You had better hold off on that "period". Fish and bats eat things other then mosquitos. It would probably be pretty had for a bat to survive on mosquitos alone. One moth would be worth a hundred mosquitos for a bat.
If I could change one thing about my PCT through hike in 2015, I would have given myself more time to take zero days. I didn’t realize how hard I was on my body until after the first 1000 miles. I paid for it with foot problems that lasted a few years. Our bodies need more rest than we think.

Congrats on 1000 miles! - As I think I mentioned before, you're still in the Sierra Nevada until Chester at mile 1331.3. That's over 300 miles ahead of this point.
1000+ miles👏👏👏👏‼️ What a great day it was … 25 miles, you slave driver! So, pretty soon there will be another way to plan for the day’s hike. No early morning wake ups, different terrain, new views and always working toward the mileage mid point. You guys are doing great!
This is the best I can come up with for mosquitoes: In most mosquito species, the males feed on nectar and other plant juices (sometimes the females do too). In the process, as researchers are quick to point out, mosquitoes act as important pollinators for thousands of plant species, albeit rarely for the crops that we consume...
Was watching some non human biting mozzies yesterday busy pollinating. The biters however are horrendous. Sadly stopped hiking in North America due to bad reactions to bites - heartbreaking, so wild and so many flowers. Congrats on 1000 miles!
So one of my hiking buddies taught her students about No Trace. First graders yell at people who drop things the words “Erase the Trace”. So the that could be Privy Dan’s power call!

Miles....amazing. Do not know all the logistics but word of caution. Yes, set your own pace. However, be careful you do not loose other members of your hiker group due to your aggressive hiking miles.
Wahoo 1000 🎉 miles on the PCT!!! Congrats!!! About the Misquotes, one thing I used to do is wash my clothes with Downy, April Fresh scent, the fabric softener and wear those clothes camping. I never got bothered by misquotes. Everyone around me did, but they always left me alone. On one backpacking trip some of our group hiked back out to go to the nearest store to buy Downy, April Fresh Scent dryer sheets. They put the sheets all over their bodies, stuffed them in pockets and in their hats, anywhere they could. The misquotes quit bothering bothering them after that. Something to think about. Downy Dryer Sheets, at least the April Fresh Scent ones. I swear by them.!!! Loved the Alligator log, that looked cool and real! Thanks RR, keep the awesomeness going! It seems like after 11 weeks your enthusiasm for the trail is seriously flagging, bug complaints, superfluity of this pass or that pass, your marking of the miles, the keeping of time with miles, the measuring of distance, then you say, “smashing”, or “Luv this!” Holy cow girl, are you really committed to this project? Contrary, I love your reports and commentary, the description of your progress, the reporting of your trail games are all fun. The scenery is stellar, good luck to you, stay safe and be of good courage. Geologically the Sierras go from Tehachapi to Lassen! I think the thru-hiker's "Sierras" are just a shortened version of "High Sierras," above 10k feet.
I know bats eat them...bats good/skeeters bad. We joke that the first question we will ask God is, "Mosquitos? Why?" We also joke that His response will be, "Those aren't mine!" 😂 You & tramily are crushing it! 🥾🥾🥾
You are at the end of the Southern Sierra Nevada mountains. The Sierra range is 400 miles and ends just prior to Lassen Volcanic park. There it turns into the cascade range.
Just say no to scratching. It CAN be done and the itch will subside in an hour +/-. Scratching only makes things worse. So glad I learned this lesson in my teens on a week long Snake River trip. Two nights we camped on previously flooded riverbanks, swarming with millions. Everyone got ruined with bites. Guides gave the no scratching advice. Those who didn’t scratch were mostly clear of bites in 1-2 hrs of heading downstream. Try telling small kids not to scratch tho….two of them made things a whole lot worse by scratching themselves raw, ugly sight requiring disinfecting and wound treatment. Bites madden me to scratch like anyone else, but making it worse never made sense.
Mosquitoes kill more people each year than any other animal. They make politicians seem not so bad. A girl German girl hiking the PCT several years ago, wore a complete bug proof suit. She was with Second Chance. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick
1,000🎉 The Sierra range ends and the Cascade range begins around Quincy and Belden, near Bucks Lake in California; just south of Lake Almanor, which is where the PCT midpoint is located near the north end of the lake and the town of Chester, California. This is the area of the Sierra that I've hiked the most, Chester to Sierra City.
Sierra Nevada ends at Sonora pass. You can clearly see the volcanic terrain of the Cascades starting after that, vs the glaciated mountains of the Sierras.
@@Yetithruhikes...the Sierra Nevada extends well beyond Sonora Pass. Lived in California most of my life and have camped, hiked, fished, and backpacked in the Sierra Nevada mountains for over 40 years. The highest elevations of the Sierra are behind them, but trust me, Lake Tahoe and areas north of there are still the Sierra until just south of Lassen, where it becomes the Cascades. All very beautiful country!
@@karencaskey6210 I respect your perspective and input, however living in an area does not makes one an expert to the area. There is a mixed transition area that ends in Lassen. That area is not the Sierra Nevada. I've lived and been there and hiked the PCT and know just as much I promise you. In any case, yes. It is a scenic and amazing area. For sure.
Mosquitoes are pollinators and a food source for many wildlife species. mosquitoes’ primary food source is flower nectar, not blood. Hope this helps you 😊

Sonora Pass refers to the road that crosses the sierra. You cross the road "Sonora Pass" right there, a bit higher than where Kennedy Meadows is. The actual pass is up the road from where you cross it. The same is true for Ebbets Pass ‐ although you cross the road very close to the actual pass - and Carson Pass after that. It also is the same for Tioga Pass through Tuolomne Meadows. All of them refer to a road that crosses a pass at some point, not necessarily where the trail crosses that road.
All that water from the snow melt is making for some prime mosquito breeding spots ☹️. The 100 Mile Wilderness gets really bad with mosquitoes in the late spring and early summer. I live in the south, rivers, lakes and bayous everywhere, and we don't have them swarming anywhere near like they do in snow melt country. It's crazy! Altras have gone downhill the past few years. No one seems to get more than 300 miles from a pair. TOPOs seem do better. Salomons all the way for me personally but I don't like zero drop so 🤷🏼♀️.
I don´t like Mosquitoes neither. But their larvae are important prey for other animals. For example, spiders, fish, amphibians, dragonflies and birds depend on the presence of mosquitoes. If mosquitoes were to disappear from the ecosystem, this would have serious consequences for a large number of other animals.
That’s a benefit to nature not society! :) They haven’t invented anything or found a cure for cancer..but yes they are part of the food chain. Get some repellent next town day, several of them. Once you guys exit the Sierras the weather is going to get hot.
Great answer. Though obvious once theater, I never thought of it that way. My much darker thought, Eva use I hate them, was that they were here to spread disease and cull herds including humans.
So I live in the town of Susansville California, we are very far north of Tahoe and we are in the Sierra mountains. So you will be in the Sierra mountains for a while. Starting to see more thru hikers here.
The definition of passes changes a bit in the Sierra starting with Tioga, Sonora, Ebbetts, Carson and Donner. These passes are for vehicles to pass over the Sierra and way back when, wagon trains, etc. I live near Sonora Pass and yes, mosquitoes are bad.

Interesting view of the footwear. Doesn't seem stout enough for hiking over chunky granite. If they make a durable shoe, the uppers shouldn't be mesh nylon. But then the ultra-light thru-hikers would not buy them because they'd be too heavy.

mosquitos and ticks are in the same category as far as i’m concerned. sometimes we can’t see the benefits of another’s existence… it’s a mortal flaw, but i’m sure there is a reason that we could care less about. i envy your imperviousness to the little demons, i would be a giant welt.
2nd comment You can’t walk thru all the very rough terrain in tissue paper shoes and not expect tears. Just way too many jagged things. I like altras for city, but never had a pair last more than 400 backcountry miles before I and the terrain shredded them.
@@grega8586 as discussed already. There is a transition between the Sierra Nevada range and the Cascades. It is quite clear in the rocks and soil up until almost Lassen. You're more than welcome to research it yourself. Or not. I had enough chats with geologists knowing the region to show me the evidence. I could be wrong of course. I'll keep investigating more when I can.
