As someone who was born and raised in Bruges, that's not why it's called 'het minnewater park' It's because the Gauls used to believe it was, along the banks of the river Reie, inhabited by 'Minnen,' so-called Waternymphs. The whole Minna story became a thing long after the place already had it's name but it's a more interesting story so the guides usually go with that. The lake itself was man-made in the 1300's, before that is was a river called Reie which is why we called our Canals 'de reien'

the difference with belgian fritjes is that first of all the patatoes are belgian " bintjes " very special type of patatoe, then the oil is really not a oil , but the fat of oxes, ( wit ossevet ) and first they fried the fritjes in low temperature until the inside is soft and lather on the fried the fritjes again in hot oil to make the outside crispy.

Fun fact about the square where they keep the Holy Blood is that it's the only square in the world where you can see every single architecural style from Roman (the Basilica) up to now. When a new hotel had to be build there people where in an uproar about it looking too modern, but had they not build it we would no longer be able to say you can see every style there 'up to now'

Falling behind here... 😄 So close, and never been. But now we are sure to go sometime soon. Absolutely loved this vid. Fries... You just can't get enough. Every county has it's own way, but I do prefer the Belgium way. Maybe sliced even a bit bigger. And well... Mayonaise... Also so different in taste wherever you go. Hmmmm... Thanks for giving me a "Fries Apetit" during my lunch break. (whole wheat sandwich with Beemster cheese. 😂) Destination Ghent... Best wishes to you ☺️👍🏻

12:16 "au revoir". You hit the wrong note there. English is widely understood and spoken in Flanders so there is really no need for French and most likely the vendor was thinking "just another bloody tourist/moron who thinks we all speak French in Belgium".
@IfWeGoTo
@IfWeGoTo 2 года назад
They’re not on this channel, just a guest. they probably won’t see your comment. Lol And why does it matter if tourists try to speak one of the local languages? I thought it was commonly regarded as polite to try? I feel like people complain about us only speaking English… and then they still complain if we try to speak a local language.. so like what do y’all want? Lol
@flitsertheo
@flitsertheo 2 года назад
French is not a local language in Flanders. Neither is Dutch in Wallonia or German in Flanders and Wallonia. You can speak whatever language you want in Flanders, people will realize you are a foreigner and will (mostly) try to help you, usually in a mix of languages. EXCEPT for French where you could be mistaken for one of our French speaking compatriots unwilling to speak Dutch under any circumstances. Then you could meet some resentment or straight refusal to help you.
@IfWeGoTo
@IfWeGoTo 2 года назад
Official languages listed for Belgium are Dutch, French, and German. He tried. It’s impossible to know everything about every place you visit without spending a significant amount of time there or having someone tell you. It’s a learning process to visit and even to post these videos and get feedback about it!
@flitsertheo
@flitsertheo 2 года назад
@@IfWeGoTo You make it sound as if any Belgian town could speak another language. In fact it's rather simple : Dutch in Flanders, French in Wallonia and German in the Ostkantons. In bilingual areas (such as Brussels) you can try both (never 3) local languages.
@IfWeGoTo
@IfWeGoTo 2 года назад
I’m just saying that a tourist may not know the difference. Go easy on the guy, he was trying!! I (Brandi) appreciate the info though, will definitely use it in future trips to Belgium! :)

the name brugge in dutch means bridges , since brugge has many rivers there are also many bridges .
@Erulin68
@Erulin68 10 месяцев назад
As someone from Brugge. The name Brugge comes from it's original name Bryghia. Bryghia means 'landing stage' in Norse. The name was given to the hamlet the Vikings founded here in 800 A.D. as they used it as just that, a landing stage to raid further in land. It has nothing to do with our many bridges. Also we don't have any rivers here, they are man-made canals which were dug to move goods about the city by boats.

@@IfWeGoTo Flemish Dialects vary mostly from East to West, with Brabantian dialects in the middle being closest to standard Dutch (with cities such as Antwerpen, Brussel, Mechelen, Leuven,...), going east you have the Limburg dialects closer to German (Hasselt, Sint-Truiden, Tongeren, ...) and going west you have the East (Gent,...) -and West (Brugge,...) Flemish dialects. West-Flemish is almost a different language, nobody else but the natives understand it.

its just a accent ''germanic'' accent what does that even mean the netherlands has a soft g sound in the south and you can almost compair it to the accent in belgium, some belgians like to call it ''flemish'' or the ''flemish language'' which doesnt exist, its just a way to try to create a identity around not being part of the netherlands but their own country ''belgium'' which is a fake made up country. not real.
@IfWeGoTo
@IfWeGoTo 2 года назад
Germanic is a linguistics term & it means the historical root of many languages like German, Danish, Dutch, English, Afrikaans, Swedish, etc etc. I guess it depends on how you look at it, dialects can make a language quite different. We're just sharing the info though, not our opinion on it. :)

hahah I guess I'm of the opinion that if it isn't hurting anyone, do what you want! lol. Cultural identities and dialects in the past created whole new ones, which is kinda cool! But I don't know any of the contention that may go on revolving around this!
