Hello, everyone! Welcome to Day 3 of our 30-Day Mindset Challenge. Today, we're going to engage in a guided mental rehearsal inspired by Heidi Halvorson's book, "Succeed: How We Can Reach Our Goals."
Let me start with a story. I can recall an interesting day when I was solo hiking up Table Mountain. The goal? To get to the top as quickly as possible. The result? I blazed it, yet focused so much on arriving at the summit that I rarely stopped to appreciate the ascending views. When I got to the top, I scanned the views for a wee bit and then took a nap! (True story!)
Have you ever found yourself so fixated on achieving a specific goal that you forget to appreciate the journey of self-improvement and personal growth along the way?
As Heidi Halvorson writes in her book, "Goals are not about the final product; they are about the process of reaching that product."
So how do we do that? Heidi has several useful techniques:
*Step 1: Focus on the Process*
Heidi says, "The more you can focus on the process and the work itself, the better off you'll be. Instead of fixating on the outcome, focus on the effort and the steps you need to take to get there." (p. 87).
Reflect: How often do I find myself fixating on the end result rather than the process of achieving my goals?
*Step 2: Focus on the Effort*
“When you focus on the effort, you're more likely to stay engaged and committed to the task, even when it gets difficult.” (p. 88).
Reflect: Do I find myself becoming disengaged when tasks become difficult or tedious?
*Step 3: Focus on the Steps*
“By focusing on the process and the steps you need to take to get there, you can experience a sense of control and competence, which in turn leads to increased motivation and satisfaction.” (p. 88).
Reflect: How can focusing on the steps I need to take to achieve my goals increase my sense of control and competence?
Now, let's practice a guided mental rehearsal focusing on these techniques:
*Relaxation:*
Find a comfortable position, either sitting or lying down. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose, filling your lungs completely. Hold for a moment, and then exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat this breathing exercise a few times until you feel relaxed and centered.
*Visualizing the Process:*
Visualize a goal you are currently working towards. See yourself engaging in the process, focusing on each step you need to take. Imagine the effort you are putting in and feel the sense of control and competence it brings.
*Applying the Techniques:*
Ask yourself, which of these techniques can I do more of today?
- Focus on the process?
- Focus on the effort?
- Focus on the steps?
*Affirmation:*
Repeat the following affirmation silently or out loud: "I am focused on the process, effort, and steps needed to achieve my goals. I appreciate the journey and embrace the growth it brings."
*Setting Positive Intentions:*
Set a positive intention for your day. Commit to applying these techniques to a goal-related activity of your choice. Visualize yourself staying engaged, motivated, and satisfied with the progress you make.
Take another deep breath in through your nose, hold it, and then exhale slowly through your mouth. Open your eyes, and bring this positive energy with you as you start your day.
Remember, each day is an opportunity to reframe your thoughts and set a positive tone. Practice this guided mental rehearsal daily to cultivate a mindset that supports your personal growth and happiness.
