Loved the Vlog. It was nice to see you hold your brush on the same finger I do!. I remember growing up and my teachers always trying to correct my grip, but it always felt right that way. I have a permanent callous near my nail there that makes me happy because it was caused by art.

Thank you for sharing this vlog! It was a treat to see the beautiful country side and travel with you down the wonderful path, and you look so beautiful walking down the path. I love the new postcards and I hope I’m lucky enough to add them my collection. The watercolor of the bird was great and I would love to see more. I love birds and yours are enchanting as are your country side paintings. My younger sister holds her pencil similar to how you do. I’m a lot older and the teachers were very strict and weren’t allowed to hold our pencils as we liked. The art teachers were the smartest and wonderful exception, they encouraged us to be ourselves. Thank you, again, for sharing your art work along with your thoughts and ideas. I appreciate you very much. Fran

I love your landscapes, but your birds just speak to my heart 🥰 your watercolour bird is perfect. Sometimes I wish I had the precisesness and patience to work like you. My sister has the same precisesness, her handwriting is always beautiful. I'm more everywhere all at once with lots of bright colours, though I do love the moody colours too. I think I love all colours and sometimes it's hard to choose 😄. I rest my pen/brush on my middle finger, how we were taught in school, but I've found sometimes resting it on my ring finger gives more stability. I know more people who use their ring finger, you're not alone 😊 Thank you for this lovely vlog. The panting dog sounds like a dark hound from the Wheel of Time. Pretty scary!

Thank you for taking us to see the sights in Surrey. The Painted Garden is very inspirational and I would imagine that the Haunted Castle is, too. - To be honest, I have not seen anyone hold the brush/pen like you do but I have noticed quite a few artists hold them in other "awkward"-looking ways. I wouldn't worry about it since it is your natural way of holding your tools, it's just another part of your uniqueness! 🥰😘

Hi Natasha I used to work in paediatrics OT and would provide programmes for children to build up fine motor skills to help with pen grip, despite the fact I have the worse pen grip, resting on ring finger with a thumb wrap 😂 the reason is to try and encourage a better pen grip is it gets tiring and the muscles get stiff the “wrong way” but it doesn’t really matter that much in this day and age, thought this might interest you 😉 and I love your videos by the way, always relax me!

Always such a gift to have a new Vlog. And to get to see how you are currently working,The Tri-pod is a great new way ti film and really does give the feeling og being in the studio with you and looking over your shoulder. The new "The garden Series" has gotte off to a good start,but they also look like spredsa for a picture book too,hope to see more of this new series in future videos and the new "English Fields Series" that ahs also begun with some stunning pieces with a new colour palette that really works for them. So hapy to haer about a new postcard set too!. It's always lovely to see you painting in real time,I love the magical feel your birds always have,so a bonus to see one coming to life in real time. Can't wait to see the new palette videos too as these are really inspiring and insightful. Paynes Hil looks like a realy stunning place and I can see why it has inspired you,a beautiful place and am sure it will transform when you return in the autumn and I hope that visit inspires you too. The miniature lanscapes you painted onto the beach pottery looked stunning and not surprised they sold out so quickly,treasured objets for sure.,they would look lovely in minatue/small deep box frames maybe,ut they are prect for your rich ;lanscapes and painting minatures is something they did a lot in history,so you are creating a new take on an historical way of painting.Your work is really ecolving and your colour palette is changing too and its so great to get to see this evolution in these videos you gift us with. (matt) Ps another artist who may inspire you in using soft pastels with water is Sandi Hester who has a channel here o youtube she has used soft pastels in this way and I thik ske inspired Kriksis to try it,but Sandi's videos about soft pastels with water might inspire you too. And I now hold a aintbrush,pencil etc in the same way you do,asfter my stroke and after losing an arm and having to rgeain the strength and use in my remaining right arm,holding a brush as I used to became difficult and aoften painful and put a strain on my wrist and hand,so I tried hoding a brush using differnt fingers and it really worked, no strain or anything.I think you adapt how you hold a brush in relation to how you work,I also sometimes use brush holders/ectenders as well,so the way you use a brush seems perfectly natural.

I got some to try and I love it,they say it's ideal for mixed media work (which it is!) so I thought of you,I think this shimmering paper would be great for your birds or your night landscapes or for moon paintings.As soon as I began working on this paper I knew I would love it and I also thought of you and your magical work too.(matt)

I hold my pencils and brushes this way too. As an early childhood teacher I work with OT specialists on finger muscles and pencil grips. I've found that the reason why we hold our tools like this is because Our index and thumb grip were not used as much or as developed and strengthened therefore we rely on our third finger for movement as well. I've always been a bit self conscious about it because I've been convinced that people are going to point it out and tell me it's "wrong". Believe me, during my time on RU-vid, I've been told that literally everything I do is wrong at some point or another by the Art Gatekeepers. 😂 (But I hear this from other RU-vidrs too - we pretty much all have to deal with it!).

Such a lovely video! I love the colour paint you used for the bird, would you be able to remember what it was? I'm watching all your old videos currently and enjoying them so much! x

Thanks Melanie! I can't remember - possibly Schmincke Horadam Random Grey 2022? x

@@NatashaNewtonArt Thanks for your kind reply Natasha, I've spent ages going through your Patreon videos and found one where you go through your alternative palette which you used for the bird painting and I'd narrowed it down to the Schmincke Volcano Brown! Ive ordered it from Jackson's so will find out if it resembles the beautiful colour of your bird or if I need to look again at their greys x

Always noticed how you held the brush looks awkward but it works that’s all that counts 👌

Harry from Art gear guide holds his colored pencils that way too lol. It always drove me nuts when i would watch his videos, iam always like " how in the Hell does he draw like that?!? " 🤣🤣 not in a mean way, but I do teach private art and Binding lessons here in my art studio and Bindery. I get people, here and there, that will resort to holding their colored pencils an extra finger down like you. It does give you more control, but it also locks your wrist and doesn't allow you to get full movement/motion with your wrist. And once you make it a habit of holding it that way, it becomes like a type of crutch... because you feel like you don't have any control unless you hold it like that. But hey, at the end of the day... if it works for you, rock on lol. Thanks for the vid Natasha, it was lovely seeing the English country side. Have a great one 😁

Thanks Deejay! Yes, it seems to work for me and it's what I've done my whole life, so I guess I won't be changing now! 😂 I always love sharing the English countryside and some of our history. :) I hope that you have a lovely day too!

I love the texture in your bird! Is that technique or granulation? And who is the artist who inspired you to use water with your pastels? Thank you!
@NatashaNewtonArt
@NatashaNewtonArt 2 года назад
Thank you! It's partly the type of paint, partly technique, and partly the paper - textured cold pressed paper is great for this technique. Kriksis was the artist who inspired me to get my pastels out again!

I've always held my pencils like that to write ever since I was a kid. When I was in kindergarten my teacher tried for a short time to correct it but my hand writing was really good for a 5 year old so she just let it be lol

This is so interesting! People always comment on my neat handwriting, and I swear it's because I hold my pen like this.

Hi Natasha, what paint do you use to paint on your stones? I am moving to the Essex coast and I am sure I will be finding stones on the beach and may want to try them for myself. live the Vlog as well.

Hi Steven! If you go back through my old videos, you should be able to find one from a couple of years ago all about painting on stones. I talk about how to prepare them, which paint to use etc., but to answer quickly, I generally use acrylic paint like Winsor & Newton Galeria, or Daler-Rowney FW Acrylic Ink in white for the ones where I'm just painting delicate nature designs like a feather or a leaf. :)

Hi Natasha! I like your new setup but unfortunately I'm getting pain in my neck from turning my head so I can see what you are doing. Sorry but this doesn't work for me. I love your painting though. I hope your migraine has gone! The scenery in this video is amazing! I love it. I love the caves, is it?? Such beauty. Have you ever heard of Mary Fedden? Her art is beautiful!! A black dog eh? I remember that Led Zeppelin had a song called Black Dog. Maybe it's from the same place? Who knows...Take care dear!

I'm going to look up Mary Fedden now, Michele. The name rings a bell! I'll try to have the tripod at less of an angle, or mix in overhead shots in future videos. :) Wishing you a lovely day!

Hello, Natasha. Yes, I have always noticed they way you hold pencils/brushes. I don't think it is especially uncommon. Nor is it uncommon for teachers and/or parents to attempt a 'correction'. (sometimes cruelly and with disastrous results for the child). The roof of that cave knocked me out - nature does these precise geometrical forms with such ease. I'm looking forward to the sharp change in your work that you previewed here. I have a question for you and any other newts that have an opinion. What is the ratio of men to women followers and newts? AND is that a general trend on YT? Are there more women than men creating art channels and more women than men following art channels? Or is it just my bias?
@NatashaNewtonArt
@NatashaNewtonArt 2 года назад
You won't believe this but the cave (grotto) at Painshill is actually manmade! It's incredible! I can tell you that my following on both Instagram and RU-vid usually hovers at around 88% women and 12% men on both platforms. I think that there are possibly two male Newts on Patreon! (I'm not sure). I assume that women are perhaps a) more into using social media than men, and b) because I'm a woman making art, I attract female followers who are interested in and/or make art? But honestly, I have no idea!
