Ever wanted to know what a Data Scientist does in a day?
Well I thought I’d share what a ‘typical day’ looks like for me.
Whilst there really isn’t a typical day, this is a tiny insight into what I get up on most days while working from home.
I work alongside a number of different teams including Sales, Product Management and Marketing to help clients make the best of their data. On this day I was focused on building a few new models, one to show to a client in the afternoon followed by a second one that I was demonstrating as part of a webinar.
If you have any questions, please drop a comment below!

Hey! I am a High School student looking to major in Data Science. I wanted to know the job growth of this career. Were you able to find a job easily? What is the salary like? Is there lots of pressure in the work environment? Do you see yourself staying as a DS? Thanks 🙏
@NicholasRenotte
@NicholasRenotte 3 года назад
Awesome stuff @DIVKING, let me break them down... 📈 Job Growth Honestly there's a ton of opportunity (including opportunity to grow) but as with all jobs in tech it can get hyper competitive! 👔 Getting a Job It took me a little while to get a job, a lot of it came down to how I marketed myself. Having a great portfolio boosts your chances of landing an amazing job by a huge margin! 💸 Salary Lucrative but you need to be in the right locations, especially where there's demand for data scientists. 😫 Pressure The team you work in often defines the pressure, I tend to work some pretty long hours but it's mainly because I really enjoy it. 🚀 Staying in DS? That probably leads me to the next answer, I definitely plan on growing into the field...at least for the forseeable future.

Hey! I’m currently a college sophomore and I have to choose my major between Computer Science and Data Science (my school offers it undergrad)! I want to work with data in the future, would you say that having a Data Science degree would be better in landing data science jobs than just CS? The DS major is basically a joint major of Stats and CS, but I’ve heard that you should get a DS masters to break into the field. Also wondering if a DS BA would be enough alongside a strong portfolio?

I am confused between mechanical engineering and computer science (DS to be exact). I love machines so there's my reason for mechanical engineering. And I have always a numbers kinda guy, I have an analytical kind of brain/personality. I love to analyze and organize raw messed-up data. What do you think I should do to select the one I want? Are my reasons to select DS ok?
@NicholasRenotte
@NicholasRenotte 3 года назад
I personally love mechanics (not an engineer in any sense) but I think I prefer working with data more in terms of analysis and building products. It really depends, my honest advice, try out the work in DS and see if you like it. Heya @Abdul, there are a number of courses which I found particularly useful! Specifically, I found the Machine Learning and Deep Learning courses by Andrew Ng quite useful. That being said I think it's most important to start trying out your hand at some experiments, try learning some Python, play with Pandas (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tRKeLrwfUgU.html) and build a machine learning model (ru-vid.com/group/PLgNJO2hghbmjNrHZqplNMEpsW-QLFdvJV). Hi Nicholas, I absolutely hate R, Excel, and everything MS Office. But I do have a decent practice with C++ (data structures and algorithms + competitive programming), Python, Scikit learn, tensorflow, flask and other basic libraries for DS like Pandas, numpy, matplotlib etc. I have finished deep learning specialization by Andrew Ng and an ML course from Udemy. I'm a final year undegrad from electronics engineering. I wanted to ask that: I want to be pure pythonic, even for data analysis or plotting. I don't want to learn R or other data tools. Would I be successful as a data scientist? Or should I ditch this focus on becoming a software developer (would need to learn some JS)?

Heya @Angela, few questions there: 1. From learning to code from scratch to my current Data Science role it took 1 year and 8 months. 2. I started my Masters but ended up stopping it as the industry was moving faster than the Uni could keep up with, it seemed like a lot of the content was out of date by the time we completed it 3. Definitely, as with all things, you have to be interested in it though!

@@johnpickwick407 thanks so much! I don't know if average hours is a good metric as there were such high peaks and troughs (and still are). From what I gather, one needs to have previous experience in other careers like software engineering, business etc. to become a data scientist. Do you agree with that?
@NicholasRenotte
@NicholasRenotte 3 года назад
Heya @Jeremy, I think it definitely helps, but it's not a barring factor. You can learn your domain by working closely with the people in the business. This is why the Business Understanding step of the CRISP-DM lifecycle is so important (yet so often overlooked)! From a skills perspective, there are many great online resources to learn from. With consistent effort there's nothing really stopping anyone becoming quite sharp as a ML Engineer or Data Scientist. As an aside, these are the questions I normally ask myself when working with a new team or client to get up to speed fast: 1. What environmental factors are important to this type of task or business? This helps you learn about factors which may impact your data or task as well as getting a better idea of your client's aspirations. 2. Where is the data from, who collected it, when was it collected? It's important to note the conditions under which your data was collected so that you can begin to understand inherent biases. 3. What is the definition of success for this particular project? This is where the skillsets bit comes in. If the client wants to have a web based ml model with 99.9% accuracy, then you know you're going to need to draw down on multiple skillsets (algorithm work and web development/software engineering).

Heya! For context I have a degree but it's not in Data Science or anything technically related for that matter. I personally think it's definitely possible to land a role in DS without a degree, there's great resources out there from leaders in the field and there's nothing stopping anyone from building up the skillsets required. However, if you plan on not getting a degree, you still need a way to demonstrate your ability. The best way to show people what you can do is to build an amazing portfolio of work on github, write some articles on data science and contribute back to the DS community.

Heya @Nicholai, they tend to work hand in hand and their roles often overlap (and differ from company to company). From what I've seen, most data scientists tends to work on all aspects of the CRISP-DM lifecycle, problem identification, data understanding, data prep, modelling and sometimes deployment. ML/AI engineers tend to spend more time in the modelling (actually training, building new algorithms) and deploying/implementing the algoritms into production.
