Day 3 Bikepacking the South Downs and the Surrey Hills

Having checked the weather overnight, the forecast for the next day looked horrendous. With heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast from 10am. With a 151km plan for the day, I looked to see how I could change the route, shorten it and leave earlier to avoid as much rain as possible. As what do you do, if you get all your kit wet before you camp? So I cut off a 30km loop and pushed it into the next day, and set off early with an empty stomach looking for breakfast. Only Bignor Hill, wasn’t the type of breakfast I was looking for. How wet will it get was the question I kept asking myself?!

Love it that you wore your coat and it didn't rain!!! I should have took my own advice today as I took my coat, didn't wear my coat and I got absolutely soaked!!! 😂😂😂

Thanks Kev, all I could think of was you saying it won’t rain if you have your coat. So once I’d worn it, and it didn’t rain. I just couldn’t take it off. Although perhaps I should have slept in it, as it got pretty wild that night!! 🌧️ ⛈️ 🌩️

Great efforts on those climbs 👍🏼 Day 3+ gets tough pulling yourself away from your sleep sack. Even tougher when coffee is Not waiting for you.

Thanks Wayne, I can’t explain how hard it was trying to ride a fully laden bike up those steep climbs. At times it felt like the brakes were stuck on. In hindsight, it wasn’t my best idea!! 😂 The lack of coffee was self inflicted, as I had a stove and stuff to make myself a drink each morning and evening in camp. But I didn’t feel like coffee. It was an odd thing what I was craving and eating. As some things I love to eat, I struggled with. I ended up drinking cold drinks more and eating more savoury stuff. I hardly ate any cake over the whole week!!!

It was a beautiful area to ride a bike in Michelle, the bike with all my kit on, I reckon was about 25kg, so it didn’t help!! 😂 Did I mention I was a little insane??

@@DarrenPhillips thats a lot extra to carry up the hills, eek i think you last comment is correct 🤭 If you ever cycle past my area I think I’d have to hide, ain’t no way I’m crazy enough to do so many hills, although I used to be, Im regretting binge watching tonight now as I have to wait for the rest 😂

Lying by a pool reading a book seems like torture to me. Holidays seem to turn out to be a mixture of walking and eating. Good news with the thunderstorms though.

Thanks Steve, I think it’s about 25kg fully laden. But it’s such a great thing to do. Just riding your bike point to point with everything you need. Stop, and then go again! I just wouldn’t recommend adding a ridiculous amount of climbs to the route though!! 😂🤪

I rode to the local pub, that the campsite recommended. So managed to find some fries and a Goat Cheese Burger. Which, I like Goats cheese, but I don’t think I’ve ever eaten THAT much Goats cheese. Which I struggled to eat, obviously! 😂

I was actually craving a pint of Orange juice and lemonade, so sank a few pints of it. I try to avoid beer when doing anything like this as it adds to the dehydration. I saved the beer until I got home, it was very satisfying!! Thanks Lewis. Plus, if you think those hills were bad, they definitely get more frequent and worse!! 🤪

Thank you! I got quicker as the week went on. I think it took me an hour on this day. But I was dawdling and taking my time. I think I’d got it down to 30 mins by the end of the week, once I had a routine and knew what worked best in each bag.
