when I lived in Hilo..I was anchored there at the end of the breakwater many times and some days you would get To'au and Ta'ape and nothing else, but then one day I hooked a refrigerator (stingray) he busted my mainland pole (good riddance) , one day a whale keiki came sniffing around the boat ...ohoh where is your mummy, ah there she is byebye be well aloha, and then one day a manta, another day the Ahi came right to the entrance to Hilo bay and had a feeding frenzy, until the Matson barge goes in and out, .. and the whole time Mauna Kea is looking at you.. that spot will always be in my heart, and the Big Island will always give me tears of best memories of a lifetime. You young ones take care of that place always and I know all the fishing characters on youtube letting all the fish go but if you live in Hawaii you will totally understand that fishing is a sacred activity and that keeping the fish to feed the family is just a sacred part of life also! This to all those who would take offence to taking fish home for food. That is why we fish! We eat, oh so ono, God gave us this and we honor this world.

Give you guys credit, using Google Earth it looks like it’s a 1.85 mile walk to the end of the breakwater. Carrying your stuff there and back over boulders with uneven gaps between them, plus the weight of the fish; what a haul. It’s good to be young,
Haha yup its about 1.9 miles, if we walk straight without breaks it takes us about 50mins. We have all had injuries from the wall (currently healing from a fractured toe lol) but its all part of the adventure. Mahalo for watching!
