Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a RU-vid video every Tuesday & Friday plus an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT on Twitch.

I remember so well visiting my great uncle in Canada when I was a little boy. He had emigrated to Ontario in the 1950s. He bought a plot of land next to a lake some ways north of Ottawa (Lake Clear I think it's called) and built a house there - as any architect would, I suppose. It was the most magical experience of my young life and I simply never wanted to leave. Canada is a very special place. Anyhoo, thanks for this lovely insight into your typical day in the old country. You handle its limitations with extraordinary fortitude and enthusiasm!

Alanna just a tip, to save you working in darkness and needing the SAD lamp on all summer, you can get adhesive frosted vinyl film to cover the lower part of the window, it's easy to remove too and any residue is removed with alcohol. And then you can open the windows and get a breeze through. Job for the butler ;) EDIT : Oh, you know lol, what are the chances 🤣

Purching and not spilling water on a sofa arm is a skill. lm so clumbsy, I managed to topple a whole pint of beer, from my desk, onto and into my new dehumidifier. And had to pour it out in the bath. Whole place smelt like a a brewery every time I turned it on for ages 😕 lol.

Interesting video - your videos of places outside brings back memories. I was living in Sittingbourne and briefly Teynham until I moved to Barcelona several years ago (I am originally from Maidstone). I spent many a weekend walking to Teynham and getting the train back. I actually walked all the way to Canterbury once from Teynham!

It is interesting that a lot of your experience are the same as mine despite us coming here in different decades. When you started to talk about appreciating how lucky you are to be able to just pop out to Canterbury I definitely can relate. I imagine all the people I grew up with in Canada and how they would never be able to afford to do even a tiny fraction of what I have been able to do and see here. Travel to the UK and Europe is very expensive and few average Canadians would be able to afford the time or the £ to be able to come. That is why it is so good to have a channel like yours to give people a chance to see a bit of Kent. Keep up the good work 😁.

Thank you for having us with you for the day, Alanna! And thank you in particular for giving us another brief tour of Canterbury - ironically, not somewhere that I could just pop to, even though I'm in the UK rather than Canada, although I am due to be there for a week in August (2022) on a business trip. I must try out some of those places you explored if I have the free time... Perhaps I'll even spot you out and about on another lunch date with your friends?!

Or maybe you can combine your book reviews with some wine tasting to make yourself feel comfortable. If not you can always take us out and about when the weather's nicer and show us some of your favourite places in Kent. See you soon. Ps Hopefully I didnt sound too bossy. Yup, being anxious about using the phone to pay is sensible. Sometimes my fingerprint doesn't work. Which can be very embarrassing if you're at the head of the queue and everything has been scanned. It happens. So now I always have backup. Oh, and South Eastern have an app that works in conjunction with their key card, so you can buy tickets using the app, and load them onto the key card, thus skipping the business of picking up tickets at the station. Which can be useful if there's a queue at the ticket machine and you've not left enough time to get the train and queue for 5 minutes at the ticket machine.

@@AdventuresAndNaps why do Canadians sound like Americans ? lol their accents sound the same haha
@brentwoodbay
@brentwoodbay 2 года назад
@@michaelhawkins7389 When I first came to Canada, from Wales, I thought so too. Then after a couple of weeks I took my first trip from BC into Washington State. Right at the border I noticed a big difference, they all sounded like cowboys from a movie. Canadians had sounded more like American news readers! What amazed me though, is that my Canadian friends who were with me, couldn't notice the difference, "They sound just like us" ! On later trips though, down to California, I noticed that there the people sounded a bit more like Canadians. Between a Canadian and American if you can't tell the difference immediately, listen to the way they say words like 'ABOUT' . or HOUSE . Canadians say these similar to how a Scot would say them, but an American like a Cockney does! Contrary to what many Americans say, Canadians DO NOT say 'ABOOT'! Although people from Ontario and farther east do say it a bit like 'A BOAT' ! Where Alana is from though, a little to the west of Toronto, you get a VERY different accent when you cross the border. There you have the 'Great Lakes' twang where all the vowels have shifted, so that 'Locked' sounds like 'Lacked'!

I'd like to see you do a shower episode, as I used to live in the UK and the showers are pathetic, especially when the pressure goes down when the toilet is flushed, then it goes either super hot or ice-cold for a few seconds, then you have to work out what button is for what temp/power setting. I hate uk showers - its like the rain there, just a couple of drips in a cold damp environment.

I also love the convenience of getting around by train! I have friends living in Salisbury (a lovely place to visit) and it's great to know that, if I plan accordingly and am willing to get up at the crack of dawn, I can potentially have a full day with them and get back to the Midlands that evening. It can be pricey, but again, if you plan ahead you can mitigate the costs.

Hi Alana, I'm one of your regular video watchers. Love your content! Thanks for gracing us with wonderfully light-hearted videos. Makes life relatively easy in such grim times of the war, COVID etc. I was just curious however about your motivation to stay back in England for however many years it's been so far. Do you miss living in Canada? Would you be going back home in the coming months - now that the restrictions have been lifted in England? What's your 5 year plan? Do you see yourself settling down in England for the long haul? Apologies if these are too many questions at once and/or if you have addressed them in depth in previous videos. Unfortunately, I simply can't recall if you have. In any case, if you think you can answer these questions in a separate video, that would be great. I ask because I have been contemplating living abroad for a few years. On that note, I wonder if it's easier to continue living abroad if you have a partner in a foreign country? Would you still be in England if you were single? Will we ever get a sneak peek of your incredible partner? Ok, I realise I have gone too far. I'll stop. Have a great day! :)

Hi Alanna, great video. Have you thought of getting a coffee cup with you name on it? I recently was given a "Robert" coffee cup and it is my favourite cup. I have a den (Man-Cave) here and that is where my desk is. Unfortunately, I have to use the lounge room when on computer, as it is an old large computer and it doesn't fit in the den, as I have books and other items in there taking up most of the space. Good idea carrying an umbrella when going out. We also have to do that here in Melbourne, as weather can be very changeable here. Love the train trip to Canterbury. Believe it or not, we have a Canterbury just a train ride away from here in Melbourne as well. At our previous home in Sydney, we also lived a train ride from another Canterbury. It was interesting seeing Canterbury over there. Anyway, wishing you all the very best. Robert.

Great vlog of your day! An important part for day, your life, that you only mentioned in passing is your partner. Perhaps one of these vids you'll give us some insight on them, how you met, commonalities you share, pet peeves, hopes and dreams, etc.

Really enjoyed the video, like I do the others but please Alanna, it is a RAILWAY STATION not a train station. Train station is something that has come into the English vocabulary over the past twenty or so years and us railway enthusiast are quite upset with the general public in not saying Railway Station anymore.

Hey Alanna, great video and as someone that also works from home, it's interesting to see the similarities and differences between you and I. A good drink is always a great drink (milk for me) although getting dressed for me is joggers and a t-shirt. I don't carry a bag unless I'm shopping but I do have a couple of plasters in my wallet.

They have “Heardle” now too, just guessing a song & artist based on the shortest amount of the intro you can. You should talk about music taste and things in these more personal videos too 👍

If you like visiting interesting places local to you, you should try the Gunpowder Works (out by Sainsbury's). It has an interesting history, but as it is so old and hasn't been active for a great number of years, it is now quite 'countrified' and almost feels like a nature reserve.

Carcassonne pronounced as it's spelt really: CARCASON (sounding the final 'N') - must get that game!

Was anyone else nervous about the glass of water positioning during the build up to "Let's go..." 😬I'm not sure Pug & Corgi were up to the job of catching it.

Hi Alanna. I did really enjoy this day in the life video. It was something a bit different from you and it would be nice to see you do that again every so often. :-) I don't comment often but I always watch your videos and have done for a number of years now. All the best. ;-) :-) ♡♡♡♡☆☆☆☆XXXX

Great video. I couldn't help but notice the subtle Edenbridge product placement while you were talking about Carcassonne. How about a behind the scenes of Edenbridge; how you select / develop the scents etc. I know you're partner doesn't appear onscreen but I'm sure you could find a work around.
