Does burning the pine in the wood stove create a lot of creosote? If so, do you worry about it being a fire hazard in the chimney? Or is it different from New England pine trees?
This was a super fun video and I enjoyed seeing a little of everything going on in your day! It’s funny we have a dog who asks in the truck and one who wants to help move the wood with us.
Homestead all starts with a lot of hot dog roasts lol, Nice to see young people going back a step or two in time to where you were prod of what you could do for yourself & live free & more off the land, It's a lot of work but refreshing at the end of every day ! Great job guys :)
Honestly, I love how well informed you all are. Love these content, and it is indeed wise to burn in winter than summer - smart. Thanks for the content!!!
Food for thought for your next burn, if you bring a handheld leaf blower it helps during the initial light to get it going nice and hot to burn cleaner and quicker. Cheers
Hello, I have a question if i may: What you are doing has a significant impact on the ecosystem. What you said about diseased trees and that they have to be removed sounds logical at first - at least in theory. But a forest is a complex system. How do you know that heavy logging won't have unforeseen negative effects or perhaps even do more harm than good in the end? Please take this as an interested question and not as an attack!
Thanks for making it clear this is a question and not an attack haha! I have read a lot on forestry and taken classes as well, and the mistletoe parasite can be thought of as an invasive species that is disruptive of the entire ecosystem. It rapidly spreads as well, I visited a property that has some of the oldest trees in the state of Montana, and unfortunately the mistletoe has in the last few years spread there too. The mistletoe on these trees causes huge cysts (i pointed it out in the video, it pulls all the energy to one area of the tree so the branches grow in an unruly and unnatural way creating huge dense tangles of branches and needles) to form, once the tree dies, it becomes an extreme fire hazard, basically a torch that will go up in an instant. We live in a super dry area, and experience a lot of lighting without rain, in fact we’ve had lightning strike a tree here once and thank goodness my sister was around to put the fire out 😅 Mistletoe also creates weak trees, which will be susceptible to other parasites and diseases which can then spread more easily through the entire forest even to the healthiest trees. If we had 500 years to wait for the forest to undergo natural selection, for trees to die and new species to be introduced, for fires to burn parts of it up etc. we could stand by and let it happen. But, we are working to help speed up these processes and create a strong, healthy, bio diverse, forest that we can also use to produce food for ourselves. We are working in a small acreage, so we won’t be impacting an entire forest; however, in the area that we are changing we have plans and are working to build greater biodiversity, by introducing different native grasses, and replacing the trees we take out with a variety of trees that will provide shelter and food for wildlife as well as our own animals!
It would and we do that when the circumstances allow. For this particular burn we had a lot of work to do around the burn pile so we didn’t have time to be managing another one.
Great job. I could watch a burn pile all day. Bugger the work feeding it to keep it going hence love the video. I am sure your animals will enjoy the new space
Hello from central MT! Loved watching this video and enjoyed how informative it was. Super glad I found you both early on and I truly can’t wait to see more!
I was really hoping this was going to be a good channel to watch, after watching this video I don't think so, she sure does like the sound of her voice, but I might just watch some other videos and hold off on judgement for now.
