I'm a CSI student and I really want to work but was told I needed to be a civilian. It makes me hopeful that not all places require you to be a sworn officer. Maybe I'll apply in North Carolina!
Not all CSIs are sworn. You just need to check around and ask. When I first started, 35 years ago, I was one of three civilian CSIs in my department. The others were sworn. As the sworn CSIs retired, they were replaced by non-sworn CSIs. Now, everyone in my unit is non-sworn, including supervisors.
Information for those who need it. Many departments are moving to civilians for their forensics and crime scene units. The favorable and desirable degrees usually are Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, or Criminology. The next acceptable are Chemistry, Biology, or psychology. Degree levels can range from Associates to bachelor’s and some departments are now seeking Masters. (This is only a very limited number of departments). So, I hope this helps! 😊
Do you know other departments that have civilian crime scene investigators? Im about to graduate, I live in Cali and have no idea how to find what police departments has civilian crime scene investigators.
