From my Facebook post:
I picked up a 2nd place finish in wingless at Rockfish Speedway in North Carolina for their Winter Classic race!
On Friday night I qualified 7th-fastest out of 50 to start second in my heat race. I quickly took the lead and held it to the finish. My placing in the heat set me up to start third in the feature. The rain didn't hold off enough to get any A-mains done that night, so they were run on Saturday instead. This meant the race would be done in the the afternoon with the sun blazing.
From the first lap, I was itching for an open lane to pass my way to the front. After a few one-lap restarts, I found an opportunity to pass for the lead! I held that through many more cautions until a restart around lap 20 of 30. The track had lost most of its moisture and slicked off to a black ice - my soft tires didn't stand a chance. Two competitors got by me before the end of the race for a third place finish.
A few hours after the race ended, I learned that the winner was disqualified for their car being underweight, meaning I was paid for second place! I'll take the extra cash 🙂
The race included another day of racing after the wingless feature event. My winged racing on Saturday started off well, qualifying third-quick out of 41 competitors. I started first and held it to the end with a half-track lead. However, coming to the finish line out of corner four when a mechanical issue caused me to lose power. The car coasted across the finish line with plenty of my lead left. Unfortunately, it was an unfixable issue with the spare parts we brought. Being the fastest car out of the heat races and not being able to race the feature is heartbreaking, but that's racing!
To end things on a better note, I learned that I won an extra $250!! They spun a "wheel of fortune" to award extra cash to a driver who didn't win, and they spun second place. Thanks to Rockfish Speedway and their sponsors for putting on a great event with great payout.
