Daytime Fox Calling in Ireland

Out the other evening at the foxes, I was on a field that had been cut a few days previously and decided to give it a quick call to see if if could get a fox.
I had just set myself up into position and like I always do I sat and watched for 15 minutes before I started calling, I didn't get the opportunity to start calling when this fox appeared out along the bottom hedge. As you can see this fox seems to have a bad limp and was carrying its back right leg. when I examined the dead fox I could see no sign of visible damage.
I was hoping that he would come a little closer for a shot. I tried calling to see if he would come in to get an easy meal. I knew the fox could hear me but for some reason would come in to investigate. After a few minutes I decided to take the shot, I steeped it out and it was roughly 122 yards, which isn't a big distance for the .22-250. The shot placement I was aiming for was the head, my shot went a little low and hit the fox in the neck but still killed it straight away.

Good to see a different perspective from the other side of the world. The electronic caller kept his attention but he certainly didn't want to commit. Do you use mouth callers in Ireland as over here in Australia that is our primary weapon when calling in foxes.
5 лет назад
Cheers Mate. Yea. It’s good to get there attention alright. We mostly use mouth calls in Ireland. Although for the tricky foxes we sometimes use electronic calls, although they are illegal you need to apply for a special license to use them. What part of Australia are you in? I’m going to Australia in September.
@BoltActionProductions
@BoltActionProductions 5 лет назад
@. We are in Victoria mate and do a little whistling ourselves.
5 лет назад
I’m for Sydney. Going for 3 weeks, but might extend it a little further and do a little exploring while I’m there. Would there be much of a fix problem in Sydney/NSW? What calls do you guys use?
@BoltActionProductions
@BoltActionProductions 5 лет назад
@ Fox problem all over Australia but you would need to get out of Sydney to be able to legally shoot them. We actually have a $10 bounty on them payed by the government in Victoria. Whistles? Mainly what we call a Tenterfield which is primarily a bent bit of tin. Every now and then I will use an electronic caller and the Icotec GC500 gets the job done. Recently we were given a combination Tenterfield style whistle made out of plastic and it is rapidly becoming my favourite. If you are interested in having a look you can check out the first day we used it here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KwBKPqE0DnM.html . I hope you enjoy your trip downunder. Make sure you keep us in the loop.

Thanks for the information. I wouldn’t mind seeing abit of the real Australia and not just the tourist bits. I have a tenterfield call, but I have tried and tried with no luck actually getting a decent sound out of it. I’ll check out the link to the video.

You know when I lived in England I lived there for thirty years I once tried for a shotgun licence since every time I went shooting and I'd have to borrow a mates gun I was told unofficially of course that not a hope on hell as my name was too Irish go figure

Halfcan Tan stereotype of the Irish people throughout that period of time I’m afraid. I’m sure many more good Irish people received the same type of treatment in the U.K.

Nicely taken bud and to be fair you did it a favour as it was clearly struggling with that bad leg/ foot. And that's a nice looking rifle you have there.👍

jim wood cheers Jim, yea it was a nice fix to take out. I didn’t realise at the time how bad his back foot was until I watched the video footage back. The rifle is a Browning X-Bolt in .22-250 it’s the Stainless Steel Stalker model, topped with a Leupold 3-9x50 scope with an A-Tec moderator. It’s a good set up for me at the foxes.

I like to get as much footage as the fox as I can. When you get the opportunity to film them, I always do probably take little bit longer to shoot them, than I should.

haha, I actually think you may be talking about me looking at the camera lol. Sometimes the camera is set up in unstable positions and can fall over or move slightly. I must have been making sure that it was still on me. Ill take your advice next time I have the camera out with me.

Things must have changed a lot over there since the '70's and '80's. Walking around dressed like that back then you would probably be wearing pine and getting a gun salute at your burial after the SAS took your head off. If you waited any longer the fox would have walked up and licked your barrel! Back leg maimed, probably by the blind bastard on the Crawford Fox shoot. Fair play though, you got it very cleanly in the end. Nice shooting at that distance.
4 года назад
Haha, very true about the 70s & 80s. Although thank god times have changed for the better. What’s the Crawford fox shoot? Thanks, it was a good shot that had to be took.

Antaine Ó Dufaigh Don’t see much point shooting the cub for no reason.. to easy done.. that’s why hounds were invented.. 😉
5 лет назад
You got to look at the bigger picture. This fox will at some stage start to kill chickens and lambs on the local farmers. We have to keep on top of them at all stages to keep their numbers in control. Also there is no packs of hounds that operate in this area.
@stiofain4693
@stiofain4693 5 лет назад
Antaine Ó Dufaigh I understand that as I hunt the fox myself with small pack of hounds and lurchers... from Ireland myself, to me it gets a fair chance but as I said each to there own..

Why was it's body still moving at the end
4 года назад
Hi Nathan, it is basically the reflexes releasing any of the energy left in the muscles. The fox is dead when it was hit, if it was not it would have been shot again. It is quite common to see shot animals moving slightly just after they have been shot. Thanks

@ thanks I was just curious seeming as me and my dad only fox hunt at night with our neibhours and have low visability
@randomuser3476
@randomuser3476 4 года назад
@@stephbhoy1 yes it is a fox got into my neibhours sheep farm once and three lambs were taken in the one night all that was left was blood and lamb wool three might not sound like a lot but it's three less sheep at the end of the day that were in pain as they died hope that answered you question
4 года назад
stephbhoy1 they do need culled to keep their numbers under control. In ireland the Fox is an A-Pex predator, they have no other animals that control their numbers. The only thing that really controls them is humans & getting knocked down by cars. The damage they do is often unseen, they kill other farmyard livestock. Namely chickens, ducks & lambs. The Financial implecations for a farmer can be huge and have a big impact on their bottom line. As people that take part in fieldsports, we don’t want to kill all the foxes, it would be impossiable anyway but we want to keep their numbers down to reasonable levels so that they can live in the area without having to kill livestock.

Really good shot! Just curious, why did its ears go back and head start twitching like mad at the end?
5 лет назад
RevyTwoHands2K11 Thanks. It’s a thing called cadaveric spasm, it is basically the muscles stiffening that occur at the moment of death.

You could only whistle him in to 122yds with all that expensive clobber you have ? Whistle them in to 20yds and use a 22LR. That way if you miss, your 22/250 bullet and it's rapport won't arrive in the next county along with every other fox in the vicinity.
4 года назад
I have done it before & will continue to call them in again to that distance. The .22-250 sounds loud on the video, although its not actually that loud. I have often shot one fox with a .22-250 & within minutes another fox will come to the call
