Hi Friends! Welcome to my channel!
Often times my friends and family ask me, what is it that you do. And when I tell them I’m an Auditor, that seems to evoke fear and dread amount some.
And most people wonder what the day to day life of an auditor looks like.
Firstly I want to say that the nature of the job (in and of itself) is highly confidential. whether you’re an internal or external auditor, while having unrestricted and unfettered access to a client’s records, we are careful in respecting and maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
The first thing you’ll do when you get into the office or arriving at the audit site, is to check your email.
Correspondence is constantly happening throughout the course of an audit, so checking any emails or voicemails that you may have receive late in the evening the following day, will allow you to strategize for the day, prioritizing your work load and determining the deliverables to be achieved.
Depending on the stage of the audit, whether you are in the planning phase, field work & testing phase or the reporting phase... will determine the types of correspondence made.
Correspondence between you and your senior manager may consist of information for planning, confirmation of testing, or verification of findings.
Correspondence between you and your clients may consist of responses to any questions, variances, or discrepancies found during your testing, or any supporting documentation you need from them.
Next, we begin to prioritize and schedule the day.
What needs to get done, what all is needed for the day, what is still outstanding that you need to reach out to the client again for, and any questions you my have for your seniors.
Depending on the number of audits you’re working on and how many tests your performing for each audit, will determine much of the time that is needed to be spent performing that audit.
There are several hard and soft skills that maximize the productivity and effectiveness of an auditor. But two in particular, that I want to stress is communication and comprehension of processes.
Communication skills, both verbal and written will cause you to stand out amongst your peers and The ability to receive information from your clients and present it to your seniors and team will set you apart from any job competition.
And when it comes to comprehension, a successful auditor has the ability to adapt and learn various processes quickly, knows what and how to ask the right questions, and strategizing effective methods of testing, depending on the types of risk identified.
Many people have a negative stance or outlook when they hear the word Audit. They believe that as Auditors that we are out to get them, out to see what all is wrong.
But contrary to popular belief, the internal audit Dept within an organization is actually an asset to that company and provides significant value.
Whether the risk is financial, operational, IT or governmental compliance to name a few... The role of an internal audit Dept, is to assess the risk and internal controls and provide tangible ways and methods to avoid or mitigate the effects of the those risk.
