Hanna was adopted when she was 5 years old from Hanoi to the US. At the age of 26, she decided to return to Vietnam on her own to search for her birth family. She was able to reconnect with her roots, meet some of her family members, and is now a dual citizen of the US and Vietnam. She has lived in Hanoi for 3 years now and today we’ll see what her typical day in Vietnam looks like. She will share her story of finding her birth family, how is the life of a Vietnamese adoptee in Vietnam, the joys and struggles that she has had while being in Vietnam.
Thank you Hanna for letting us share your story! Check out her social media here:

It made me cry though I was not Adoptee as I have seen so many orphans in SAIGON when I was living there in my teens...Wars had taken away their fathers, mothers, brothers sisters etc and some parts of their limbs as well; I decided to leave VN in the 70s as the sad scene had bothered me so much...could not study where surrounded with so many sad and unfortunate stuffs

Hanna is so good with those scene transitions. She's very good in front of the camera, I hope you collaborate with her again.

This is so cool because I came across this video not knowing that the doctor that Hanna met was my grandma. 12:05 in the video by the way! I'm also adopted in Ba Vi and I'm so glad that I was born and raise in Vietnam where I am able to communicate and know more about my culture. Unfortunately I was at the orphanage since birth and was adopted when I was 8 month old. I'm 15 right now :) and I am always curious about my birth family. I don't know how I should find them if I don't have any info about them though :(

So short-sighted for the Vietnamese to not understand that Vietnamese Americans have unique perspectives and insights that would be immensely help their students navigate the English language better than other teachers.

Very true, but not unique to Vietnam, as I think Asian American/Australian/Canadian folks face the same unwarranted prejudice as English teachers in Korea and China too.

I just found your channel. I love listening to you. I’m from Dallas Fort Worth. This area was a major relocation and resettlement of Vietnamese fleeing the war. Lots of markets, businesses and restaurants all over DFW. I grew up eating pho, and I am 45 now. I love dishes that have bun and com. My girlfriend and I love eating Vietnamese because of the veggies and the herbs that adorn the dishes. My dad is a Vietnam vet, I think he was out of Da Nang, but I cannot remember. My late Grandfather was a Vietnam vet, he spent a lot of time all through out the country. I remember him talking about how beautiful it was. I think the war touched most of us up through current day some how, even if just having a meal at a Vietnamese restaurant here in America as thise people who own these places came here as a result of the war. I’ve always had a facination with Hue and the perfume river. Oh, and HA LONG BAY as well. Someday I hope to come see Vietnam. I have been to Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. On business mostly, but I used to go to Indonesia for business and family as my ex wife is Indonesian. I’ve been to Batam and Java. While I was in Batam, the Indonesian coworkers took me to a refugee camp on an adjacent island. It was so sad. I wish people would remember history and not repeat it, but sadly that doesn’t happen.

Hanoi is also my birthplace, and Chicago was the first city I visited in 1971. It must be exciting and rewarding for Hanna to return to her birthplace and reconnect with her Vietnamese relatives.

Hanna's story is so inspiring, glad she was able to reconnect with her culture, and identity:) The continuing journey only gets better, I promise you:) speaking from personal experience. Most people who have not been adopted, don't understand the personal drive to find your cultural identity. Glad to see Hanna, has lots of support on her personal journey. Beautiful story:)

Hanna. you might not have western facial features, but you speak so fluently, beautifully and charismatically. Your figurative references such as "rainbows and sunshine" are so easy to grasp, understand and visualize. The Vietnamese students learning English from you don't know how lucky they are. I am a vietnamese immigrant who moved to the US with my family when I was just 6 years old. I can relate to your story.

Hanna is a remarkable young inspiring woman , see the young pics of her and her birth mother even got myself a little emotional. She is a ray of sunshine and confident about her future , Hanoi is a beautiful part of the world and the ppl are amazing and so friendly. The orphanages are a big part of Vietnam and Hanna is prof just how important they are , so I encourage people to always find an orphanage or a mama to support that are needing it. God Bless You Van and Hanna

Thank you so much for creating this channel ❤️ For those of us apart of the Vietnamese diaspora, it can be challenging to understand what life looks like in Vietnam today. Especially since our limited exposure of Vietnam comes from our parents', aunts', and uncles' memories. This can be challenging since they haven't been to back to Vietnam after escaping. Vietnam has changed since my family has left and I'm glad there are content creators like you to show those of us apart of the Vietnamese diaspora, the beauty of our motherland. I was born and raised in the US. Most of my family are in the US, Canada, and Australia. Many of my cousins were born in the US, Canada, and Australia so our understanding of being Viet is only that of being Vietnamese-American, Vietnamese-Canadian, and Vietnamese-Australian. I'm glad Hanna was able to share her story and reconnect with her roots. ❤️

Van, I really loved your interviewing with Hanna, while zipping all over Hanoi made it interesting. Like I said before, this pandemic has put a damper on my life, but Vietnam is still on my “bucket list” in life. I started my adult life in the Vietnam War for 6 years, I hope I can spend some time in the country that formed my entire life. Keep your videos coming. Aloha from Hawaii!

This is a great story and I am sure will become one of your most popular videos Miss Van. While the history is sad... the story is indeed great because of how positive this sweet young lady is. Hanoi is truly a fascinating city too and Miss Hanna seems to have really found her own way and realize the good side of things. While still rather hard to enter Vietnam it is fairly easy to leave and so the fact that Miss Hanna remains is because of her own desire. As mentioned before to you I am an American married to a Vietnamese I married in NYC in 1977 but who has been living in Vietnam nearly all of the past 30+ years together with my wife. And even during the lockdowns we feel ok with things and feel safe. I am retired now but when I was working... I was a risk management consultant. Having been involved in that line of work I developed a sixth sense about risk and for better or for worse I see potential risk immediately. Please... ride the motorbikes with long pants and long sleeves and with a proper helmet. I hope you both (MIss Van and Miss Hanna) stay in Vietnam to share your American experiences with people here and to share the joy that both of you exude. :-)

I would like to add: Never ride alone in big Cities in VN ; need to have a friend sitting behind to observe and seriously considering the surrounds and nearby bike Riders as there had been many situation where your hand/wrists could be chopped off as they saw you wearing gold Bracelets etc.. Your friend sitting behind could give you a second pairs of eyes...alerting you things going to turn bad /sour...LDB AUSTRALIA

It’s indeed a tragedy for a young child to be separated from her birth family. It’s not easy to find and united with the family again in consideration of the distance geographically and psychologically, and the cultural differences as well. Hanna must have a poignant moment when she saw the persons and stuffs in her connection before she was five. A touching story ! Wish Hanna all the best in her new life ahead in the country which she should have been brought up 21 years ago. 🙏
