@@hallie1715 would you mind if I ask a few questions? How is it intense? How are you finding it academically I’ve got major imposter syndrome I won’t be smart enough!!! Is it mainly coursework or exam and coursework??? My undergrad is at uni of Liverpool in psychology!
@@jordanpaige7329 of course! Honestly don’t worry, you definitely won’t be the only one with imposter syndrome, but there is so much competition for these places and you wouldn’t have been offered one if you weren’t capable. Trust the people who put you in this position, they are the ones who will train you 😊 I also have a degree in psychology it’s a fantastic foundation for understanding human development, the basic neuroscience, and research methods. You’ve got a real advantage in that you’ve probably covered all of these things, at least to some extent, before. It’s intense in the sense that you will learn lots and lots and lots and lots of new information, and you’ll need to balance this with placement and reading and assignments and having a life outside of training. You definitely don’t need to worry about it because it’s doable (and in fact some of my coursemates balance a job and parenting with it as well), but I think it’s good to be prepared and think about how you might divide your time to fit everything in - which will be easier once you have a timetable. For me, I have to be super, super, super structured and have schedules and task lists etc. Re: exams/coursework. My course is mostly coursework based but we had one exam last term in phonetics/linguistics. I’m notoriously bad at exams and hadn’t sat one in 8 years so I was absolutely terrified, but I passed with flying colours. It was actually quite fun!
Loved the video! Have been following your channel since I started my SLT masters at City a year and a half ago. It would be amazing to hear about what it's like transitioning from student to qualified SLT. Congrats on qualifying! 💓
Thank you so much for your kind comment and glad you have been following! I found the transition strange due to the transition with responsibility. For example, as a student, there was always someone higher up that checks and supports with decision making etc. Whereas, as a Newly Qualified Practitioner (NQP) I make decisions independently which definitely takes some getting used to!

Wow, I haven't even thought about that, so it's that shift from being a student and then being a NQP that takes some adjusting? I'm hoping that transition is becoming easier by this time. I've heard being a SLP is such a rewarding career, how's your perspective changed now that you are practising SLP? I wish you all the best in your career and again your videos have really helped me as an A-level student :)
I know it might be a little inappropriate to ask as a stranger, but I'm an international student who is interested in studying SLT masters at City, and I'm wondering if you have completed some work / voluntary experience related to SLT duties for certain period of time before your studies or did you jump right into the master's programme after graduating from a Bachelor degree? I am doubting if I would be considered as I do not have a high GPA and I only volunteered/ interned for children education + some work involving older people in my free time as I'm still a student. If you wouldn't mind, I'd really love to hear about your story before applying🙏It would be a great help
@@Lily-kl3hn Hey, it's great that you want to do SLT, it's such a fulfilling course! In first year, for me, it was a general overview of the role of the SLT, so we studied children's and adult's speech and language disorders, audiology, grammar, the IPA etc. In 2nd Year, you go into further depth on ideas you learned in first year. In my University, 2nd Year SLT is fully dedicated to pediatric communication disorders. You also go on clinical placement in 2nd Year and practice assessing and treating patients under supervision of a qualified SLT. Again, 3rd Year involves more in-depth study. For us, 3rd Year is dedicated to adult communication disorders. There is clinical placement this year too. 4th Year is a lot more clinical placement and you take more responsibility for your clients.

I’m trying to change my uni undergrad course for September to SLT but Manchester, my previous offer for another course, wont let me change. you went to City didn’t you? I would be doing undergrad but the course looks really good

I am debating whether to choose OT or SALT as I have more experience in OT and have an interest with vocational skills however I am also interested in speech therapy with the voice and learning about communication difficulties.I am unsure which one to choose

Hello Grace. Thank you for your lovely comment! I did Biology (AS Level- which isn't a thing anymore) and then English Language, Psychology and Photography A Level. I then did Psychology as an Undergraduate degree. I think there are lots of different traits that make a great SLT including: empathetic, active listener, want to help others as well as MANY others!
Hi Emma, Congrats on qualifying! I got into the city masters this year and debating whether to study in london. How did you find the cost of living? I would only have the maintenance loan and the nhs bursary so I’m not sure if this is enough as I’ve never studied/lived in London before. Are you loving the actual job now you are working as an SLT? Any advice would be appreciated! Maisie :)
Congratulations Masie!! I found it difficult to manage on my maintenance loan and bursary had a part time job for 1-2 times a week. I was also fortunate enough to have financial support from my family! I loved living in London but it is very expensive :(. I am enjoying my current role. Good Luck in September!
Was your undergrad in SLT? Currently a qualified Audiologist looking to change careers to SLT. Unis have told me audiology bsc will defo meet requirements for msc but I'm concerned employers might not like that I didn't do the bsc slt
I lost my ability to speak. Since my mother passed away I became really ain't social person I would never communicate with another person I would always stay in my room 15 years later I lost my voice I lost the ability to pronunciation words correctly what advice do you have for someone like me.
Im studying a education studies degree hoping to do my masters in speech and language. However, I feel as though I will be in a great disadvantage. I do have some experience working with children who stammer and in audiology. But I fear it isnt enough with catching up on the anatomy or terminology of things
