Some good info about the compacting options for this tarp with the flat versus rolling option, Makes me want to bite the bullet and risk this for a winter set up in the folded way. Thank you for an informative video.
Really interesting Bex what you say about folding the tarps, and the explanation of the flat or cylindrical stuff sack, I have the DD 3x3 MC and never fold or roll, I just stuff it in... but as you point out it does make it very cylindrical and an awkward space wasting shape that way. I'm going to try the fold on the next outing... makes sense. Cheers mate. Lee
HOLD FIRE... Wait to see this Fridays double bill feature before the folded tarp method. I too stuff instead of rolling or folding, and flattening the stuffed tarp can be achieved by standing on the stuff stack until flat.... The superlight tarp however can not be stuffed in to its original pack, (to tight and awkward)....Hence the follow up vid on stowing the superlight tarp, coming this Friday.... I like the polyester 3x3 DD tarp too, I use the coyote brown, TOP TIP ...try upscaling the stuff sack for the DD poly tarp, to a bergen rocket pocket liner, twice the size of the DD stuff sack, to make loose filling easier, yet once loose stuffed and stood on takes on the same mass volume to the DD stuff sack, and forms better to the individuals inner pack space...Thanx for watching Lee, see you Friday. Tents and tarps only cut the wind chill factor, the ambient temp remains the same as the outside temp, minus the wind chill....The superlight tarp would not with stand a wind storm, and the peg loop patches could rip out. That is where a polyester tarp comes into its own. Less lightly to rip, and peg tie outs heaver sewn.... both tarps will cut the wind equally, but one is stronger, a trash bag will do the same job in a survival situation, a good tarp or basha is a must have....all the best....Bex
Bex , thanks for sharing. Stacking makes more sense than rolling . I need a good tarp . On a side note , which bcb stove do you prefer the mk1 or mk 2 ? What are your views on gators , do you ever use them . Great to visit again , atb brother !
Slacking flat in a pack makes more sense to me anyway. There is a comparison series coming up soon, the BCB stoves feature in one of those vids. I do use gators in wet conditions, when walking in long grasses and muddy fields. I also use yetti gators in winter. Overall I don't use them too often however....Thanx for watching ....Bex
Nylon has less strength compared to polyester as it stretches. It will need babying more than polyester. If you look after it, its okay for summer, nylon will sag in colder temps.....b
I have both tarps I have found the lightweight ripstop to be quite fragile will all sorts of micro tears that i have patched with tape and silicone sealer Not pleased
tarp tears and air mat holes, try Tenacious Tape I use sil-nylon in low wind summer, and in more harsh invionmentsnd poly tarp or basha. Will keep my eye on them...
Compared to actual silicone coated (both sides) 6.6 nylon fabric...ALL the ripstop nylon fabrics available today are less forgiving. The fabric I mention was commonly used in the 90's and was the original "silnylon". It was heavyier (at least 1.3 ounces per square yard) and VERY slippery . Few companies offer shelters made with the good stuff any longer, Lightheart gear and Mountain Laurel Designs come to mind. Sorry to hear that your DD's are not the "bees-knees" for your application.
A snake skin would reduce a lot of the set-up, as you can store your tarp/ridgeline/prusik loops etc,. hanked up at each end,. simply open grab a hank, tie off to a tree, and repeat for the other side. .the same applies to the hammock,. I have the Superlight Hammock Mozi-net and Superlight Tarp (whoopie slings/tree huggers) ...all setup inside a DD snake skin,. ...around 30 second setup /pack up.
