The worst part about the Buu Saga is that it makes you wonder what could've happened if the Great Saiyaman Saga was actually allowed to develop, and if Gohan was allowed to actually develop as a character instead of shrinking back under Goku's shadow.

Man, Shin really went from most mysterious/cool character to the biggest joke in DBZ/S history. They hyped him up all tournament just for him to be absolutely worthless.
He and Kibito became so insignificant so quick that they just resorted to them being examples for the Potara Fusion idea so that they can have one useless character instead of two. LOL.

In defense of Piccolo forfeiting to Shin, keep in mind he's 1/3 Kami now. Kami was scared shitless of King Yemma, who outranks him in the Heavenly Pecking Order. Shin outranks EVERYONE in the Heavenly Pecking Order. I think status and respect had more to do with him forfeiting than anything. It'd be like the Pope refusing to fight GOD.
Thing is, with Yemma and Kami, we can tell that there's a power gap right away with Yemma being able to reign in Raditz's soul, where Kami is likely still at the same power level he was at when he lost to Piccolo Jr. back in Dragon Ball. Meanwhile, Shin was worried about even fighting Pui Pui, who's top feat was having his planet have 10x Earth's normal gravity, a feat that was surpassed by even the Earthlings before the crew even got to Namek. Hell, we see Kid Trunks able to move at 150x Earth's gravity without needing to go super saiyan, meaning even Goten and Trunks could likely outclass Shin in a fight if we are to take his fears about Pui Pui seriously.
This is the kind of crap that he should really be paying attention to, instead of blaming the story for his lack of attention. The Supreme Kai which even shocked Goku for a bit when he heard about him.
Mr. Satan befriending Buu and legitimately saving the Earth without having to fight is the best thing about the saga and one of Dragon Ball's best story moments overall. It's just too bad they had to undo it immediately for more fighting and fusion spamming for another 50 episodes. At least we got to see Mr. Satan beat the crap out of Van Zant, that was fun too.
@@jao4298 I think when SSJ3 Goku fought Buu, he actually would've had a harder time with him than he thought. It would take most of his strength to kill off Fat Buu because of his extraordinary regeneration skills. Fat Buu looked like he was having the time of his life in that fight. We all know how incredibly powerful energy attacks are that are infused with life energy. Tien's Tri-beam attack, for example, on Cell. It stalled him and Tien is literally a few thousand times weaker than Cell, lol. If Majin Vegeta's all-out sacrificing attack with his life energy doesn't harm Fat Buu, then how do you think SSJ3 Goku is going to fare against him?
My personal issue was they just made him another Cell.. could have been and pretty much WAS beaten at several points, but OP regeneration drags it out.. Most enemies before Cell and Buu were made to feel extremely powerful, not just hard to kill.
I disagree that Cell doesn't feel extremely powerful, Cell was capable of destroying the entire solar system with his kamehameha against Gohan. And I don't mean just because he said so, you can feel the immense power of his ki. And Cell demolishing Androids 16 and 17 also show how powerful he is. As for Buu, it is true that we never see anything that demonstrates he is leagues beyond Cell and Frieza in power. All we really get is him beating the shit out of Gotenks, Goku and Vegeta, screaming dimensional holes and breaking reality by raging as Buuhan. Lame...🙄

Kid Buu pushing the spirit bomb back to Goku, blowing up the Earth with a single blast, Piccolo pooping his pants when Super Buu approached him, beating the crap out of Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta and going toe to toe with Super Saiyan 3 Goku were just a few examples of how Majin Buu was leagues above Frieza and Cell. Cell on the other hand never felt extremely powerful. He had to hide from Piccolo and the rest of the Z fighters to steal more power, Vegeta and Trunks made a beating out of him. Even Goku vs Cell fight didnt seem Cell was that strong until he admitted he wasn't using his full power.

Furthermore, Piccolo shat his pants over how powerful Frieza was after he transformed into his final form and when he felt Imperfect Cell's superior ki after absorbing all those people. So what if Piccolo was terrified of Majin Buu when he's been terrified many times before. And as for blowing up the Earth, really dude? Frieza and Cell could do that effortlessly with a finger as well. That isn't remotely powerful by the Buu saga.

He may have survived it but it took a big toll on him and that spirit bomb was not as powerful as the one against Buu. With Gohan, that was a baby spirit bomb, nothing like the one against kid Buu, kid Buu would have ate that like candy. As for piccolo pooping his pants, he still tried to fight Frieza in his final form and powered up imperfect cell. With Super Buu, he didn't even try because he knew how over powered he was. He was so outmatched that he allowed buu to kill off the human population to give gotenks more time to train. That's how terrifying and powerful Buu was. You're right that Frieza and cell can blow up planets as well. My point is that kid Buu was able to do it without breaking a sweat and the z fighters were unable to stop him while Frieza and cell had to power up to do it and were unsuccessful because of the z fighters.

As for the spirit bomb, Goku drew energy from multiple planets for the spirit bomb on Namek, while the spirit bomb against Kid Buu was only from the people of Earth. Not too impressive. And let's be honest, for a villain as horrifyingly powerful and dangerous as Kid Buu, killing him with the spirit bomb felt underwhelming. I mean, you really expect me to believe the same technique that failed twice against weaker villains would suddenly work on the strongest villain who is leagues beyond them? I call bullshit on that convenient plot device. Even Goku thought using a spirit bomb was a joke when Vegeta suggested it. I suggest you read the manga because Piccolo openly and angrily admits how hopeless they all were against final form Frieza, even though he tried to fight anyway. Plus, Piccolo is so outclassed by the Saiyans by the Buu saga, that Super Buu intimidating him says nothing about Buu's power. Think about it: what can Piccolo's reaction to Buu tell us when Vegeta would wipe the floor with Piccolo and he got demolished by fat buu? If anything, you could argue Goku admitting he had no chance to beat super buu, even in ssj3 was convincing proof of Buu's power.
The total burial of Piccolo is absolutely unforgivable. Shitting his pants against Shin, getting turned into stone in a matter of seconds, being a laughing stock teacher for the kids. Losing all ground to the sayans. Even Cell acknowledged at the Cell Games that Piccolo is on a level with Vegeta and Trunks, and is also the only one who holds is own against the Cell Jrs... and then 7 years later THIS? Can we just appreciate that Mr Satan technically played a vital role in saving the world...twice. Without him throwing Android 16s head to Gohan,Gohan might have never transformed into SSj2,and by befriending Fat Buu he probably helped in defeating Kid Buu later on.Both events also show that despite him knowing(atleast after Cell pinched him into a mountain) how weak he is compared to the threats the DragonBall World has,he still chooses to put himself at risk

Always did found it strange how Gotenks acted during the entire arc. How would Trunks react knowing his mom died? His personality would make him not accept it, and fight back. Goten is innocent as Kid Goku. His dad left, he believed he lost his older brother, and lost his mother. You would expect him to have an outrageous moment similar to Gohan. Gotenks? He could give less of a flying heck, if that means he can show boat how “strong.” He is. Then I see Vegito, and go “is this just a fusion thing?” Then Go back to Gotenks and realize their personality do not match. Maybe trunks, but at least have Goten’s kindness be more effective on how serious the situation is.
"Why did Buu let them fuse?" Remember he wanted to fight a strong opponent and wanted to see if Gotenks could be a good warm up (Super Buu revealed he knew about Gohan all along saying he was the fighter he wanted to face all along)

My main gripe witb the Buu saga is the antagonist's motivations. Vegeta wanted the Dragon Balls to achieve immortality. Frieza wanted the Dragon Balls to achieve immortality. Cell wanted to achieve perfection and test his perfection against the strongest warrior. Buu wanted... WTF did Buu want?
Depends on what Buu you are talking about. I suppose it depends on the beings that he has absorbed as they tend to influence his wants and desires. The completely undiluted Kid Buu doesn't want anything other than to kill and destroy. Majin Buu wants chocolate and to play with his dog.

50:54 Honestly, I never had any problem with that at all. Buu absorbs people when he covers them with the pink goo. But when he turns them into candy, then it's like they're actual candy. It makes perfect sense: Never did Buu get a new wardrobe after eating candy, just after absorbing them & putting them in those weird cocoon things.
I loved the Buu Saga. It introduced some of the best concepts of the series, badass transformations and fights. The only unforgivable part was the new transformation logic, which was blatantly not thought out at all. SSJ is something Vegeta almost died training to achieve, but the kids did it literally with no effort 😂

I can excuse the problems with majin vegeta because it brought us some of the best ENG dub acting in anime history. Chris Sabat’s finest, amazing delivery. “I PUSHED MYSELF TO THE EDGE OF MY LIMITS AND BEYOND, YET NO AMOUNT OF TRAINING COULD CLOSE THE GAP BETWEEN US…”
Although I agree on the fact that the Buu saga is very messy and all that, I’d like to counter on a major point: Goku’s development throughout Dragon Ball, and it apparently being betrayed at the end of the Buu saga. First of all, Goku didn’t learn mercy from King Kai. He always was merciful, in the sense that he always had respect for life and the world around him, thanks to his upbringing with old Gohan. A turning point was his training with Kami, where he grew older and wiser in more ways than one, and this is where we get the Goku that is willing to spare Piccolo, Vegeta and even Frieza, because the child-like ferocity he fought with as a child has been mitigated. Where once he wouldn’t have stopped to think “hey, I’m taking a life here”, now he does, and won’t go through with it if he deems it not necessary. Then come the Androids. First things first, the theme of the Androids saga is not that violence/fighting isn’t the answer. The theme is that a parent must see his child as a separate individual and not project his own shadow over him. I mean, who’s the villain who starts it all? Dr. Gero, a degenerate “father” who literally programs his children/creatures with HIS life purpose imprinted in their brains. When you think about it, it’s pretty straightforward. Cell, Gero’s ultimate “child”, a Frankenstein monster with no soul, made up by the good doctor with literal pieces of other individuals, is defeated by a father (Goku) loving and trusting his son fully, and by another father (Vegeta) setting his pride aside to avenge his fallen son, having finally realized that he loved Trunks for who he was, not just as an extension of himself. The theme is parenthood. If the Frieza saga had made Goku into a complete warrior, the Cell saga has made him into a complete father. Which leads me to the Buu saga. Unlike Frieza, who is pure arrogance and cruelty, and Cell, who is pure “falsity”, pure lack of individuality and soul, Majin Buu is pure lack of wisdom, education and experience. Something all his forms have in common, something that defines Buu’s character as a whole, is his extreme naivety. Even when he grows more sophisticated through absorbing people, that is just experience he stole from others, he didn’t earn anything. Imagine what Goku could have turned into if he still had his post-amnesia purity of heart, but NO ONE to guide him. That is Buu. Which is why now, indeed, “violence is not the answer” is the theme of the story. Buu is momentarily put down through force, yes (and even then by the Genkidama, a symbol of love and hope), but Goku goes out of his way to ask that he gets a second chance, because he understands this isn’t a complete monster, it’s just a clueless child who didn’t know any better. A child who could very much have been him, without his friends, family and mentors by his side. And so, Dragon Ball concludes with Goku putting all the qualities he learned during his long journey to the best use: giving Buu the chance no one ever gave him in his previous life, giving that clueless child a chance to grow up. I don’t think our hero’s characterization is betrayed in any way, and hell, I think this ending is nothing short of beautiful. Sorry for the long comment😅 (and as for why Goku left his children, dude, they grew up, Gohan’s not 4 anymore😂)
Not true. The only problem with the Buu saga is that we weren't told from the beginning that Buu has forms (Evil and Pure). If Kaioshin in episode 233 said that Buu has 2 more forms in his arsenal, then everything would be in order.
i agree completely with your analysis, but still for me goku setting aside his family, which he has for the longest time neglected feels a little off, even if everything else checks out i dont like it as an ending
Damn straight. I’d watch an entire side series of Gohan going to school and fighting crime as an anonymous superhero. Too bad the ark goes down the crapper with the tournament and it only gets worse and worse. The second evil Buu appears I just skip the rest until AT LEAST Kid Buu.
The whole Kabito having Gohan powered up was literally answered in the show. They literally made a point to explain that Shin didn’t know where Babadi’s ship and Majin Buu were, so they used Gohan to bait them to take energy to allow Shin to follow them to the base.
I think the point, moreso, was that, if they *needed* Gohan's energy, *why* did they let him get drained? They were confident Gohan was the target, and if someone else could've sufficed, then it would be odd for them to have this whole plan anyway. So I end up agreeing with this point: if Shin weren't braindead, he could've found Babidi another way and/or could've warned Gohan and company against letting it happen. If he really believed that the threat was that real, and really believed the Z fighters were that strong, then his plan doesn't really make sense. It's an idiot plot for sure, though I almost give Toriyama credit for that one as Shin really is an idiot.
@@connorrichard9851 Uhhh isn't the entire point of Goku/Vegeta/Gohan entering babidi's ship is to show that Shin was under the impression that saiyans are strong, but not nearly as strong as he thought. They were confident about gohan being a target because during cell saga he showed yuge power and hey, if they heal him, they will have a powerful fighter to help them stop babidi anyways. Not sure what other way he could have found babidi's ship. If Shin warned gohan then what? If they fight back against the 2 weaklings then they will very doubtfully just return to babidi, they still need the energy. If Gohan doesn't fight back, then there is pretty much no difference between what happend and what would happen now.

If Shin's head wasn't shoved too far up his own ass, he could have just appealed to the z fighters for help, and the dragon balls could have been gathered in like, what, 10 minutes? The only reason this didn't happen is because Shin, for no good reason, thought this one specific plan was definitely the best and only option.
Looking back at the Buu Saga, yeah it's not great, but it has it's moments. Good Buu is definitely one of the best villains in the Dragon World. His childlike nature and creative powers makes him very unique and fun. And his time with Mr. Satan is just amazing!
11:18 it's later explained that the Kaioshin and Kabito let Gohan's energy be stolen so they could then follow Yamu and Spopovich to Babadi's ship, which is hidden underground. Plus you got the Videl sensu bean scene in the wrong spot, it happens before his fight with kabito. 15:11 Kaioshin couldn't have thrown a meteor at Babadi's spaceship as he wasn't around when it touched down on Earth Generally it's better to use the manga as the thing you're critiquing compared to the anime, as it's the most accurate to the author's original intentions (so filler bits like that cell games recap movie or Dabura saying piccolo isn't "a real demon" aren't present in the manga) 21:55 Kaioshin asking Vegeta why is, again, anime filler and not in the manga. Also, while Goku technically never beat Vegeta in a 1v1 fight, he did surpass him in strength many times in the series, using his acts as Majin Vegeta to show that he's not a good guy isn't really accurate because him blowing up the bleachers is to show that he's bad now, and Goku *did* spare his life way back in the saiyan arc. And in the manga, his speech for hating Goku isn't really a speech but just a few speech bubbles, so pinning this on Toriyama isn't accurate either (the Goku v Vegeta fight is much shorter in the manga and doesn't contain Vegeta's speech for hating Goku there either.) 24:24 I'd argue Goku's transformation doesn't symbolize that some people can't be saved, as even after achieving the transformation, he still tried to spare Frieza. Plus Vegeta and Gohan's super Saiyan one transformations happened off screen in the manga, but I guess they could still symbolize the things you mentioned. 25:40 Yes, the point of this fight is to further characterize Vegeta as evil now, but comparing it to their first fight doesn't work because since then Vegeta has developed as a character. That's why he entered the tournament and decided to train Uub in the first place, to meet Uub and get the chance to fight someone strong. It *is* dumb that Goku left his friends and family so suddenly to train Uub but Uub isn't a complete stranger. Great video though, the Buu saga is definitely the weakest part of the original series. For me it's that way because of the plot holes, dropped plot points, miss used characters, etc. and you could really tell that at this point Toriyama was running on fumes. But I think if you don't think too hard about it it can still be enjoyable to read through. I tried to correct any facts that you got wrong but I largely agreed with a good chunk of your points. Really well edited and really entertaining video :)
This desperately needs to be top comment. Most of this guys arguments are “it’s bad because it is” without further explanation and simply doesn’t pay attention to key details of the plot and uses that as criticisms. This is up there with one of the worst analysis videos and you did a great job revealing most of not all of the holes in his “argument” as to why the buu saga sucks.
What really did for me was when Goku messes with the planet, destroying the environment and almost earth to turn super sayian 3, and then he says “I’m a man of curiosity” like wtf does that even mean.
Eh, there was no danger. Earth shaked for like 30 seconds while he was transforming. That's all the anime did add extra shit, but it does that all the time lol
There were millions dead at that point he was doing everything to stall Majin buu so trunks can find the dragon radar and wish everybody back to life. Piccolo told buu to.kill everyone on earth just to buy time for gotenks. Because they're going to fix everything with the dragon balls once they kill buu

Buu’s absorption technique is different then turning people into food cause even Goku mentions it before they fused into Vegito the fact that when Buu uses his body gum and captures his victims he gains their powers but with the chocolate beam they just turn to food he doesn’t gonna any power from them and then they die that’s why everyone at the lookout isn’t there in Buu’s body

I agree that buu saga is worse than cell and frieza but I still have a few problems with this vid, it was obvious goku wanted to fight vegeta, like you said goku fights for his friends, he really doesn’t have to go all out against vegeta, it’s clear he was wanting a fair fight, not to mention it could’ve helped vegeta knowing that him and goku are equal in strength (because he doesn’t know goku has ssj3) which is the whole reason he became majin. For instant transmission to work you have to sense ki, goku couldn’t sense Dr briefs ki from that far away, and so sending trunks isn’t really a problem for me, and goku stayed dead in other world because he felt wherever he is, there is evil, Goku isn’t just gonna stop training, and other world has planets which are 10X normal gravity and stated many times by vegeta that saiyans have no limit to their potential, so the saiyans having all these transformations makes sense, super saiyan 3 as a transformation does look cool although I agree it doesn’t have much depth, other than nature vs nurture purposes which was established in the first super saiyan transformation, another thing I want to mention is that dragon ball characters can lower their ki to make it possible for others to not sense them, although never explained the only logical explanation is that babidi, dabora etc lowered their ki to make the Z fighters not sense them, It makes sense since babidi were sending out fodder to gather ki, another thing I wanted to add is that spopo absorbing gohans ki isn’t a problem to me since we saw the androids like dr gero and Android 19 absorb ki from goku in the prior arcs, as for goku vs fat buu, the whole point of that was not only to stall for trunks but also for buu to disobey babidi, goku has a chat with buu telling buu that he’s much stronger than babidi and doesn’t need to obey everything he says
It's not obvious that Goku wanted a fair fight against Majin Vegeta, when he specifically said that he wanted to end the fight as quickly as possible/at full power in order to avoid getting hurt and transferring that damage energy to Buu's shell. On top of that, he said this while they were both still in SSJ1, then he transformed to SSJ2 and was surprised after Vegeta also transformed. And prior to this scene, there was no indication that Goku knew that Vegeta had ascended past SSJ1. If Goku's explicitly stated top priority was preventing Buu's revival at full power, then why would he arbitrarily limit himself to a fair fight, which would increase his chances of reviving Buu at full power? That doesn't make sense. Also, Goku specifically told Krillin and Piccolo that he couldn't beat Buu alone because he and Vegeta were equal in strength, and Vegeta couldn't do it. No mention of having another transformation in his pocket, and he states that he intended to fuse with Vegeta before the kids ever came up as a suggestion. So prior to its introduction, there was no indication that SSJ3 existed, or that he didn't use it because he wanted to make Vegeta feel at any type of ease during their fight. When Vegeta came back and accused Goku of hiding SSJ3 from him during their fight, Goku justified it by saying he was saving it for later, "just in case," but he never specified what he was saving it for. He didn't say anything about appeasing Vegeta or wanting a fair fight. It couldn't have been for Buu either, since he specifically indicated to his friends that FUSION is what he was saving for Buu, and didn't mention SSJ3 to them at all. And why would he save it later for Buu when Buu hadn't even been revived yet? Goku explicitly wanted to avoid giving Buu more energy in the first place, so it makes no sense for him to not use a transformation that would prevent him from taking damage from Vegeta.

I don't know in my opinion buu saga was a lot of fun.The villain was fun but also very threatening if needed ( destroying earth ,killing all humans ,killing chichi and so on). The arc also expanded the universe with the Supreme kais and introduced ss3 with in my opinion most badass transformation
Hey so, what do you get when you combine two kids? They will make wacky bullcrap attacks. I understand the oddity of apathy Gotenks has, but in terms of creativity with attacks I understand the whole deal with Gotenks's arsenal. Believable abilities huh? Monster Carrot, General Blue, Tien, and even Goku have some things to say about that. Piccolo isn't the first or last to have character assassination. Yamcha comes to mind, as apparently he cheated and Bulma broke up with him. Bulma was the one to find other characters hot all throughout classic Dragonball even with Yamcha as her boyfriend. Trunks only becomes Vegeta's son due to Saiyans being the most relevant at the time. Yamcha might not have been the best fighter in the lineup, but he was a good character. He got over his fear of girls through his relationship with Bulma, and Toriyama only changed it to being shy with everyone else except Bulma (which is never seen in the Manga at all, nor with interaction with older ChiChi, RanFan, or even filler all throughout OG Dragonball. Yes, Trunks is beloved and is truly unforgettable, but Toriyama could have easily made humans have transformations or at least improve their techniques to allow them to keep up. Toriyama didn't even use Chiaotzu, a literal Psychic before Guldo, at all. Tell me this honestly, if Tien could learn the scale breaking Kikoho at a power level of 180, and Chiaotzu, Tien, and Taopaipai have the Dodonpa which is stronger than the Kamehameha, how is it that Chiaotzu couldn't know the Kikoho/Tri Beam as well? Krillin was relevant due to being a strategist, Tien never stops training unlike what Yamcha and Krillin did. Chiaotzu may have stopped training but we don't know when. The power scaling was breaking since Frieza, yet the waste of actually prevalent characters in OG Dragonball is frustrating as a whole. I didn't even mention Launch/Lunch. Toriyama forgot her in Z all except like one line about her following Tien around in the first episode of the Z portion. Literally everyone else from OG Dragonball was in Z except her in the Manga. I adore Piccolo and agree with what you are saying, I just feel like because Americans only saw Z for the most part, they didn't get how many issues Toriyama really has with writing in general and doesn't get the full picture for why lost relevance of characters in Dragonball ticks me off majorly.

@@veryangryboi4128 Well, it isn't just that Launch was a gag character that made me upset. Dragonball in the early stages had fighting as the secondary charm before Z, so Launch wasn't as much of a bother. If she was kept though, I think her attitude could have had potential as a fighter at least for her violent, blonde side. Fan stuff already makes it so. But yeah, Yamcha seriously never struck me as a cheater, but Bulma does seem like the paranoid type. Granted, the white lie Yamcha pulled with Chichi I would agree would rub me the wrong way if it was said to me, so I do get how Bulma may have broken off with Yamcha, but it was whiplash to go straight to Vegeta (in the Manga we got no possible bonding shown). Granted, Vegeta and Yamcha both weren't exactly pinnacles of morality when Bulma hooked up with them, and I can't really say it was clever of Bulma to immediately want to bone Zarbon and then 180 once he transformed against Vegeta the second time, either. Chiaotzu would have had potential if Toriyama gave a shiz or even tried in general with any throwaway characters. Toriyama isn't lazy, to be fair. Dragonball wasn't and isn't the only project he dealt with throughout his career. Dragon quest, Sandland, and a ton of other stuff he worked on and works on today simultaneously. What it sacrifices is a decent bit of quality control, plus his pantser writing style did at least help him keep up with the due dates for Shonen Jump among the video game concept art and other stuff. I mean, Toriyama did forget Taopaipai too, but the anime did give us glimpses of Launch and Tao in filler. I did also like the Giras and Nam filler, and some of the filler here and there in Dragonball as a whole. Not that it is needed, nor a pinnacle of story, but it gave characterization where there might have needed to be. Maybe I am going over the same stuff or something, I can't tell on my phone while typing and have a bad attention span to try and remember what I do type. Kinda like Toriyama, except without an excuse of being busy most of the time lol.

I agree with all of this. The buu saga starts decent, gets strong, then becomes a nightmare of bad writing choices. I do have to add that I'm pretty sure the Hyperbolic time chamber (I'm a filthy dubs boi) only allows 2 people because there aren't enough supplies to last a year for more than 2 people. Not sure if the japanese says the same, but Piccolo doesn't have to eat, so it wouldn't apply to him. Or it's just bad writing again.
I was under the impression that the "only two people can be in the room " rule was made up by Goku on the spot , just to let future Trunks spend some time with his father or maybe it's just that time dilation stops working with more people inside.
My introduction to DBZ was the Super Buu arc. Until I watched the TFS dub, I utterly loathed the franchise and thought it was hot garbage, but in the end I watched Kai and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I could never put this into words, but I agree with you completely. You covered most of the plot points and even some minor details and nuance of the writing. The story very heavy, *VERY* convoluted and so, so, so much time wasted because there was no *reason* for things to happen.
Spopovich didn't suffer food poisoning when he fought Satan. The only allusion to food poisoning regarding Satan was from a Q&A detailing the time when he became world-champion, saying his unnamed rival got it which was good luck. But I don't think that was Spopovich.

It sells Trunks short to say that he won against Goten by cheating, though. Trunks was about to win against Goten fairly at first by grabbing him (like you even showed in the video), but then Goten gets out of that by cheating. And then Trunks cheats back to get the win that he would have had had earlier if Goten had not cheated. So Trunks still won fair and square, but after that he also won in a match where they both cheat.

It was actually Gohan's childhood dream to grow up to become a scholar. It was never pushed on to him by Chichi at all 🧐. In the manga character introduction Gohan himself says that he wants to grow up to become a scholar, after he stated his age.

While I generally agree with the general premise, it was kinda explained that "Shin" allowed Gohan to get sucked so that they could find Babidi's base to begin with -so taking out Spopovitch was not the point. Also, neither Cell or Frieza were universal threats -the latter was planetary and only "occasionally" did mass genocide while the former only had enough power to destroy a Solar System in one go. So its understandable why Shin didn't get rid of either. As for sensing stuff; it's astonishingly inconsistent in Dragon Ball in general. Sometimes people can sense things from space, other times they can barely sense powerful foes near them. Maybe it can be explained away with most characters deliberately suppressing their power unless they're in a fight but it was never actually explained. So yeah.
also it was never stated that shin's job is to physically protect the universe just create life. He literally went after buu because of his personal history with buu

The buu arc definitely has some issues but it feels like there are a ton of nitpicks about things that are even explained later in the arc. Goku says that he was strong enough to kill Buu when he went SS3 but wanted the boys to do it since he wasn’t around anymore. He had trunks get the radar and fought buu because he figured buu would want to wait for a strong fight and that he’d kill Babadi. Goku literally set that up after the fight. This stuff is totally in character for Goku. I.e. Cell and the Senzu bean. He didn’t go SS3 against vegeta for the same reason that you even said. He was trying to talk him down. Multiple times. Goku let him go once before. He wasn’t exactly looking for a death match with him.
@galaxyvulture6649 that's not how Instant transmission works. Goku needs to lock onto somebody. The briefs are about as strong as anybody else in the city. He couldn't parse them out from anybody else in the city, let alone the rest of the world. It's like trying to pick out a tree from a forest while you're in the next town over.
One thing I might say theBuu Saga does "better" than the rest of Z. Is working as more of a traditional kids cartoon like adventure time, steven universe or the like. On that maybe does kind of tell a continuous story, but really it is more just a bunch of adventures stitched together. I grew up not only watching DBZ, but watching a continuous stream of DBZ reruns. And the boo saga in particular is structured in a way in which is kind of fine to just jump in on any given moment. There is so much happening during that saga, so many stories that start and are completely done in a couple of episodes. Like the great saiyaman episodes, the tournament, fighting babidi's minions, majin boo and Mr. Satan becoming friends, the fusion stuff, the other fusion stuff, and all mixed with a lot of comedy to break up the drama, in that regard it feels a bit like the original Dragon Ball. The other sagas have way better story, but if you watch some random episode casually you always feel like you jumped in in the middle of something. I mean no joke, the main frieza fight between frieza and the gang is like 25 episodes. All of them of non-stop continuous tension, no jokes to be had, you just jump into the middle of a very serious fight, including some serious character deaths and the like. I feel this might be a reason why the Boo saga was so beloved while airing... but to modern fans and anime conventions is the lowest point. Because people don't watch dragon ball casually on their tvs anymore. It is not just another show on the TV, it is this legendary anime with the legendary story and the final ark just never reaches that level.
You had me laughing so much my stomach was hurting lmao. Great video and I agree with you on a lot of things. As a kid I viewed Buu like alien virus kinda like vemon and carnage. Beings that exist for one evil purpose but their power relies on the emotion of its hosts. Idk if this canon but growing up I had gameboy advance game of the buu saga and it explained buu's origin. I can't quite reminder all of the details but the gist I do is something like this: At some point kid buu came to exist and he was just a danger to the universe bc he was so evil that the kais had to stop. They tried but one by one kid buu beat them; however the leader of the kais (the chunky one) sacrificed himself and let buu absorb him (so i think he always had that ability). Once he did that the kais kidness changed buu - into the chunky or good buu - and therefore weaken him enough that the other kais were able to seal him in the sphere. I thought was pretty cool and at the time made sense why he changed so much as he absorbed everyone. And only until goku and vegeta release eveyone from his within does kid buu reappear. Idk, I thought that was pretty cool lmao.
Feel like it would be incredibly dumb for goku to still only be a super saiyan in buu saga. He's been training only, nonstop for years now. He should be the strongest.
11:30 "Why get any of the Z fighters involved?" I thought the whole point of Shin and Kibito making Gohan power up is they WANTED Spopovich and Yamu to steal his energy. They were trying to track down Babidi, and knew that if they succeeded they would return to him and they could follow. Of course they could easily kill those two but that doesn't help them find Babidi. Mind you, I watched it a long time ago but this criticism feels weird.
They're operating under the assumption that these guys DEFINITELY know where to find this ship. Why not just catch them, and read their minds? GOKU can fucking do that, a couple GODS can't though? Goku didn't even LEARN how to read minds, he just pulled it out of his ass when he got to Namek! Fuck any of that though, why not just retrieve the dragon balls? Make a WISH to be teleported directly in front of Babidi then blast him! He's SUPER weak! Or just have Shenron teleport Buu's pod INTO THE SUN or across the other side of the UNIVERSE or to a specific spot where they can imprison him more permanently!? OR HOW ABOUT USE SOME KIND OF GOD ABILITIES LIKE KING KAI'S ABILITY TO TALK TO AND FIND ANYONE IN THE GALAXY AND JUST *LOOK FOR THEM*!? THERE ARE REALLY NO OPTIONS BUT TO GIVE THE ENEMY EXACTLY WHAT THEY NEED AND RISK HELPING THEM!? WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU DO!? And once again, they don't do ANYTHING when the fate of the universe is at stake, letting everyone fight one on one despite SUPPOSEDLY being stronger than CELL, so incredibly powerful Piccolo was like "Nah fuck that, you'd destroy me easily I give up" which I don't believe Shin is stronger than fucking KRILLIN to be perfectly honest, they do so little in the series as a whole. Super makes this so much worse, cause there's KNOWN entities that could throw Buu aside with NO effort. Beerus is a cat and is asleep so they can't ask him, sure, but surely they could go to Whis and be like "Hey this pure entity of destruction is just killing EVERYTHING, the universe will literally be empty before Beerus wakes up, can you come with us and kill him? It'll be like 10 seconds tops, we will give you ANYTHING you ask for." Like if the supreme Kai dies, SO DOES BEERUS, so he'd be invested in stopping Buu as well!

I love how every arch, the next big bad guy is some how always as strong or stronger than the last one. The good guys train, and just barely somehow manage to defeat him. Next season, prince and repeat. It just got old really quick.

The theory with Goten being able to go ssj so young compared to Gohan is that Goten was born after Goku achieved ssj, Gohan was not. It's almost like Gohan was the beneficiary of the stronger plant strain, which is congruent with the vegetable theme of the Saiyan race.
I will always say that gohan should had been the one to go majjin not vegeta. Gohan rage got goku killed, his father made the choice to stay dead and when he came back for a day all vegeta could care about was fighting him. The suppressed rage should had made him easy to control and gave us ether him vs goku or him vs vegeta
Vegeta is an evil person at heart. He's not a good man and likely never will be, especially compared to Goku. He will always be the Punisher to Goku's Thor. Gohan, in every single facet, is opposite to Vegeta. He's pure of heart, is a semi pacifist, and has a strong sense of justice. Gohan is probably one of, if not *the* worst candidate for the Majin power that Babidi could set eyes on. He simply doesn't have evil in his heart. Having a bout of rage and pure, unadulterated fury during the Cell Saga doesn't make Gohan any more evil. He's simply not capable of it.
@@SpaceEmperorGenos I agree with you, except the part where you said Vegeta is evil at heart, and used the Punisher as an example. Vegeta is not evil, he was just raised in an environment of evil people and his pure saiyan genetics cause him to be that way, like for example: Goku was initially an “evil” baby who was supposed to conquer earth, but he hit his head and became pure hearted after being raised by Grandpa Gohan. The Punisher isn’t evil, he’s just a necessary force for Justice, where he will cross the line that people are too afraid to cross, but he has a code, and he follows it. That’s what separates him from people like Red Skull. You see what I mean?
I always felt like the Majin Buu arc was rushed out just to please fans. The ending to the Cell Saga felt like it was perfect. If they wanted to continue on, they should have just written Goku out after that and let Gohan shine even brighter as a natural progression of the story. Goku handed Gohan the mantle of Earth's Mightiest Warrior down and now Gohan has to balance his desire to become a Polymath with that of his Saiyan nature of fighting. Expanding the Buu subarcs out of the Great Saiyaman subarc and the Tournament subarc with Gohan in Goku's spot would have been much different and probably a bit more satisfying to watch.
The sad part is I only remember the parts of the Buu Saga that made me think it was good till you reminded me why it's really not. Which is Fat buu and Vegeta. How ever I like Vegeta every time he does Geta stuff so that doesn't really count.

Things i like in Majin Buu Arc Reintroduction of magic (sorta): Magic in Dragon ball Z was kinda lacking, it's good seeing others using magic and not ki things, Dabura spit is actually cool, Babidi magics are cool it's a good element and Dabura is a cool character tho Majin Vegeta: It always thought weird to me that Vegeta turned less evil in Cell because he barely cared for Bulma (on screen) and actually ignored his son wishes to kill Cell and having Majin Vegeta it's a sign that in the end he is not good as we thought Mr Satan interacting with Buu: It was wholesome and gave more character to Satan than being "I am a liar that takes the credit kinda character" and it's cute how Majin Buu evil is basically "Other tell me what to do so I must follow them" which is kinda a nice explanation
Okay, I love your analysis of the themes of Dragon Ball z at the end of video… up to the Cell saga. I think you missed the point of the Boo saga and its themes, and here’s why: You are right that Goku learns in the saiyan saga to forgive others, then Freeza teaches him that not everyone deserves mercy, then your analysis of Cell is perfect also! Goku tries to give the fight to Gohan, and Gohan’s nature just isn’t like that, so Goku has to sacrifice himself and learn that not everyone loves to fight like he does. Here’s the thing: Goku has a RESPONSIBILITY to earth. He is the strongest under the heavens, it is his responsibility to protect his friends and family, and after Cell, HE NEGLECTS this responsibility. The Boo saga fundamentally is Goku trying to reconcile that he has abandoned his responsibility for 7 years. Goku left it unattended, and needs to solve that issue with himself. He is trying to pass the responsibility on to a successor. The lessons of the Boo saga go with the mini-arcs. He can’t count of Vegeta, Vegeta has other responsibilities. Gohan is not Goku’s successor, because Gohan doesn’t love to fight the way Goku does. He tries to step down to let the next generation- Goten and Trunks take on the threat. Thats the point of Goku using SSJ3, he isn’t trying to beat Boo, he is showing the boys how to fight and use SSJ3. The problem with them is that they are too inexperienced and young and arrogant to handle the threat. When Goku fights Pure Boo, he realizes they are parallel. You said yourself, Kid Boo just LOVES to hurt people. Goku recognizes that Boo at his core is someone who just loves to fight, the only problem is that he is evil. When Goku defeats him, his last wish is for someone that can understand him. He wishes for a person like Boo, with a pure heart, and the power to take on the responsibility that Goku holds. In the end, he passes the torch to his successor that the God’s granted him. Thats why I like the Boo arc in it’s themes. Its very well done in handling Goku’s legacy.
i kinda agree, as time has gone one i've really started to loathe this video. which has been hard for me because its the thing im known for. if you look at it that way, with goku finally finding someone like him, then i think its an okay if rushed conclusion. the point i was trying to make is how the buu saga effectively conveys the message that the new generation, the gotenks, the gohan's, the videl's. are weak and powerless the story reverts back to goku, after promising us gohan. the overlying theme becomes about how the way of the older generation is right. at least thats what i was trying to say i made that video when i was like 17 lol

Its been forever since I’ve watched it and I laughed because I forgot about the part where they literally just sit and wait for a while while Gotenks is in the room of spirit and time. Also I see your point that this is where Dragon Ball essentially became “The Goku and Vegeta show”, because it is true that the side characters all don’t do much in Super at all. The characters assassination of Piccolo was hard to watch, and I’m super glad that the new movie gave him back the spotlight!
the buu saga had amazing ideas and some of the best moments in the series but the writing and overall execution could've been sooo much better. i wouldn't say it sucks but it is a frustrating arc cuz it had so much more potential. and as a vegeta fan the arc is painful towards the end lol similar thing is happening with a lot of the super arcs too, great ideas but meh execution.
Buu's eyes turning red was done to correct a design error on Buu. Since the manga is in black and white, the animation staff had to guess on a few things. It's similar to what happened with Vegeta at the start of Z. For those early episodes his hair was red, his armor was green, and his gloves and boots were orange. As for Buu, his eyes were believed to be white, and the inside of his mouth was red; when in reality his eyes are red and the inside of his mouth was blue. At least with Vegeta there were a few episodes in between the first design and the correct design. It's subtle enough that people can forget the first design even existed. But with Buu the change is extremely sudden and feels jarring. Everyone notices it because of how obvious it is.
Ok, you made some good points, but the constant F-bombs and your overextended demonstration of your exasperation of the Gotenks arc were so annoying that I had to shut it off. Ironically, it was more annoying than what you were complaining about.
About your gripes What Buu is made of is magical, and magic in DB = *I CAN DO WHATEVER THE FRICK I WANT*. This explains why Buu can tear open dimensional rifts. The same is probably true for Metamoran fusion. Buu can also choose who he wants to make part of him. Buu also really, really wanted to eat candy (as shown in the Dub) I also actually like the Galactic Donuts and Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack. Gotenks is also his own character (probably) and is separate from Goten and Trunks. That or just bad writing. As for Piccolo's Character Assassination, DB was slowly becoming the *Super Saiyan Show* And as for Gohan, MAYBE THE RITUAL HAD A HIDDEN SIDE EFFECT? Buutenks has Gotenks in him, ergo, Buu turned himself in a cocky little shift The Kai are Gods they can do whatever they fricken want, like later on in Super, Angels Shin was the only Kai left and there needs to be a Supreme Kai, The live giveaway might not work on other Kais. "Pure" Buu can copy techniques, moving on... Goku personality changes a bit with SSJ3, so him throwing hands makes a little sense. Combined with the fact that everyone thought that Gohan was dead... and that he was told that Buu has anilhilated countless planets. The rest of the Z Fighters don't have the same fighting spirit like their Saiyan allies. DB GT is DB Goku Time DB Super is DB Super
for some reason I thought evil buu was an evil thought that represented everything that fat buu has hated and since he experienced loss like healing mr Satan or the dog, his thought of frustration turned into anger then it created an evil version of himself
I will admit that while the Buu saga is bad. It was my favorite because Majin Buu and Hercule were my favorite characters. Even in Xenoverse I always play as a Majin. I don't care for the other issues with the saga though.
The Goku black arc also pisses me off, they had a perfect opportunity to use Gohan and team him up with future trunks to save his timeline but no he sat aside and didn't even bother to ask trunks wtf was going on, all for it to end up being pointless anyway and trunk leaving in tears knowing he failed.
I have said for so long The Buu saga killed my fandom . I was a massive Gohan fan and watching become useless hurt me to the point of giving up on the show . No one learns anything except vegeta and the whole arc is either character regression or character assassination
The cherry on top of this burnout sundae of a saga for me is the fact that it fails to raise the stakes/tries too hard to inflate the stakes and ends up feeling tacked onto the end haphazardly (and kinda was due to fan demand iirc)
@@bebebebota11 Man, I finished it, but it it was hard. Toriyama was clearly beyond done with that series by that arc and wanted to get back into doing his bread & butter, gag manga, but the powers that be wouldn't let him.
I always thought Goten became strong enough to go Super Saiyan because him and Trunks were play fighting and sparring all the time. I thought that was how both of them powered up. I don’t think the flashback w/ Chichi was in the manga. It was also established that Earthling / Saiyan hybrids were stronger than usual offspring too, right? In my personal head canon ( so take it w/ a grain of salt ) they were conceived after Goku and Vegeta were able to go Super Saiyan, they had the Methodman super sperm so the boys came out extra charged up.
Except the problem is *Future Trunks* doesn't go SSJ anywhere near that early despite having someone training him and the circumstances being much more serious. Hell, Gohan doesn't either, despite having someone to teach it to him. It's just bad writing and Vegeta calling it out doesn't make it less silly. The transformation was supposedly be triggered by strong emotions in dire situations instead of "welp, I'm strong enough somehow, so I can just do it" yet here we are... If Vegeta had taught them how to do it, it'd a different matter, cause one could make a case for Vegeta being a better teacher than Gohan, but that's not how it went down.
@@InfernosReaper I’d have to go back and look for certain but Future Trunks was already a Super Saiyan in the manga when the History of Trunks started, they changed it in the anime to have that powerful moment where he transforms in reaction to Gohan’s death. Originally though, Toriyama had written that he had transformed super young in that timeline too.
@@drewsaga101 compared to Goku and Vegeta, the adults, tweens or whatever is early. I suspect the *real* reason why Gohan didn't go super so young despite having someone to teach him is that Toriyama probably at some point thought it should have *some* kind of requirement before either forgetting or giving up on the idea because he's gotta escalate the power scale in the Buu arc, even though narratively-speaking there's no need to make everyone *that* strong. I'm seriously thinking he was badly burned out by that point.
It is explained why they used Gohan as bait for Spopovich and Yamu, but it’s dumb. It’s because they needed the duo to lead them to where Babidi was. The deity that later is revealed to be able to effortlessly sense people across the entire universe, didn’t know where Babidi was. Oh b-but Babidi’s ship made it so he couldn’t be tracked. :( Cause it makes so much sense that this wizard could just make the Supreme Kai, a literal God, unable to find him. Because….magic or something, it’s never explained. But even ignoring that, they could’ve just gotten Fortuneteller Baba to find him, since she has shown that she can find things even under attempts to prevent detection.

If Super Buu is Evil Buu absorbing Good Buu then when Good Buu is removed, why doesnt it revert to Evil Buu? Why is Pure Buu Super Buu minus Good Buu when Super Buu was only ever just Good and Evil Buu anyway? That's what I never understood.
I thought the saga was well done until SS3 happened and they kinda went overboard with weird shit after that. DBZ has always had weird shit but they did a good job of making it make sense. The last 2/3 of the saga was weird. But the Goku vs Majin Vegeta fight is still one of the coolest in the whole series.
The whole elder kia giving his life to Goku "kinda" makes sense, when you consider that energy sharing techniques have been around since early Sayan saga, and you would think that having the ability to give life SHOULD be something a literal GOD could do " considering there not all that strong compared to universal threats. In all honesty the king kia Would stomp all the other kias eventually, given enough time to charge a spirit bomb.

To be fair super saiyans are just one secret thing, 2 and 3 are furtherings of the form and 4 is more like rapid evolution of base form rather then a super saiyan. Gohan having a solid confidence for a big fight isn't acting like vegeta but i agree it should have been toned down, or something more gogeta where he just is very quick and efficient.
Yes super saiyan 4 is just a super saiyan with tail who can control the great ape power in base form. Thats why broly was pushing vegeta back in his god form
The Gotenks fight with Super Boo was the most frustrating part of this arc because as Piccolo said there were times Gotenks could have finished Super Buu, but wait stall for Gohan. Total BS for sure.
wait gohan is 17 in the buu saga? so he’s 10 in the cell saga?? idk how i never knew this. i always thought he was older especially since he spent a year in the time chamber
the passage of time is kinda iffy but Gohan is like anywhere from 9 to 11 during the cell games. and since buu is 7 years later yeah he's like 17. if you'd like the whole complicated spiel, I could get into it but
@@veryoriginal6790 like I said, the passage of time is iffy. The manga at least says he was 9 by the Cell Games which he could be if u fudged the numbers. The funimation dub said he was 11 which makes a bit more sense. But if u do the math he was more like 10, it's rlly up in the air
