I don't know why it should be making noise at high SPL I mean that's not really that high!! does it happen on both speakers? if you try one individually I wonder if there's a fault? what you could do and it will tighten up the bass is to get two thick 2-in washers and stick them on the centre of the radiator with some blu tack it won't leave any mark, that should help and give it a bit more control in the bass as well. try it..! seems like they're not weighted properly or the cabinet's not the right volume. have you checked the screws on the drivers are they all reasonably tight? that could cause noise. tighten them up a bit anyway they do loosen even new speakers shrinkage. about the same tightness as a spark plug if you know what that is 8 to 10 newton metres

These need to be active to get the best out of the components, in my estimation at least.

78db sensitivity & a 200 watt rating is outrageous. at a full 200 watts you would have to be 2 feet from the speaker to achieve 105db reference. these are desktop speakers. before 3-6db of room gain. which is still very low.

@nc3419
@nc3419 2 месяца назад
SVS has gotten alot of attention these days. Thomas' SE speaker was another for around the same price but now sold out. Myself, I looked at upscale options from what I have now but still in a small form factor as I have the Dali Opticon 1s with a small sub but don't know if any would even outright beat them. Perhaps a bit more weight to notes and resolution, perhaps a bit more detail. really looking for more stage depth and separation. But the low sensitivity of 78.5dB as stated really needs power. I once had the Def Tech SM45s about 85dB which on a Hegel sounded pretty good but not on lower powered amps. Asking alot for small amps regardless of wattage if speakers need current and I suspect these need more power than what smaller amps can muster to stay balanced and musical. Plus, some speakers just don't sound good at low SPLs. My next upgrade speaker in keeping with a more compact speaker maybe the Closer Ogy which is double the price and likely still with a sub for fillin. I would look at these if I thought they could play well at low to moderate SPLs. When someone talks 95 dB...I'm just not there. Still a bit skeptical at lower SPLs as it changes how the bass interacts and still low sensitivity to boot to really activate bass. Stated by a review on amazon to be soft and laid back which may be pleasant but also insufficient for movie soundtracks. Just don't know for sure. Plus the bass seems a bit bloated to me as I prefer fast and tight with some degree of texture. I would opt for SVS whether nano or the larger bookshelf. And most still larger than I want but it's what is needed for some bass. With a sub, in a small room or nearfield, perhaps not as critical for sub.

I purchased the SvS ultra. They are ok. They kind of suffer from low sensitivity. These opal 1 speakers are ridiculously inefficient and have a terrible frequency response. I got Svs ultra after owning the prime towers. Which were great. Polk R series a significant upgrade over SVS in my opinion.
@nc3419
@nc3419 2 месяца назад
@@whome8192 Good to know how they compare. My Opticon 1s were an easy purchase at half off and worked out with my amp. More neutral, bass not accentuated but works well with a sub. Also, measured higher sensitivity than what Dali published which typically isn't the case. I had a chance to buy open box MK2 versions at half off too but weren't sure if they retained their sensitivity and the frequency curve on the Opticon 2 mk1 and MK2 models were different, so the Opticon 1 MK2 still had alot of unknowns especially as the Opt. 2 seemed to resemble the Menuet SE curve. Also tried the Menuet SE versions, more resolution, note weight but much lower sensitivity and falls below 4 ohms so alot harder to drive. Wanted to like but overly refined to point of missing info in music. The high frequencies were shown to be alot lower in comparison to the mids. The older Opticons have just enough. Even the Rubicon 2 has alot more extension as some state they are too bright sounding. But once you have a system that works well together, it's hard to want to make changes.

Sometimes i just shake my head in sad, disappointing disbelief. Audio people, technical and otherwise, puff their chests out and start spewing theories and technical prowess, making jokes, etc. Shame on you to approach it in this manner. This man, sets up a pair of speakers in his listening room, through multiple amps of different power ranges, and plays music he is familiar with. Not to mention the efforts of video production. He then gives you his subjective impressions regarding this experience. Thank him and move on. Buy them. Dont buy them. Really?? $800?? In this hobby, that is surely "entry level" money at best. If you haven't spent more, and gotten less, you haven't spent much time in this hobby. A lot of manufacturers, not all, overcharge for what they deliver. Doesn't seem to be the case here. Synergy. Not perfection, shoud be the goal. And only your ears can answer that for you, not measurements. That also, seems ro be the case with this reviewer. Stop acting like a bunch of know-it-alls and get back to moving the hobby forward with questions and positive reinforcement. I own somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 pairs of speakers. They all have strengths and weaknesses and their sound signatures change when paired with different equipment and cabling. 2 pairs cost less than $800, and the other 5 pairs, significantly more than $800. I own a pair. My friend owns a pair. They sound better than any $800 speaker has the right to, powered by my 200wpc Van Alstine modified Dynaco 400, 8 1/2 feet out. The experiment handly besting a pair of $6500 Sonus Faber stand mounts. Conversely, the exact opposite happened in his sound room. The Opals, powered by a $7000 NAIM integrated, were easily bested by the Sonus Fabers, 2' out. My point?? All factors make up the synergy. Room(size and shape). Equipment. Cabling. Master quality of the recorded medium. Does every track you listen to on your system sound amazing?? I highly doubt it. I haven't found perfection to be obtainable so far. Synergy is elusive, but a more worthwhile target in my opinion. Let's keep the hobby fun, and enjoy the journey this hobby offers. Peace.

Good thing you’re not “a speaker engineer”. Design is about tradeoffs. Small, efficient, deep bass. Draw a Venn Diagram and pick two. This design concept is clearly geared toward a small speaker with deep bass, therefore you lose efficiency/sensitivity, not your job.

God i wanted so much to love these and i gotta be honest, im so so glad i didnt buy em. Im not being a downer or trying to rain on any parade, but i will lol. Just kidding. I have a friend that bit the bullet and.....wow!! They are just plain terrible 😢. God almighty they are bad. And i promise i wanted to LOVE them. I didnt want to listen to Erin, i wanted him to be wrong. But he was not. They are nothing but bass with a hint of a tweeter in there somewhere. Completely non coherent, bass is INSANELY slow, zero attack. No feeling at all. The mids dont exist and if you, even in the slightest, like a nice airy or lightness to your sound, youll be severely disappointed. Did i mention i wanted to love them??? Cause i did. The soundstage width is about a 4/10 and the height is 0/10. Truly. Its just a muddled mess of whatnot. Im so sorry sir, i do not in any way mean to inpede your work in any way. I love your channel and your reviews (btw, gotta review the B&W 606 S3 😊) and im almost always onboard with you. Your quad s2 review was dead on perfect. Wharfdale evo 4.2......amazing review, etc. But this one i just have to respectfully disagree. Maybe if they cost like $350-$400 then i can possibly warrant the purchase, wait; I actually can't. There are many good used speakers for that price that can take the Opals out back and beat em like a rented mule. So that's just my (and my buddys) take on the Opal 1. But to each their own. And before anyone asks, yes they were powered more than adequately. I used my Anthem Integrated 225, a Nuprime ida 16, a B&K Reference 125.2 s2. And my friends Krell. So it was not that. I really wish i loved them. I wanted to. But not to be. I really appreciate your review and respect your opinion a lot. Its just that i think to myself: for $800 I can get these or a like new pair of Bowers and Wilkins 606 S3's, and i say " Wow!!! How is that even possible when the B&W destroys the Opals in every way known to mankind. Or even a used pair of something like the Dali Ikon 2 MK2's. Another speaker that makes the Opals its prison wife. Anyway, happy listening 😊
