This is a day in the life of Chiharu, a Japanese lady married to a Singaporean. Chiharu helps out the hawker stall run by her husband Godon and his mother. Mei Xiang Yuan was first opened by Godon's grandfather in the 1980s and is now located at Marsiling Mall Hawker Centre in Woodlands. The stall sells rojak and satay which are both Singapore's soul food.
In this video, I dive deep into the life of a hawker couple. What is it like helping out a hawker stall as a foreigner? What is it like living and working in Singapore? I hope you enjoy this video!

It's so amazing that Chiharu-san was so good at adapting life as a hawker here in SG. I really salute her for being such a supportive wife. Not many women can do that. Even me being a Singaporean, I know that being a hawker in Singapore's weather is a killer. All the best for your business.

Most people come to Singapore just to earn money and return home some day without any thought of integrating into the local culture. I will welcome Chiharu with my big open arms anytime because these are the people we want into Sg. It brought tears to my eyes to see the couple so happy. All the best.

It’s heartwarming that the mum sees the world with no division and very accepting of her Japanese daughter in law. I saw a lot of PRC online still spreading hatred towards Japanese… condemning people for wearing kimono at their Japan trip, marrying japanese spouse etc. it’s undeniably that japanese did wrong during the WWll but we should not be passing down the hatred. It’s all in the past, doesn’t mean we need to forget but we should forgive.

Because it is in the CCP's blood to brain-washed its citizens into hating other countries so that they will have no time to look into their own backyard issues created by the CCP.

You are no different from those PRC that goes around spreading hatred for Japan. In your case, you spread hatred about PRC. Grow up!
@fiesta2341

PRC is PRC, In China there is of course more hatred as their history with the Japanese is more ingrained with bloodshed in their countries history. In Singapore the only kind of resentment would likely be from WW2 but most of the elderly have moved past that. Unless some of them were born in China and became immigrants here.

the way she kept stirring to let the ingredients marinate well with the rojak sauce is a well taught technique. it's what usually makes the rojak more delicious because the sauce goes into the ingredient, no shortcuts. charcoal is rare these days so this stall is special.

Great job Ojisan! Like yourself, Chiharu San puts her money where her mouth is by marrying a Singaporean and settling down in SG, presumably for good. It's different from tourists who come here and do a travelogue or expats who worked here for like 5-7 and start babbling off like an expert when mostly they spend their time in their expat circle. There is nothing more Singaporean than knowing our hawker fare inside out. She top it by being one. Hat off to her. Take a bow Ojisan. Both of you are truly son and daugther of SG now ❤

Loved the video (as always!!) It's great to see younger people keeping Singapore Hawker culture alive. Even though I was only in Singapore for 3 years, it still feels part of my soul and I still miss all my hawker staples. And also wth - Auntie look so young indeed. Damn good genes lol. I missed the Singaporean accent - glad that I still can listen and understand with no issues - English obviously... my Singlish is poor hehe One important point in this video is that Singaporeans are usually very friendly and helpful and it's nice to see that acceptance of non Singaporeans is the cultural norm :)

Oh gosh, Ghibs videos are always a pleasant surprise to me❤. The last one, a campus hidden in a garden. Now a young pretty Japanese hawker😲! Personally, I think it is double challenging for a female foreigner to leave their comfort zone to settle in a totally new place. The person must have a superbly good attitude and mindset on top of being highly adaptable. Didn't know there's such a "gem" stall in quiet marsiling/ woodlands which is near to where I am staying. Aiyoh I love rojak leh and altho I don't take meat (hence no satay) but seeing the food itself makes me drool🤤😋.... Thanks to Ghib san, hope to make a trip there one day.

So much conscientiousness going into the rojak presentation. Again, I’m comparing to the old uncle rojak at Rochor hawker centre last row facing Bugis street market. The rojak I enjoyed is splendid, nothing fanciful the sauce is more thicker in terms of density but much watered down to soak the ingredients mash.but I can see the effort in this stall. There’s much dedication to even crafting a delicious simple dish of rojak. Good job. 😊
