November 9, 2006. Atlantic Air Cargo' Inc. (AAC) at Opa locka Florida is run by the brothers Castrillo. Ernesto (President) and Julio (Vice President). Here you can see their DC-3 the N437GB being prepared for a flight to the Bahamas Including loading and take off.
N437GB ditched to the waters of the Atlantic Ocean while on approach to Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS/MYNN), Nassau, Bahamas Friday 13 years later, October 18, 2019.
The pilot reported that the left engine failed approximately 25-30 nautical miles from Nassau Bahamas. During single engine operation, the aircraft performance was not optimal and the flight was not able to reach Nassau Airport. The decision was made to land the aircraft in the ocean. The airplane submerged and the two pilots onboard were not injured during the incident.
I have to thank the Castrillo brothers for helping me make this video.

These old airplanes just fascinate me. They are such basic, but nevertheless reliable, wonderful machines. I once had the pleasure of flying in one on a flight from Boston's Logan Airport to Provincetown, en route to Cape Cod. I believe it was Provincetown Airways, which also had flights to Florida. The seats were covered in that wonderful wool fabric (no leather or vinyl) and of course, one had to board near the tail and hold on to the seat backs to make it to the front near the cabin. To be expected, it's nearly impossible to carry on a conversation while in flight, because of engine and wind noise. All in all, it was the experience of a lifetime, and I am thankful for it.

That must really be something to see. They have operated several old prop transports out of Opa Locka A/P for several years flying freight to the Caribbean Islands. I’m north of 71 and lived for several years across the street from an Air Force base. This was back in the day when MATS was still operating many propeller transport aircraft. It’s always a treat to see one of these old girls in operation.

As a highly experienced DC-3 pilot from the 1970s, I can see several things about this one. First, it has Pratt & Whitney R-1830 engines instead of the 9 cylinder Wrights, it has a one piece windscreen instead of the 2 piece as most DC-3s had, this one does not have weather radar, as mine did. Also, no deicing boots on the props for the optional anti ice isopropyl alcohol sprayers. Also, there are no deicing boots on the wings and tail. The minimum oil quantity for dispatch was 20 gallons with a max oil quantity of 33 gallons per engine. Just sayin'...

I grew up in Hialeah. I have been going to OPA since the 1970's to see planes. I have never been disappointed. They always seem to have vintage airplanes. Just the other day they had some Antonov 12 that were been dismantled.

That was a sweet video of a D-3 work horse. Eventually they will all have turbo props and the radial engine will be sold to aircraft in need. A radial engine is like an old school Harley Davidson twin. Always tweaking them and they run like a bad out of hell 😊❣️❣️❣️ 🇺🇸 🇨🇱

The DC-3 or C-54 is still in service in some parts of thew world. The square window series used to be the one that transport the executive and leaders of some country after WW-II. It was served as a gunships during Vietnam war and paratrooper transport plane for a long time until it was replaced by C-130.

I was a fuel tech (ramp rat) in the early 70s at Opa locka airport (Hangar One) loved to hear the DC3 crank up, wasn't to happy when we had to roll a 55 gal drum on a dolly out and hand pump oil into the engines. Anybody remember the old Lockheed Constellation ("Connie") that was parked there for years and years it was funded mainly Howard Hughes
