Oh Lena, watching you paint in this video was like watching a ballet dancer, especially in the fourth study. The confidence and creative flow of your dancing brush as it swept through with deft and varied strokes was mesmerising. The beautiful seascapes appeared so effortlessly. Today’s paintings felt like a crescendo moment. I am very much looking forward to experiencing the last scene and scenes and wonder what they will be. I will be sad when April ends. You are nearly there!

Thank you so much, dear Jennifer. I am really glad that you enjoyed watching how I painted these scenes. This challenge forced me try some things that I had been scared to try before, so I am glad I did it. I will try to keep posting videos on this channel regularly, but I will definitely take at least one week off of painting when April ends :D Have a great week! Lena

Watching you paint has helped me so much in seeing what gouache can do. I love the container you use to keep your gouache and am using the same. Your colors are lovely. Thanks for your videos and daily posts.

Such a big treat watching you paint!!! Your confidence with such 'direct' painting is very inspiring. In the second painting, the 'white building' looks like white mixed with touch of yellow?? wondering which yellow, and which white that is??? Thanks for sharing your work!!!! Fran NM

Hi Frances :) For bright white objects in sunlight I almost always use titanium (permanent) white and a teeny tiny speck of cad. yellow to make the white slightly warmer, but not yellowish.

Thank you again. Your gouache paintings are like a flash of memory sustained after a particularly vivid dream. Both intense, and soft. Rich and subtle. So very inspiring

Dear Lena, I am a longtime admirer of your colorful gouache paintings. Amazing how you play with light! The Algarve rocks are a great example of that. May I ask what paper (smooth or with a grain) you are using for these series of small landscape paintngs? Always looking forward to the “untaping!’ Stay safe!
@LenaRivo
@LenaRivo 4 года назад
Thank you so much! I am glad you are enjoying this series :) For these small paintings I am using a 9x12 in. watercolor paper pad from Arches, hot-pressed paper, 140lbs. I hope this helps.

I have no idea why I like these...maybe it is the simplicity of the shapes, maybe the color (I love the color!). Everything is so ‘crisp’ without any evidence of fiddling. Hmmm, I think I just did say why I like these!

Your brush is so tiny! I’ve looked at several of your videos and it seems you often choose this tiny brush and others choose big flat ones and yet you all get amazing results. I guess I just try both and see what works for me? 😅
@LenaRivo
@LenaRivo 2 года назад
For tiny paintings I use a tiny brush :) For bigger paintings I use brushes of different sizes. I paint small shapes with small brushes and larger shapes, like the sea and the sky, with bigger brushes.

Stunning, as always, Lena! Did you use zinc white or permanent white for the foam in the water in the top left picture?
@LenaRivo

Thank you! I used permanent white to paint that foam ;)

How do you prevent cracking when the paint dries? It looks like you paint pretty thick
@LenaRivo
@LenaRivo 4 года назад
I have never had problems with cracking of gouache. I have heard that it might happen if you dilute your gouache with too much water. Also, maybe the quality of the paint matters. I use professional gouache, I don’t add too much water to it and it never cracks. Gum arrabic, the main binder of gouache is pretty flexible.
