Day of the Daleks | Doctor Who Marathon From The Beginning | Decent Return For Show's BIGGEST Enemy?

The ninth season gets going with the long awaited return of Doctor Who's most iconic monsters - for the first time in 5 years, the Daleks are back!
But is this season opener a befitting reintroduction for this seismic enemy or does it end up selling them short? Can the Daleks themselves carry this one or do the more successful elements have nothing whatsoever to do with Daleks?

This would have been the first Dalek story I remember sat down watching but it’s the Ogrons I completely fell in love with. Now, they’re too obviously realised and not terribly well acted but then, they had me a wide-eyed, edge of seat, entranced convinced. I think they comic book, aesthetically suit the Daleks, them all clumsily lumbering and slavishly apelike, make our Skarosian pepperpots appear a domineering, futuristic sleeker. I wish the new series would bring them back. Loved this, Chris. Gx

The attack on the Mansion looks so much better in the special edition where it's not just 3 Daleks and 2 Ogrons and that's it🎩

Such a hard one to rate - the story Marks wanted to write is very strong! The story we got has Daleks lazily shoehorned in..! Some great performances, some cheapness. It's in the middle!

The special edition version tidied up any small quibbles I may have had with this story 😁😁 but it was still an enjoyable romp before that. The strange escape on the quad bike with overly squishy tires was a choice lol

Big fan of this one. But not the special edition version. I like that the Dalek voices don't quite sound right, I like the dialogue gaffs, the Brig slipping in the mud, all the imperfections that make this quite a joy. Decent story, unusual time paradox for a Doctor Who at this point in its history. I just wish we'd seen the reverse 'ghost' scene with the Doctor and Jo returning and seeing their past selves, ala the novelisation.

My least favorite story of Season 9 by far. There are some good moments here and there, but the Daleks are forced into a story that doesn’t suit them. Making the Ogrons the main villain would have been better if they had also been a little more dynamic. Stories like The Mutants and The Time Monster have their flaws, but I find them more entertaining overall.

My first and for many years, only, Pertwee. I love it, Dalek voices and all. Woods and Barry are fantastic, both great foils for Pertwee and Manning. I’m incapable of being at all critical of it. Nostalgia has its privileges.

Almost my first encounter with the Daleks, as two Saturdays before this began, BBC1 showed the two Dalek films! The first specific Doctor Who story that I remember, though would apreciate it more from the novelisation, when I was older. Personally, I think that there being so few Daleks works to the story's strength, showing that Earth has been so utterly defeated, there only needs to be a few of them there, with the Ogrons doing the heavy stuff!

There were only 3 working Daleks for most of the 70s (with non-moving dummy Daleks to boost numbers...and tiny model Daleks for the army in the next)🎩

When anyone comments about how this story doesn't give the Daleks a necessary great celebratory focus for their return, I always (or at least in the last couple decades or so) think of Dalek and RTD's subsequent first season finale. I suppose that is how you really ressurrect Daleks. Forever though, this story has been really all about celebrating the 3rd Doctor and good time travel fun. The Daleks really themselves aren't at their best in the Third Doctor's era. Welp... except the last episode of Frontier... And yeah, I always watch the special edition of this one now. And the Doctor shooting the gun remains really weird.

The Daleks are amazing in Death to the Daleks ...just for all the wrong reasons "prisoner has escaped, I have failed, I have failed! SELF-DESTRUCT Aaaayayyyiiaaaaah"

Loving this series so far. I did a couple of marathons myself, though they were more sprints. I actually have a few questions. 1. How many episodes do you watch per day? 2. Will this marathon include the spin-offs and wilderness Years content? 3. Is your channel named after the film Marathon Man, or is that a coincidence?

I suggest “Wilderness Years” content be included - there were some interesting productions (apart from “Dimensions in Time”) like “Downtime” and animated serials like “Scream of the Shalka.”

The way I usually summarise Day of the Daleks: It's a great Doctor Who story, not a very good Dalek story

I really love the Special Edition version. The original Dalek voices alone make the original unwatchable, for me at least

I don’t mind a bit of tweaking, but the special edition went too far. It no longer looked like 70s Doctor Who. I don’t have an issue with the Doctor blasting the Ogrons. They undoubtedly would have killed people, so the Doctor was right to eliminate the threat.

This is another one where I first saw it years after many times reading the Target…and being a bit disappointed. Very cheap in execution and the Daleks really are crap. I do like the execution squad and I think the controller is a GREAT bit of character work

I’ve always loved this one. It has a great twist that was novel at the time, great actors and a fun well paced romp. It’s got atmosphere and some fantastic scale. Can’t wait to see your thoughts on the rest of this season!

I think this a bit of a so so story, I really like the first episode and then it starts to full apart, episode four tries really hard to make up for this by giving more context but it's a bit to late. Pertwee and Manning are great together.

Yeah this is easily one of the weakest dalek stories in execution. Not necessarily the ideas at play, but the execution itself. The special edition goes some way to improving it slightly, but ultimately it's lipstick on a pig. Is it as bad as say Death to the Daleks or Destiny of the Daleks? It's subjective I suppose I end up agreeing with you, once again, that it's a muddled experience Absolutely love this series, instant watch every time you upload :)

@chris_stokes it's just nice to have a light hearted romp through doctor who history, without any of the toxicity or baggage of the rest of the fandom You seem to be such a rational and reasonable person, very thoughtful. The kind of Dr who fan I'd like to have a pint and discussion with
