At the very tip of Texas, where just a river separates two countries, a vibrant Tex-Mexified adventure awaits. Time for some South Texas-trippin'!
Housed in a 1920s train depot, this museum tells the story of the Mexican-American War and how it lead to Brownsville’s creation. The exhibits show that Brownsville is a place where the histories of Mexico and Texas mix together.
You can visit the Palo Alto battlefield to learn about the first battle in the Mexican-American War. Tour the battlefield, get a bird’s eye view from the observation deck and even see historic cannons and field guns from the battle.
If you’re expecting brisket and sausage at this barbecue joint, then you’re thinking of the wrong kind of ‘cue. Sure, it’s still smoked meat, but Vera’s is one of the few spots left in the states serving up traditional Mexican barbacoa - a full cow head cooked in a burning pit in the ground. Don’t let the words “cow head” scare you off, it’s mighty tasty in a taco.
When you’re in Brownsville, just prepare for tacos galore. This local favorite is opened late and tacos are about a dollar a piece. The choices are simple: choose between 6 or 8 street tacos and choose your meat. Then prepare for a beautiful presentation of tacos piled high with avocado, onions and cilantro, with plenty of hot sauce choices.
The Sable Palm Sanctuary is an old sugar cane plantation right in the middle of a lush native palm forest filled with colorful birds and wildlife. Take a stroll through the sanctuary to get lost in the South Texas beauty.
Boca Chica Beach is the spot where the Rio Grande meets up with the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a pretty cool to see this water that has floated all the way down from El Paso.

Thank you for capturing the spirit of Brownsville. Not only food-wise, but historically, culturally, and geographically you have represented us for who we are and not a political talking point. This was my first time seeing your show; I am now a loyal subscriber. Your staff and your reporting were great, safe travels. "Valla con Dios". Come back during Charro Days, please.

Hi from Austin, raised in Harlingen close to Brownsville. I'm not sure if you meant the Rio Grande rivers coverage of just Texas, but I recently followed the river on the map and saw that the headwaters are all the way on top of a mountain in SW Colorado!

If you are a cowboys fan the pitada on Southmost Rd, February charro days celebration. If you get a chance to come back, the whole valley is full of great people, cities, towns, history, traditions. Sundays in the 80s and early 90s...tradition was barbacoa, big red drink and Johnny Canales on T.V. There are so many places in the valley to eat delicious food. Thank you and your crew for showcasing our hometown. We hope you enjoyed your stay and come back soon.

One thing we take for granted in the RGV is the taco prices. One order (6 tacos) of Bistek will range from 6.99 to 8.99 with Cilantro, Onion, Fresh Cheese and Avocado plus the Charro Beans and Grilled Onion included on the side. I lived in Houston for 2yrs and they only sold per taco usually from $1 to $1.50 but only with Cilantro and Onion, it would be an extra $1 to $1.50 PER TACO to add Fresh Cheese and Avocado not to mention Grilled Onion and Charro Beans were usually not included. That would be a whopping $15 to $18 for 6 tacos. San Antonio, ate at "Taco Blvd", is the only other place besides Matamoros and the RGV where I have found these type of tacos.

The Palm Tree sanctuary that you visited is one of the last remnants of a palm tree forest that existed in the valley. Now only patches are left along the river. I don't know if Santa Ana wildlife refuge or Benson State Park are part of that eco system that once existed over 100 years ago. Theres very little literature about it but I always found it fascinating.

How is it heat wise? My husband is literally flying back here to OR from his interview with Spacex. I’m scouring the webs for any info on Brownsville and finding nothing. We’ve got theee little ones and possibly moving in the next few weeks. But I’m kind of heat intolerant, like 80 here in OR is too much for me. I was looking forward to finding a place in town so o can walk around with my munchkins while hubs is at work. Even started learning Spanish so I can meet more people. I’m excited but I’m worried about the heat. And is it safe to walk around alone with my kids? We’re outside of Portland a bit in a small town and it’s safe-ish to walk around here. I would miss having that freedom a lot. Any info on Brownsville would be so appreciated! ❤ Y’all aren’t talked about much sadly.

@@ashleybuz8131Brownsville is very safe to walk around with kids! Especially if your husband is with you I would not worry. As for the heat 😅 around the 80s is usually around the coolest it gets, maybe even the 70s, but during the summer months you can expect it to rise to the 90s and over 100s on especially hot days. Though you can grow accustomed to it after living here for some time, as someone whose grown up here I can’t tell you what the transition would feel like. If you haven’t already moved here(or if you have and still want to know) i’ll be happy to answer questions as best as I can as a local 😊

Moved here due to work 4 years ago Having co.e from Ft Worth and Texas hill country, my husband and I cursed rhis place for months. Then when we started to actually figure out Brownsville we can honestly say how much we will not move away. There is so much to see and do and eat here. Many defected successful chefs cook here, the nightlife is quaint and safe with our police officers on horseback. You can wonder from mixilogy bar to latenight coffee shop with live local music or movies in the park with kids and dogs. Farmers market dow town every saturday. Miles of bike trails. Close to Progresso. SPI is 20 minutes away, maybe only 15. SPI & Port Isabel have great food!!! Cleanest beach in U ited States. Fun to parasail or do a dolphin day trip. The list goes on. Oh, and we have Space X and friendly folks. Come visit again, may e during Charro Days.

I would put Brownsville as one of my favorite cities not only for the food but for how peaceful it can be. Charros day is the time of the party where people come to celebrate peace between Matamoros and Brownsville so check out the parades. Also último taco is the most popular taco place ,like I believe everyone in Brownsville has been there at least once 😂

IMO, one of the reasons the time period around the Mexican American war is overlooked in history classes is a matter of timing. In high school and university, US history is taught in 2 semesters, one from beginning to the Civil War and Reconstruction to the present. Usually the first semester is over before the MEX/US is covered and the second semester starts after the Civil War.
@TheDaytripper

Why, theirs nothing here in the valley. People come here to die. Nobody has left the valley because they can't afford to. Companies are greedy and don't pay their employees right. They're robbing them on cost of living. They keep them at minimum wage. Don't believe me, I just moved down from N.Texas and the groceries and gas is the same price up their. But Companies don't wanna pay right. You ask me, the only good thing about down here is the food and gain a lot of weight. Other then that, not a great place to live..to all you who read this, I'm originally from here but don't like the valley...poverty, wages, Companies cheating everybody..
