Many know this town for the slip and slides of Schlitterbahn, but that’s just one slice of this German town. A passion for the past mixed with many new adventures await you in a town that will make your day trip truly "das beste." (P.S. - It's pronounced New BRAUN-FULS)
One can’t mention New Braunfels without mentioning the famous Comal River. At 2 miles long, it’s the shortest river in Texas and perfect for an afternoon float. The most popular place to start your float is Prince Solms Park. Grab your tube, your beverage of choice, and hop in. While most of this river is slow moving, the city tube shoot near the beginning will give you all the whitewater you can handle and has been known to flip many a floater. You might want to hold onto your stuff, or else be prepared to make an involuntary donation to the river depths.
For a more adrenaline-pumping experience, head to the Texas Ski Ranch, where you can learn to wakeboard without a boat. Just grab a board and hold on tight as a cable-system pulls you around a circular lake. My advice for first timers: watch out for the turns, and be prepared to spend more time under the water than on top of it!
To start your day, visit Naegelin’s Bakery, the oldest bakery in Texas dating back to 1868. The fresh baked goods are made with age-old German recipes. The apple strudel is amazing and the old-fashioned German cookies like “spingerles” and “Pfeffernusses” will have you thinking you’re back in the motherland.
If you’re looking to add a little spice to your day, then stop by the Phoenix Saloon, a chili parlor housed in the building where chili powder was invented in 1894. They serve it the Texan way (read: the right way), as every bowl of chili is served bean-free with chunks of sirloin and lots of spice. Be warned, the “ring of fire” bowl requires a waiver. They’ve also got burgers and sandwiches for all those who don’t like chili (if that’s even possible…)
The best way to learn about the German roots of New Braunfels and Prince Carl, the German Prince who settled the area, is to visit the Sophienburg Museum. Here, you’ll see tons of German artifacts like a life-size model of the ship that families took to arrive in Texas.
Another place that is historic in its own right, and one of America’s most iconic roadside attractions, is Snake Farm (cue the Ray Wiley Hubbard). This zoo sits right on the highway and has been curing snake fears since 1967. They’ve got a wide range of the world’s creepiest snakes from Black Mambas to Rattlers and Cobras. If snakes aren’t your thing, step outside to an incredible zoo with lions, hyenas, and more. Don’t miss the weekly gator feedings. CHOMP!

Former Texan and New Braunfels guy here. When you eat the chili, you use the cornbread to cool your pallet after a bite of chili....but you have to save a little cornbread to wipe the bowl clean of the last bits of chili

After a long day of fishing on the Texas coastal bays and after many adult beverages, relaxing at camp, my nephew starts singing, "There's only one S in New Braunfels...". That was the first time several of us had ever heard that song. When we stopped laughing, we urged him to continue singing as much of it that he could recall.

Excellent segment! My great great great Uncle Wilhelm Thielepape, who later became Mayor of San Antonio, traveled extensively with Prince Carl to New Braunfels and other German settlements.

Chet, great segment on the snake farm but man it's hard to capture the amazingness of the gator pit on video. You really have to see it in person to get the AWE effect. It's crazy how many gators they have. It's amazing

Fun fact, my Grandmother Hoegenhaur had riverfront property a mile or so down river from the “Tube chute”. We visited often up through the late 80s, when the property was sold. Though we lived in Port Lavaca, we always looked forward to visit her in the summer…. As well as visiting Schwab’s, and of course New Braunfels Smokehouse for Wurst, jerky, and Apple Butter. I really miss those days.

Having lived in New Braunfels the past 45 years.... You should have been here when it was Old New Braunfels. Before the City Management outlawed having fun on the river or elsewhere. Its all about money these days but a few decades ago it was all about having fun instead of policing.

When was this filmed?😂 Friesenhaus burned down a few years ago and I have not seen the comal that high in years. Made me laugh you went to Naeglin’s first. Ross used to drive me to golf practice in middle school

Both my mother's and father's side of the family have been here since the beginning of Texas. My mom has a hand carved pipe that, as the story goes, was given to my GGG Grandpa by Prince Carl for saving him when he fell overboard on the trip. It still sits on top of her piano. The settlers on my mom's side built a pretty historic building in New Braunfels. I cant say the name because of - Mothers Maiden Name ID theft stuff. My GGG Grandpa on my dad's side was one of the original settlers in Brenham. Part of whats called The Old 300.

Loved this video! Quick question: what time did you go tubing? I noticed not many people there and the water looked pretty clear so I’m assuming you went early in the morning. What time exactly?

rumor had it that the Snake Farm was a front to a whore house operation back in the late 70s and early 80s. There is nothing sadder than that gorilla in the cage. Simply broke my heart seeing that.

I was enjoying the video until he said… “you think back to the day where there was nothing in Texas n.. why wouldn’t build a town in one of the most prestige rivers..” well, there were the “Spanish”, that’s a mislabel because they were Indian given “Spanish” label and FREEDOM by converting to Christianity. New Braunfels was founded in 1845 But San Antonio was founded in 1718, Goliad 1749, Laredo 1755 (both Laredo and Nuevo), El Paso 1680. All those towns were founded by Spanish (who turned Mex after the ind) who brought natives/Indians and converted local natives.. so TEXAS was not never a Land of “NOTHING” 😂😂

It falls back to the spice trade. Nutmeg was once more expensive than gold. Now it’s common. Think German chocolate cake.

Texas was one of four Mexican regions that fought for independence when Santa Anna declared the 1810 constitution null. Only two of the four won their independence from the Santa Ana tyranny: Yucatán and Texas. Many years later, when Santa Ana was overthrown and the constitution was reinstated, the Yucatán Congress voted return to the Mexican Republic, Texas did not. So your entire statement is really false. It’s like saying that Mexico is still Spain. By the way I am Mexican.
