I love songs too! For Pre-K through first kiddos it just really makes things stick. Here’s one I thought of quickly. I hope you’re having a great week in kindergarten. To the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star: First you hang your backpack up, next your laptop or lunchbox, then you get your pencil pouch and your water bottle out. Tiptoe to your seat and start working ‘til it’s time to stop.

It looks like you have a big book cart next to your easel. If so, the top should prop up so you can put big books on it to read. You can also put the books on your regular easel if the ledge is big enough. Big books are the best! I love your enthusiasm for kindergarten. I have been teaching K for a long time and your energy helps not only new teachers, but also older teachers like me who are wearing out and need a boost. Have a good year.

For the monthly lunch menu, you could place them in a dry erase sleeve that has magnetic tape on it instead of having to laminate and peel and move the magnetic tape each month!

When I taught K, I used coffee cans wrapped with paper and I added a number on the can. Students would see the total number of kids allowed. They would place old style clothes pins with their names on the can/center they chose. It was easy and quick to manage!

Love watching your videos Lauren. I find it so interesting that kids in the US have specials. Here in Ireland the teacher teaches all subjects at primary level (ages 5-12). So we all teach Irish, English, Maths, Geography, History, Science, Art, Music, Drama, Religion/Ethics, PE & SPHE (Social, Personal, Health Ed). And our days are 4.5 hours for Infants, which is the equivalent of K & 1st, and 5.5hours for the rest of the classes! Typically most schools would be approx between 9-3 or so. So different to America!

Hey there! Another great video. I need all the inspiration I can get lol. I haven’t started the year yet but I have been prepping my room and your set up videos have given me so many new ideas, so thank you for that. I heard you talking about popsicles, I use an app called Popsicle. It’s super cute and the kids love to hear the phone say their names when I choose a student. The only thing about it is that you have to type the kiddos name phonetically correct otherwise it puts the wrong emphasis on the wrong syllables. Hope you have a great new week and I can’t wait to see the next vlog!

You can ask a friend to help you hold the big book. The students absolutely love it. Also yes put in on the easel or on a chair.

Omg! I have been WAITING!! 😭😅 The big book struggle is real! We had them with our curriculum when I taught Kindergarten! We don’t have them in First and I do not miss it! Lol We had a display shelf to place them on as we read through them.

This was such a fun vlog to watch. It was great hearing about how your first days in kindergarten went and about the fine tuning you are doing to your classroom now. I am amazed that kindergartners have to order their school lunches via Teams. Sheesh. I work with adults who struggle with Teams. 🙃 Your new place looks great. Love your office and Flexispot desk. I always put the big book on the easel and use a pointer to point to words as I read. As the year progresses, you can also challenge some stronger readers to use the pointer as you read. It is a bit of a struggle at first. I personally prefer a normal-sized book shared under the visualiser pointing with a finger or pen. It's easier for all children to see from everywhere on the carpet, and better models actual reading. Have a fun year!

You and me are literally living the same teaching life 🫣 I feel like I have no time during the day (I don't!), it's a great school but having no time during the day prevents a lot from getting done 😩 I also have to get to school super early because of the drive. I've tried to play with the time but got too close to the required arrival time and the traffic was terrible so I'm going to stick with my early time and embrace the 45 before school starts as much as possible

Love your videos! I teach Kindergarten also. I am still in shock about how your students having to order lunch and how long your planning time is! We have an hour planning time, Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri and 45 minutes on Wednesday because we have early release on Wednesdays!

Even if you are using a digital calendar for your calendar math, I would encourage you to keep the "hard copy" calendar up in your room. My kinders constantly refer to this calendar during the day. It's a good visual for learning throughout the entire day.

Have you considered making a mimio slide/smart board slide to move names for the free play centers? When I taught kinder with a mimio, my students were able to make lunch choices using a slide on the board (after explicit modeling of how to correctly use the pen)

Love your room...but let me mention something that I've learned over the years (as a teacher who loves pink and pastel colors). Remember you have boys (and girls too) in your classroom who hate "girly" colors. I have had students say they didn't want to be in my room bc I had a "girl" room. They would literally cry. So over the years (20 to be exact), I've learned to try and keep my colors in the "not so girly" realm. It really does make a difference.

Did I miss a set up video, because I saw that you changed your teacher table over by the hooks? I use a pocket chart for my centers. I have each child’s name card and next to their name is a colored stick that matches the center. We move through the centers weekly.

How much prep time did you get at your last school?? 30 min a day is what I had (though it really was like 25). I also woke up so early because I worked 45 min away. Still NEVER had enough time to get stuff done. It’s what pushed me out. 25 years old and working my life away. I loved the kids and was so great at teaching but I was starting to resent my job because of the huge lack of work life balance and not being provided time to work.

That Piece of furniture next to your whiteboard is a big book holder. You pop up the top and you put the big book on there so that it doesn’t fall over when you’re reading it. And the big slats in the back are where you store your big books
