DAY IN THE LIFE OF A PIPELINE WELDER ON TIE INS (A WHOLE TIE IN CREW IN ACTION)
Austin Ross takes you along on a day on the pipeline. Austin is a pipeline welder and is currently working on a pipeline tie in crew. This day the tie in pipeline crew is making two tie-in weld on a road section. He also shows you a line crossing and a typical day of a pipeline welder helper. Awesome video! My dad has been welding for a natural gas company (Texas Gas) for 30+ years doing the exact same thing y'all are. He helps maintain an area from Louisiana up to Ohio. Its cool to see what your days consists of.

HiYou did the cutting with very precise oxygen, and the fabrication that was done with Clemes, as always, I think the root pass flowed and the full pass was done with the same 6010. However, thank you very much for sharing these videos with colleagues all over the world. Thank you, dear Master

A week would generally be 6 or 7 days of this depending upon if hes on firing line or tie ins or in the fab shop

The road is depending on if it's a state or county road. depending which you are open cutting you may need to have road plates to keep flow of traffic to. Creeks are all 24-48hr cuts and you should have it restored. Doesn't always happen that way though.

Awesome video. You should break the footage down and explain stuff side and break over going on there. I’m not in the position to film it because of policy. But to explain putting the space in with the clamps would be awesome.

Out of a typical day how much time do you actually spend welding. It know it probably depends on the job and pipe, size, and layout. So how about the video here? Seems like a lot of time if waiting?

A day like this maybe 2-3 hours of actual weld time. Obviously, we spend some time getting to weld, rolling out and up, making cuts, etc. Other factors are weather, ROW conditions or terrain, on tie-ins specifically, the ground conditions can mess with timing a lot. Like you mentioned depending on pipe size one weld would take 3-4 hours, so it really depends and varies a lot. Tie-ins especially this time of year in the hills are drastically different than if you were to weld on the front end.

Could you make a video a little in depth of that machine you all are riding around in. do they take your personal welder off your rig and put it on that buggy? Or are you using their Welder? Thanks. Great videos. Keep it up.

Always cut more than enough if u have to don’t ever second guess a cut out it’s a waste of a lot of money and time

If we cut it too short, we would just have to put a “pup” in and make 2 welds instead of just one.

At my job we give the pipe an extra 1/8 from our take offs. For sure one side will pull and leaves us with the extra 1/8 to play with.

Been watching alot of your videos for maybe 3 months now really like the content im a senior in highschool and I found out my sophomore year that im a damn good welder and ive passed every test they have given you in highschool im really considering the pipeline at this point but my big concern is I know of a few people who have gone and gotten into drugs wondering if you could make a video or answer my question in your experience what have you seen on the pipeline

Why do they remove such a long section of the pipe for weld prep?

They didn’t remove any pipe. This all new construction. Unless I’m misunderstanding what you are asking..?

Hi Austin, thx for your answer. When you did the weld prep you had quite a long overlap and cut off 10 feet of the pipe. Why is that necessary? I just want to understand the fitting procedure.

Went to welding school last two years of high school. Worked in a shop for 3 years then for myself then on drilling rigs then started pipelining.

I absolutely love these day in the life bods can we purity plz have more I would absolutely love to work on the pipe line but my health isn’t the best so I don’t think I’ll ever be able to make the keep to the pipe line life and I’m 31 I can arc tig mig so and so forth have been in the high performance fabrication race car seen sins 14 so I been welding for a hot min and gosh It would be dream come true to weld on the pipe line I just don’t have a way to get in the door money wise getting a rig truck and welder all that plus the hole health thing so I’m 98 percent that working the pipeline is a dream that will have to go to the grave with me as a dream :( I feel like I’m 20 mentally but my body just can’t keep up :( well I wish you all the best in ur pipeline career may it be long and fruitful stay safe buddy

I never wrote on the pipe, but our helpers do write our stencil on every weld. Just so they know who made that weld.
