You forgot the bit where you’re hot bedding in a 2 man donga with a bloke who smokes ice and just divorced his missus who got custody of his two kids and is 3 months behind on payments for his JetSki.
Gives me nostalgia. I would go back for a while. Money is worth the sacrifice if you do good things with it. Paid for me to backpack around Europe for 8 months without working a day and pay off debts before I left. Worth it.
@@Caloch1991 So true, never knew this until 2 years ago my mate started working at the Tunnel in Melbourne, easily on average clears 3k. Home every night!
Thank you to all the janitors, bus drivers and all the people who keep the place functioning too. They deserve just as much credit. Everyone has a role in society.
My father in law was a FIFO bus driver on a rolling shift site. His day was driving back and forth between dongas and the work site in a continuous loop of tired workers. He did it for decades. The entire workforce that wasn't on shift or RnR went to his funeral. 😊
working hard lol mines workers havent worked hard since they started using vehicles for everything being somewhere for 2 weeks being spoilt having everything done for you but turn up to work and eat n poo lol no hard work ever! please stop shilling for teh fk turds that make it hard for everyone else! Next you will be saying Lizzo is a trendsetter........
Hats off to ya legend! How parents do this stuff is admirable! I was in the mines 11 years and it killed me being away from the kids. I had to get out. Wish all the fathers who soldier on in FIFO to provide for the families the best of luck and plenty of love when they get home!
Brilliant mate, I was a construction worker DIDO for a decent chunk of my adulthood, ended up getting into uni for accounting and financial planning in the hopes I could help the brothers out who blow their money on stupid shit and end up broke even though they’re on great wages. We’ll see how that ends up once I graduate next year. Video brought back memories of some of the best and simplest times I’ve lived so far. Cheers
@@DonRoyalX Hahah, I’ll send you a message once I’m done. Currently worked in an accounting firm for a year in tax, as well as done accounting/QLD TIQ internships in Samoa, Taiwan and Spain. Going all in on the accounting career 👍
Alot of our young men where I live leave school at 18 and think their fortunes can be made on the FIFO mines near us and it can. IF you can do the hours, be away from family and friends and do it consistently. My friends who do it lose contact slowly with our small community. I have nothing but respect for all of you doing so.
I agree to this. Ive been a mine surveyor in the philippines for 6 yrs and yes, life in the mine is like, you go to work while it s still dark; you get home already dark 😄 & it takes u away from friends and family. But vacations are there given which makes it good anyway.
I felt like my experience was awesome up there, I did 18 months on conveyor belts changing out rollers, some days I could barely lift my arms at the end of the day, 90% of the blokes I worked with were super respectful and got along with each other. Its either be in conflict 12 hours a day while labouring or be good to the people you’re around. You also don’t want to press a some of the boys who throw 30kg steel rollers around like children’s toys 😂I loved the respect people give each other up there. I have also never laughed harder in my entire life than when I was up there.
Big Up Tommy, from a UK offshore worker. Sacrificing time away from your family is brutal. But great to have that pure quality time when you get home. Stay strong lads 💪
If you are getting up at 3.45am working 12 hours 6.00am to 6.00pm it takes 50 mins to get home at 6.50pm you have 55 minutes to have dinner then if you want 8 hours sleep which you really need if you are working a 12 hour shift you are in bed asleep by 7.45 on a full stomach, that’s ruff
Worker's there work for the tax man, mines destroy the land and there is nothing in it for People of Australia, it's a wrought, what's good about it? 💩💪
Finally some Aussie saying youse and not y’all so many Aussie wanna be American for some reason it’s just cringe like mikeala testa started saying yall
I knew a few guys on camp that were barely hanging on by a thread from this lifestyle. Going underground when its dark and coming back up when it’s dark. Not seeing sunlight for weeks does a number on your mental health fr 💯 Not forgetting that sweet satisfaction you get from cracking open your first cold one after shift. Respect to you.
Wow, I definitely respect and look upon the Fifo differently now. This perspective you've opened up to city workers like myself, in WA, from NZ has really been an eye-opener and extremely interesting. Love your work, Tommy.
Damn bro, that is brutal, you guys are the real heroes, the sacrifice of general comforts we 9 to 5ivers take for granted. You keep the lights on. Respect
Props to you brother for showing the way of the fifo worker and just how brutal it is! People often talk about the usually quite good pay for the fifo worker but this shows how much you sacrifice. Stay strong brother. I do a lot of dido myself and have so for 13 years now. So i know the feeling of staying away in some shithole place but it's not as tough as what you're doing. Side note, you must have to be in bed by like 8 o clock to even survive day to day with those massively long shifts. The long travel to and fro site looks like a killer.
That site you’re at I consider luxury bro. The real MVP’s go out to the guys smashing their guts out at disorganised, run down, disgusting places where the food is almost inedible and the management don’t care about you. Stay safe man
Been doing fifo as a conveyor technician In WA for years now the Pilbara is something special 😂😂 I’m moving into drilling next month so see how that goes
Great video mate. This is exactly what FIFO life is like for sure. I think FIFO is great for single people and those chasing the money for a better life down the track. I love FIFO because I get to travel overseas alot. Ideally I would get a 2 and 2 roster. That would be the dream!!
@@MrDeano-eu9rg there are some new avenues opening up with renewables. Dunno where you are but there is a hell of a lot of stuff in the pipeline happening in qld over the next 10 years or so. Lots of construction with renewables and they wanna build two big pumped hydro plants (borumba damn and pioneer burdekin). There's a hydrogen thing going in in brisbane supposedly. Rare earth mining is rumoured to be taking off one day(not sure how easy or hard that will be to get into if it does). To be fair once renweeable plants are up and running they probably don't offer the same amount as permanent jobs as like a coal mine but yeah there's a lot of stuff going on for a while just in energy and generation alone. Coal mines are still around and in South West Queensland there is all the gas operations as well. Working in the gas would be similar to working in the mines. Probably not as dirty tho lol haha.
Shout out to you blokes, mining looks like a very hard job, long hours and time away from family, dirty and dangerous work conditions, without you lads society would crumble, unsung heroes!
What a packed day! I work an office job but seeing this type of videos is so eye opening. Really appreciate the miners in the lucky country. Stay strong and rest easy broths 💪
Yep DIDO and FIFO so many years i did that for except we did extreme swings of 6 weeks on 3 days off , great way to make coin though . However so many work mates use to blow whatever they made on toys and pokies , best advice i could give anyone doing this sort of work would be set yourself up financially for the future as working away all the time eventually takes its toll .
@Audiochannel32 I don't disagree with your point man. Guys get absolutely screwed over when it comes to custody of the kids, even if the woman cheats. I just meant not every FIFO relationship ends in cheating etc. There are quite a few where this lifestyle suits and works perfectly.
Bang on brother, after spending 10+ years working away as a FIFO operator i couldnt of summed it up better myself. Much respect, Stay safe and dont worry the day does finally come when you can tell them to stick it and come home for a "Beer money" job 😆
Malo lava le galue Tommy! 💯🥰🙏 great insight showing us your daily grind, also for our kupulaga/youth who may want to go down this avenue of work. Faamalosi Tommy! 🇼🇸👊❤️
Hey Bro. I'm from Adelaide,Work in Radio and Celeb Promotions an that can be pretty draining after 14 Hours. I admire ya mate. Hope ya get to see ya Family a bit more often,an just think how proud ya Son will be when he fully understands what ya do for ya Fam. Keep safe legend ✌️
Thank you to all these hard working men who work in tough conditions away from their family, friends and their home comforts. As I female, I cringe when I hear women demand equal pay when men are the ones doing the back breaking and physically hard work. Again, I thank you 💖
Men like these have built yhe civilization that we have inherited. I say this as a programmer working desk job and getting a decent pay. Professionally, we are on the opposite poles but i have a huge respect for blokes like you. Keep it up brother.
You're absolutely right, i work on healthcare and i have nothing but admiration and gratitude to the workers and their employers in the mining sector generating the billions of dollars our way of life depends on
@@exoxy not just mining, men like these create the very civilisation we live in. They build, maintain and run everything from roads to factories to petroleum, these men are often overlooked and not celebrated. While the privileged class is too busy putting their gender pronouns in their email signature, these "real men" are keeping the lights of the civilisation on. Unless the privileged class of the society sees and understands this, we will be inching closer to anarchy. This is a class war, but of a different kind.
This is the first video I’ve seen a bloke make in this format. Bit of a shift from the women that wake up at 8 and get to work at like 9-9:30 and then just sit around all day talking about movies and then go out to eat Brunch, Lunch AND Dinner with coworkers at restaurants every single fuckin day and knock off work at 4-5 in the afternoon. 🤣🤣
I’m a flooring Contractor who works a lot at Red Dog mine in Alaska. I could almost smell that coffee, got sympathy heart palpitation just thinking about it!
I can see you stayed at Mayfair Motel in Emerald.. Try a mining camp next time and do 3am PT. We can do AM PT together. Plus you're on the above ground kestrel coal site...
I did FIFO from Perth to Parabadoo a few years ago and we stayed right on site so we woke up 530am n started at 6pm doing drilling. Alot of the times we finished after 10hours n got paid for 12, all came down to achieving alot during that shift. Made 45k n 10 months n bought a house back n NZ. Was good times.
I used to do maintenance in FIFO accommodation in Moranbah. I used to have everything tip top for the blokes and I would refuse to use any power tools as about 1/4 of the blokes were on nights. The most common maintenance other than room stuff like remote controls, towel rails, door hinges ect was the washing machines. Had coal machines and normal machines and the coal machines were f*cked up on a fortnightly basis haha.
Thanks for the vid bro.. one of the best ones ive seen that shows what its really like. Look like a good dude to work with too.. all the best bro watchin from NZ
That’s really kind to show what its like Forgive me for saying this but I thought it was a lot rougher and harder You’re really being taken good care of , almost think someone is going to take your boots off for you because of the lavish food spread and nice bus ride 😅 Truck drivers have to do long hrs with crap food and drive themselves, after their long drive they have to wash the truck Love the view from the bus Thank you 😊 take care of the family x
you reminded me of the freezer I used to work in for 12 hours, it was for fruit packing and was like -5 degrees. I don't want to even remember how stressful it was.
Thanks for the video, very informative. Can you please make a longer video that shows more about what "mining" life is? The work you do, the rosters, the usual food, to expect etc. Cheers.
Work you do: very dependent on the role you've got. Most people start off in a big ass truck hauling loads of dirt up and down long drive ways, literally for 12-hours. Rosters: depends on the mine. Most entry-level mining roles will be 2 weeks on, 1 week off. That means 1x a week of night shift, 1x a week of day shift, 1x a week off back home. You may get lucky with 1 week on and off, or 2 weeks on and off. It's rare that "miners" (rather than office staff, engineers, geologists) would be on an 8 days on 6 days off roster. Food: Again, very variable based on the contractor. Expect lots of staple veggies, roast meats, roast chicken thighs, and curries. Breakfast is a traditional hot-and-cold affair similar to any buffet breaky you get at a 3-4 star hotel. Your lunch (crib) is usually cold meats, salads, fruits, and servo quality pies you can stick in an oven when on-site. Accom: not usually in a motel like this. Usually you have small rooms with a basic bed, bar fridge, shower, and toilet inside. To be honest, you won't want more than that - you'll be asleep soon after calling home anyway. A lot of camps will also have a communal bar and gym too. Bars only serve mid-strength drinks, and you're usually only allowed 4 per day.
Thanks for this vid man gives plenty of insight. I'm currently in the army in the training stage of becoming an Electrical Technician (we just call ourselves 418's or Tech Elecs). See where life takes me, I'm loving the army so far but I think it would be cool to work in the mines as an Elec Fitter and/or Sparky (hoping to get my A-grade during my time at a unit). All I know is I have both options of discharging or dropping to reserves after my minimum service and heading to the mines or staying in and ranking up. Happy with either but like previously mentioned, see where life takes me. Cheers for the vid mate 🤙🏿
I've been there brother! Well explained and gee it brought back memories. People, well most don't know the sacrifice... anyway keep kicking goals for the family! Peace ✌️
that’s bloody hectic bro. Damn. For you guys to do that day in day out, i got nothing but respect for you young whipper snippers. Keep up the great work and all the best to you and your fam!
I know a lot of army boys take this up after discharge. They're already used to the lifestyle of being away from friends and family and a full day of hard work, so they just fit in like a splinter.
Thank you for a reality check for many thinking that life is easy. Would be good to show life of a FIFO wife/partner, and how many expect the camp life continues when they get home or how they expect to have a week's holiday while the missus keeps on being a Mum/worker/housewife/and partner.
Great video mate awesome. Yes I’ve fifo and yeah not fan. Much respect to the lads and lasses out there providing for there family. I was doing 4&1 and it just fkd with my head to much. Missed my wife and kids that much.
This is like joining up to the armed forces minus the fighting...you gotta have a discipline life away from all the social distractions people would have in the city. I wish they had short term employment. I could do this for 6mnths
I did this for 2 years in western Australia up in the iron ore mines in the pilbara region. I was a polypipe fusion welder,49 degree heat and the flies are so bad i had to wear a face and head net. It was good money and a good experience but i was single with no kids, its a lot more difficult when you have kids and a missus and your away for 3 weeks at a time and home for 1 week.
Yeah I know a few who have done that same job at Rio Tinto mainly most of them hate it..also know a few families it has destroyed especially the 2 on and 1 off roster..I know a few guys that have lasted a month and bailed.
So many people tearing each other down in these comments! Can we all agree that this job isnt for everyone? These men and women work bloody hard. Sacrifices are made at home too with families. Ive been the wife at home, faithful, while he was riding the camp bike. A person is going to cheat, here or up north, no matter what. Its a decision. I can never deny that my ex was a hard worker, intentions were good. I now watch the struggles of 3 of my 4 children working away, doing their best, sacrificing. Im so proud and wont hear of anyone minimising their experiences.
My uncle did this job back in 2013-2016, it’s absolutely bullshit during that period he’s life was a hell just to make 115k annually. Now he owns a barber shop making more money living a comfortable life.
