The virtual 1st Air Cavalry Division, 229th aviation battalion is the one and only international virtual huey battalion in the world. 229th leader and instructor pilot "Flyer" was kind enough to invite me to a training session on formation flying. As we will see, formation flying is a very hard thing to do, especially in helicopters.
I try to take each flight as if it was a real life one, so I tend to be overly cautious and get scared easily when we need to fly close. During the mission, I thought I was comfortable at first (hover, takeoff, landing and all that jazz have pretty much been mastered) but when it came to flying with other people as a unit... I saw that flying in formation is pretty much summed up in four Hs: Hella Hard, Horrifying and Humbling.
It's not easy to trust the guy in front of you when you haven't flown much with him. You need to get as close as two rotor disk lengths. Whether or not I stayed there was up to whether or not the guy in front of me slowed down or not. It's nerve-racking and very stressful; on one hand you want to do your job and get as close as possible, but on the other hand you don't want to mess up and screw the whole formation/mission, or even worse kill one of your buddies. It's very hard on the ego to see how terrible you can be once you need to do precision flying, and the whole experience made me respect even more the likes of Flyer and Six who did it in real life (as they are real-life helicopter pilots).
But I'm certainly not giving up yet. I'll keep training and try to get better.
Here is a (very instructive) video that we used during briefing. Our training was based on it.

Nice! I was in the 229th AHB back it the 80s...not virtual, of course, and we weren't attached to a cav unit, rather part of the 101st. Cool to see the unit numbers against, even if it's just in dcs.

It was a great practice flight, and it reminds me that I need more practice and more left pedal on landing!

+Decibel “71st AH dB” dB Usually sweating buckets when flying the Huey... it's a very "physical" rotorcraft to fly. But sooo rewarding. :)

+inc0gnit0 You can sign up on their website and see if you want to fly with them. If you want to learn how to fly the Huey how real pilots do it, it's THE place to go. 1stcavdiv.conceptbb.com/

looks like fun - use the trimmer more often, it will totally change the way you fly. i'm constantly hitting the trim button and as a result formation flying is a breeze even with the crappy joystick i have (low resolution and crappy, non precision collective)

Hi Chuck. My name is Bill Richey, I flew with 1st Cav A/229th in VN from 5/70-3/72. Our unit call sign was "Black Bandits" 3rd Saturday of every September the "Bandits" have a reunion. I will pass your great vid. onto our wing. Very well done, in a "Tactical Trail" formation landing in a very tight formation it's hard with the vortex from so many birds was well depicted in your final approach to a "Tac Trail" landing. A great VN painter, Joe Kline, painted a picture of a A/229th formation approach to a LZ that was true to life, yes we held very tight formations, even during a Combat Assault to a LZ and treetop level to the LZ from the FB out of Tay Ninh 13 clicks off Cambodian border in Fishhook area in 3 core. Well done Chuck, very well done. You took me back in time. Thank You

Wow I hadn't seen your post for months. Glad you liked it. Yes, the tac trail is super hard indeed. It just gives me that much more respect for the men who did it in real life.
