The strength of this scene lies in the fact that a person who does not know the world of motor racing can understand the passion and desire of these men behind the scenes... Tony Scott was a genius at conveying emotions... When I see Robert Duvall in this scene, I cry like a child every time... When he talks with the chassis, when the man talks with the machine, when the man breathes a little bit of his soul into something that should not have any... The magic happens... A thought for all the mechanics who don't count their hours to make a dream or a legend live or relive...

This scene reminded me about Rusty Wallace and his love for the "Midnight" car no matter what body it had. It went into the NASCAR HOF, as a Ford Thunderbird, when he was inducted. Back in '96, I got to drive it's backup version. I worked at DIS 1996-2006 as part of the security/safety teams. My uncle was a high level executive for MAZAK Industries, one of Rusty Wallace's sponsors. I was told if I wrecked it, I had to buy it. 174+ mph for two laps on the DIS track. Rusty gave me an autographed die-cast replica of the car and it's on my desk in a protective case.

In this whole scene, the first seconds are almost quiet while Robert Duvall speak to the chassis and then the crew build the car. But it starts to be serious at : - 00:40 the beginning of the construction with the crew. - 01:16 to make us feel the end is near. - 01:29 we guess the car will be beautiful and Robert Duvall is smiling and still alone with his baby. - 01:36 is just the best moment, the WOW effect ! It's not only about the scene, it's also the background music that match perfectly because it's the same thing. Hans Zimmer, you're just the best !

The ingenuity and tricks these mechanics and fabricators have is outstanding. Great competitors.

Back a few years ago, one trick they were doin is punching small holes on the top corners of the tires. It would only let out a little bit of air when that part of the tire was on the pavement. So when tires were changed and they got on the track, after getting the air inside the tires hot it would remain roughly the same psi due to light purging of air and can take the turns better. Became a problem when a few unlucky drivers stopped on the track for red flags and stopped the tire on the right spot to constantly bleed air and nascar was wondering wtf these guys had flat tires out of nowhere for lol. Good ol tiregate

Luckily, my father and grandfather conditioned me well from a young age to take pride in everything I do and say, because my name would be attached to it. Eventually, this valuable life lesson would be more well-defined, on-the-grounds-that, it wasn't only just my name that was attached to everything I do, it was also attached to my father's and Grandfather's name as well.

I wish they had made this scene much longer by going into more in depth details of how they built the car but Hans Zimmer's awesome theme music probably would've ran too short for such an extensive version.

i love the smokey reference about a fuel line that holds an extra gallon. nascar told him what size fuel cell and what capacity but nothing about the line so he ran a 3 inch line that was extra long just to hold more fuel.

Ah man, such memories! Bear with me now; as an early teen in '91, me and my cousin played the heck out of Days of Thunder on NES. We were both obsessed with that movie and Nascar. I was particularlly obsesed with that scene and music so much that I dubbed it from VHS to radio casstte, and played it back to back while I built a tube frame slot car from plastic sprues from model kits, a motor from who knows what toy I dismantled, and a Dodge Ram Nascar truck body made of several layers of thin foil, so it could sustain realistic damage on my cousin's slot car track. Of course, I painted my truck in the classic Mopar Performance livery of the day!!! I honestly think that it's a problem that no modern movie or music pushes or drives kids to go on and just build stuff! Everyone's going electronic, and almost no one has interest in manual work anymore!

That's how NASCAR should be nowadays. Racing as a sense of life, small teams, low budget. In short, away from high society sport back to the roots.

If I could own a Nascar of that period, or even a replica, I'd have it in that livery. I was actually quite disappointed to learn that the dealership in real life is blue and white.

its suppoed to be windage and not wind.. and you can gain hp by cutting down the windage from having a bigger oil pan with the right mods...

@@dxknudsen well I'd suggest you get off you tube and get selling your 40hp oil pans, also I can't see how it would increase HP maybe improve drag Coefficient meaning existing HP will improve top speed but mechanically speaking the HP output won't change i don't think.

That style of stock car was fun to watch, they got airborne if turned around at high speed, could drive through the grass and had no spliter in the front to plow into the dirt. And if anyone here is old enough to remember the famous "pass in the grass" (Which WAS legal in that case) you'll know what I'm talking about.
