This is pretty much exactly how the Swedish army taught us that the Hind would be employed against us. An interesting fact that they claimed is that the rockets would most likely be fired at a range great enough that you would not have detected the helicopter by hearing yet. So unless the guy you set to watch for air attack get lucky and spots that tiny dot rising up about 2km away the first indication of an attack is the sound of the rockets impacting. I have been employing the same tactic with the ATGMs and petrovish, but in that case i do not dive on the target and I do it at 5km from the target. It is perfect because it get you up high so that you get better line of sight, and it slows you down so that you get more time finding, selecting and guiding the missile to the target.
@CasmoTV
@CasmoTV 3 года назад
Yeah once you get better you can extend the range out. As a Kiowa guy I’m used to just being really close.
@MrMattumbo

Yeah the range of S-5 rockets is pretty impressive, the Chechens actually modified them to be shoulder fired AT weapons to make up for their lack of ATGMs in the second war. Somehow they managed to lob those things a good couple Km and still score hits often enough to make it worthwhile.
@anzacwargaming1698
@anzacwargaming1698 3 года назад
@@MrMattumbo I think it varied greatly, especially during that time of history. If they had been stored properly sure, but nothing worked in Russia at that time. If you got a batch of rockets that spent a year in a leaky warehouse that did not receive funding to fix the roof you got results like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kTSHyL6RBNU.html 26 seconds into the clip

@@anzacwargaming1698 Yeah the book I read mentioned an account from the Chechens of that happening with their shoulder fired version. Supposedly it zipped around all over the place yet still somehow managed a direct hit on a Russian vehicle lmao (not sure I trust that, but crazy things happen in war). Apparently a lot of the Chechen S-5s were either stolen from various sources or actually scavenged off downed Hinds (apparently they were quite good at shooting them down) so frankly I'm amazed even half of them worked properly coming off a crashed helo.

It's so obvious, why didn't I think of this. Was practicing with unguided rockets and guns yesterday, but ran into the problem of speed control. I started pretty high and ended up diving and risking retreating blade stall every time. Treating it like an A-10 or something, I wanted to build energy, do a diving attack and regain the energy afterwards by pulling up, but this is not a fixed wing aircraft, so that doesn't really work. I tried slowing down before the dive, which kinda worked, but made me very vulnerable due to slow speed at medium altitude. Thank you for this tip. It will definitely help!

This is a really good tutorial for helicopters in general. I'm coming from flying the Gazelle, which is so squishy that strafing you need to attack pretty much defenceless targets only (Just the other day it turns out I performed a bump attack by accident just trying to terrain mask behind trees and got shot down by an enemy T55 in about seven seconds after starting the climb). Switching over to the Hind is a whole different ball game. Looking forwards to the rest of the tactical employment videos!

Great video. One habbit I'm trying to break after flying the KA-50 for over a decade is to stop flying with the collective and fly with the cyclic. That torque change and resulting yaw is something I've been having fun trying to tame. Also, on the return to target and clover turn you did left pedal turns. Do you choose left pedal turns because the natural tendency for the aircraft to want to yaw left? I'd imagine right pedal would require more torque/power from the helicopter.

Very helpful, as always. Question: Doesn't this bump manoeuvre result in making yourself a bit of a big, fat, slow, sitting duck in the sky for enemy fire to take down? I guess the whole point is to do it far enough out that you are out of effective weapons range? But what about the last bit, where you're doing it practically on top of the enemy target? Wouldn't it be better to extend out fast at low level and turn around from a safe distance?
@CasmoTV
@CasmoTV 3 года назад
It’s been used thousands of time in real life. Understand that dcs AI to aircraft fire from tanks and personnel is unnaturally effective. Most people shooting up at aircraft never apply near the amount of lead they need to; a dramatic climb like that, especially with an off axis angle, is bedazzling to rando guy on the ground.

@jubuttib
@jubuttib 3 года назад
@@matswane Not an expert by any means, but here's my two cents: I tested my cruising speeds at various blade angle positions (basically what speeds I ended up at when trimming for level flight at a given height (forget what exactly but well out of ground effect) and there wasn't a huge gain in speed between max and like 80%, I basically hit a bit over 300 km/h and stuck there. Slowing down a bit to around 250 km/h, like Casmo here, is still fast, and you have more options with your controls since you're not already redlining something. Oh, and the reason I'm talking about "speed" when you were talking about collective, higher blade angle => more thrust from the rotor system, which at least in theory means that you can push the nose further down while maintaining enough lift to stay level, and since the rotor is pointing more backwards now you're getting more forward thrust. Of course it's not exactly that simple when you take into account translational lift and the lift from the stub wings (which isn't insignificant). At lower speeds you'll get less lift from those, and must add thrust via the collective to balance it out, but still.

Keep in mind that in addition to automatic ranging, the ASP-17 has a manual range mode. In this mode the computer is calculating a _reverse_ problem, assuming the range you insert on weapon panel. As long as you know the size of the target in meters from the aspect you're attacking from, you can then set the target base with the top left knob on the sight and fire when it fills the space between horizontal bars on the piper. This might be preferred in uneven terrain.

The more I see with the Russian equipment I am more confident that had war broken out in Europe during the 80s. NATO would have won. Good thing cause I was in Fulda where it all was supposed to kickoff. I remember a Hind trying to shadow a cobra along the border. The Hind couldn’t keep up and crashed. After flying the DCS Hind, Now I know why.

@@2t_mxrider it seem the hind is very easy to crash. Not very maneuverable

Also having to close the optics or they will break. Not what we thought it was if accurate, and DCS seems to be very close usually.

Hind easy to crash? Optics will break? Not sure these two reasons were key undermining factors in real world Hind performance, affecting the outcome of the Cold War. This DCS module was released about a week ago. Fly it for at least a couple of years with a commitment not to crash it and a mindset that it’s your only weapon to protect your virtual "motherland", and I’m sure you will appreciate all the hard work that was put in this DCS module...

@@2t_mxrider no, it’s a great product. Don’t get me wrong. DCS always makes great products. It’s the actual real aircraft that has flaws. It’s been modeled great, I just didn’t know it had the limitations on the real MI-24
