DCS: F-86 Sabre - Bridge Strike || Hunters Over the Yalu Campaign - Mission 3 

It’s not just this dude’s gameplay that’s good, but his production quality for just a single episode is amazing. You don’t see that at all in DCS videos usually, unless it’s cinematic or something.

Practice your bombing while you can, ***SPOILER*** from mission 7 on you'll be transferred to a fighter interceptor squadron ;)

Taking out bridges in North Korea reminds me of the movie "The Bridges at Toko-Ri". I hope your sortie has a better ending.

Who can dislike the music in the prologues of these episodes, lol

The Korean War is so interesting. On the ground you have guys fighting with WW2 era tanks and small arms, while in the sky you have sleek jets duking it out above. Such a huge difference and a really interesting conflict.

Tricky thing about landing the Sabre, you have to come in fast. That’s what the air brakes assist with. Those early jets were tricky to use, meaning if your power drops below ~50% N1, you wouldn’t be able to spool up enough in time during an overshoot/go around scenario. The trade off was having those fantastic and effective air brakes to slow you down just enough for landing.

Glad you get to fly the F-86. I know you like it a lot. All the while giving us a lot of fun. Yeah, this mission reminds me of Toko--Ri and William Holden. He was Navy though.

This really need mission summary

I suspect that if you are attacking defined infrastructure targets like bridges, once the bridges are actually down there's no point throwing more bombs into the river, & any bombs you still have on your way home can be used on targets of opportunity. Also, my guess is that your wing man who ran out of fuel actually lost all their fuel due to battle damage rather than a heavy throttle hand :-). There's an argument for suppressing air defences as well - perhaps one bomb for the biggest AA concentration, then one bomb for the bridge...

Loving this loads, it's as if you have gone from a WW2 jockey to a Korean War 1 (as they did then) Just 1 thing I've to ask......Who didn't pay attention to orders? ?😉 Whomever it may be, they should "Be standing tall before the man" but BDA and good re-tasking may have saved them. Lol. Going to 'Nam' next i imagine would be a "puka" step in this evolution.

Oh this is cool cause I just started reading a book about the Korean war.

I see the well known yaw axis instability of the F-86E and F models is well and alive in the simulation. God, I hated this particular "feature" in the old "Mig Alley" Sim so very much, it felt like I was flying a piston engined fighter despite being supposedly powered by a high end turbojet. Guess that's what happens when the new variant removes the original full span leading edge slats of the F-86A in the name of high speed controlability. I'm still wondering why they even bothered with the unslatted 6-3 wing instead of simply increasing the wing surface and keeping the slats... *like the F-86F-40 then did anyway!* Mhm, a thought just came to my mind. Wouldn't it be interesting to have a campaign where the Korean War doesn't end in '53? The first heatseeker air-air missiles being used giving the US a very strong advantage for a time, the MiG-17A was already in squadron service with the Soviets in '53 too, the Mig-17F with reheat and the MiG-19 weren't too far away either. On the other side, the F-86D(which would probably have had their Mighty Mouse launchers ripped out and been converted into an F-86K like aircraft very fast if the war kept going) as well as the F-100 already had their first flights, and a load of US Navy Jet designs were coming online as well. Not to mention how the war ongoing would accelerate introduction of the new equipment. Pitting the aircraft designed and used between the Korean and Vietnam war's against each other in actual live fire combat as an extension of the Korean War... and of course all the improvements done to the already well known combatant aircraft. Does anyone else find this premise VERY interesting? And now for something completely different, to my knowledge the Sabres were reserved for the air superiority role... ground attack/support was the job of the Navy's Panther's, Banshee's and Skyraiders, as well as the older Air Force Jets like the F-84 and F-80. Correct me if I am wrong please. Now that I think about it, having the F2H Banshee, F9F Panther, F-84 or F-80(or ideally, ALL OF THEM) with campaigns featuring the early months of the Korean War, flying among other things desperate escort missions for the B-29's against MiG-15's(not bis) in DCS... that would be really something. The period where there were still piston engined fighters flying air superiority and the first Jets appearing in the skies over Korea is one that is sadly not covered much by... well, anything. Except for maybe War Thunder, but despite being fun in SIM EC on occasion, it's where historical accuracy goes to die. :-/ Whoops, I'm rambling off ideas again. My apologies. ^^

Someone has likely recommended it already but for extended a2g guns you can select pairs of guns or all, if I'm strafing I use center guns and save my upper and lower guns in case I get jumped my migs.

China released a film called The Sacrifice last year (amid the height of US-China tension) to commemorate the 57th anniversary of the end of Korean War. It was about a group of Chinese soldiers defending a bridge against American air raid, only the American forces in the film were naval aviation (F4Us mostly) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sacrifice_(2020_film)

Because you complained about it: If you want your wingman to engage the target set by the mission maker, you have to order them to "engage primary and rejoin" not "engage ground targets", because the ground target option will order the AI to search for ground units, i.e. vehicles (!) and engage the highest threat. So that's the reason why they engaged the air defences.

Mikhail Antonov Diary 3 North Korean forces had pinned down a group of Marines and the enemy called in Air support. I got woken up by my Wingman, telling me I need to get in my flight suit and scramble to cover the North Koreans. We got too late to engage the Sabers, but we encountered US Navy Jets. I put a few rounds into one of the jets, and I believed to have see him crash, but I cannot be sure. We will have to wait to see if they see any additional planes on the ground. Maybe I can get my first enemy plane kill!

Was the F-86s actually used for ground attack? From most stories I know they mostly do dogfights? But then again... The number of books I've read and stories I've heard are minimal...
