll pay off. Cant wait to see whats next from you! YOu're killing it! :D
@deartuation
@deartuation Месяц назад
Hello again! Believe me, I know I'm squeezing with that damn thumb and idk how to stop, it seems when I'm on the lower frets I really dig into it with my thumb because I feel like if I don't compensate with the thumb I won't fret the note properly and it'll come out buzzy and icky. I had massive issues with that before on the other bass too, it seems I'm squeezing less hard though as it doesn't hurt the thumb as it did before, although on some songs it can start to hurt. What do you mean from the shoulder exactly? ;-; I try to use only the finger strength sometimes by practicing with the thumb completely floating off the back of the neck and just trying to fret the notes that way. The flying fingers, yeah for sure, especially the pinky, she likes to fly high. I have started incorporating the ring finger sometimes, I know I need to use them more to build up the strength and get my hand used to using them, right now it just feels super alien, especially with the pinky sometimes. I really try when I can, but I have super short fingers, so sometimes using the pinky to fret certain notes to me is overstretching my hand or stretching it to a point that I can't even reach, unless I can microshift. I believe in practice those 2 fingers will gradually become incorporated, just as I wasn't comfortable with alternate plucking, it eventually has come even if it isn't the best :P and wait what, 5th to 9th fret using the pinky.... people can stretch their fingers that far? wtf? LMAO, my pinky doesnt even go that far when my index is on the 5th fret, barely even to the 8th fret. Edit: well I guess I could use index on 5th and do a microshift to 9th and fret the 9th with the pinky still :P And tysm as always :)

@jeyda look up “Adam Neely” left hand technique. Hit me up if you still have questions. Yes, at first you will get that buzz, but eventually your hand will get stronger without compensating by squeezing your thumb. Always practice good and proper technique even if it doesn’t sound good. Keep practicing until it does, don’t cut corners or you’ll regret it down the line. Baby steps

@mokii931 Месяц назад
And yes, microshift, don’t try to stretch your hand past its limits. Nothing wrong with microshifting. I meant shift your hand and then use your pinky

@@mokii931 tyvm! I have actually watched Adam Neely's video on left hand positioning a while back. I also saw some other videos and posts which said we typically use the pads of the fingers when we fret and it's nice to try and keep the fingers flattish against the strings, and then Adam Neely says to use the fingertips to fret, so this is where I just get confused, there's a lot of opposing information online xD But, I will try Adam's technique though, it does seem better that way tbh.
