About Julius Nyerere Leadership Centre (JNLC)
To ensure inclusive and equitable education and lifelong learning, Makerere University together with the Uganda Management Institute established the Julius Nyerere Leadership Centre (JNLC) which currently offers intergenerational dialogue on African history, the study of Africa’s revolutionary movements, and as a centre for knowledge and research. By contextualizing problems and their solutions, the JNLC delivers its programmes using a wide variety of approaches, that include, innovative policy leading research, quality dialogues, youth leadership training and mentoring, providing an important platform for distinguished African intellectuals, scholars, other accomplished Africans to share, nurture, mentor, challenge and account to the next generation of African leaders.
The overall objective is to establish a flexible, appropriate and integrated learning and leadership training environment for young people. The specific objective is to;
To nurture and mentor young people for transformative leadership, governance and sustainable social, economic and political development.
Rationale
For Youth Leadership Training - the fast changing economic, political and social climate in Uganda presents new challenges for leaders with more serious effect on youth and thus requires continuous leadership skilling. Youth must possess leadership skills coupled with a great mindset that allow them to connect with a wide-range of demographic-related challenges within their youthful life and in the wider communities while remaining dedicated to their primary mission of serving the public and themselves. The success of a community, organization, team and individual is dependent upon the effectiveness of its leaders. Limited leadership is premised on the fact that one is able to lead oneself before they can lead others effectively. Therefore, the rationale for focusing on the youth is to equip current and prospective young leaders with transformative leadership skills to enable them maximize their potential and improve their performance to effectively influence development policies and programmes.
