"Whenever you gain life" is much more intuitive grammar than "If a spell or ability would cause its controller to gain life" like in Rain of Gore. I'm glad that Lifelink works with Nykthos as intended
@daviegourevitch

It's quite a bit longer though :/

lifelink isn't ability, it is modification of damage, so damage causes you to gain life, not triggered ability

Another interesting detail is that cards that set your life total to a certain number actually have you gain or lose enough life to get to the desired amount. So, if Amy controls Nykthos Paragon and casts Loxodon Lifechanter having the latter enter the battlefield and activating its ability in response to its "enter the battlefield" trigger, she's going to be able to put a lot of +1/+1 counters on each creature she controls.

I think “Whenever you gain life” is quite intuitive for how the CR intends it. If the card wanted it to work the way some people (mistakenly) think it should work, it would have said “Whenever you gain 1 life”.
@Tharkon
@Tharkon 8 месяцев назад
And then it would still not work that way, it would just not trigger at all when you gain life in any amount other than 1. There are some cards that do use a phrasing that would give that result, Nykthos Paragon is an example of that, it uses "that many". Unless I am misunderstanding what the way some people think it should work is.

Would Strionic Resonator allow you to trigger Nykthos Paragons life gain ability more than once?
@robertbauerle5592
@robertbauerle5592 3 года назад
I'm not sure if this was covered, but say in the instance that was presented, one of the nykthos paragon creatures had two +1/+1 counters on it. So one of them was going to deal 6 damage, and the other would deal 4. Can you select which instance of lifegain will trigger the nykthos so that you get 6 +1/+1 counters instead of 4 from both of the paragon triggers?
@rileysinclair1110
@rileysinclair1110 3 года назад
You may, as when you gain life from either source, the ability triggers for both instances. Its the choice to put the counters on that you may only do once, so you are able to choose to not gain life to the four damage, and yes to the six damage. So yes, if you had two, you could put +12/+12 onto all of your creatures.

If you were to gain life again later in the turn maybe you cast Revitalize or something), would Nykthos Paragon put a trigger on the stack that doesn't do anything? Or does it see that it has already done its job for the day? Asking specifically for Judge tower
@JudgingFtW
@JudgingFtW 3 года назад
Interestingly, no. They added a special rule to keep it from triggering again in that case. I'm guessing this rule is especially for Judge Tower. Or Magic online. But probably Judge Tower. CR 603.2h A triggered ability may have an instruction followed by “Do this only once each turn.” This ability triggers only if its source’s controller has not yet taken the indicated action that turn.

Speaking of first Strike shenanigans, An episode about ninjitsu and first Strike/Double strike would be nice. Amy attacks nick with a Black Knight, Nick says no blocks. Amy wants to ninjitsu in a ninja after her black knight deals combat damage. Can she? What happens? What if the ninja has or doesn't have first Strike also?
@namename8004
@namename8004 3 года назад
So to answer your questions, let me explain the combat phase a bit. It consists of six steps. Beginning of Combat, Declare Attackers, Declare Blockers, First Strike, Normal Damage, and End of Combat. You can only activate a Ninjutsu ability during the combat after blockers have been declared. You can do this as many times as you'd like and there's no reason you wouldn't be able to return another Ninja with Ninjutsu ability. The First Strike Damage Step only occurs if there is a creature with First Strike assigned as either an attacker or blocker. So you could have a First Strike creature deal damage, then Ninjutsu it out to have that Ninja deal damage in the Normal Damage Step. There are no Ninjas with First Strike, but if you had the white Archetype from the Theros block in play, for instance, a creature with First Strike that does not have Double Strike cannot deal damage in the Normal Damage Step.
@SpitefulAZ
@SpitefulAZ 3 года назад
@@namename8004 you are incorrect at the end. "Then, in the second, all creatures in combat that have not yet dealt combat damage or have Double Strike deal combat damage (this means creatures that lose Double Strike after dealing combat damage do not deal damage again)." A creature with first Strike that did not deal damage during the first Strike combat damage step will deal damage during the 2nd combat damage step. Therefore a player can deal damage with an unblocked first Strike creature, and then ninjitsu in a ninja and deal damage again (even if the ninja has first Strike somehow)
@namename8004
@namename8004 3 года назад
Yeah, I guess it looks like there's rules to prevent players from giving opposing creatures First Strike after the First Strike Damage Step to stop them from dealing damage in the Normal Damage Step. So creatures with First Strike can deal damage in the Normal Damage Step if they didn't already deal damage in the First Strike Damage Step.

@@namename8004 exactly! The judge academy modules says the rule is set this way in order to prevent exactly that.

How about a situation where opponent has a 0/1 Ornithopter with Indestructible. I attack with 4/6 Nykthos Paragon with Deathtouch and Lifelink. Do I receive 1 life or 4 life?
@vividplasma227
@vividplasma227 3 года назад
Adding on, you gain 4 life because you deal 4 damage, the damage just doesn’t actually kill the ornithopter. The same is true of the Paragon had trample, except the defending player would take THREE damage, since you only need to assign 1 to the ornithopter to assign lethal damage.

This is CR being just bad. Players all know that combat damage happens simultaneously, and you gain life all at once at the same time. So what's the logic for CR deciding to override actual card text "whenever you gain life" and make it actually something else (basically "whenever a source causes you to gain life")? Cards should do what they say, and in this case CR is not doing its job.
@namename8004
@namename8004 3 года назад
Just because you have a hard time understanding rules does not mean the rules are bad. All I see you do is come into these comments and complain about how you don't like the rules. If you don't like them, don't play. Or find people willing to play the incredibly convoluted format of "Rules Tomasz Likes". That format sounds like it has a pretty narrow appeal, though.

@@namename8004 Fortunately WotC is not made of pretentious assholes, and they generally try their best to make rules intuitive. Non-intuitive stuff pretentious assholes love like the infamous "damage on stack" or more recently "cascade into higher cmc side" often get removed from the game, so rules make more sense. Overwhelming majority of players just read the cards and basic rulebook and don't memorize CR, so if things don't work like cards say, this is a problem. WotC aren't perfect at it, but they definitely try, and we should definitely also discuss how rules can be improved.
@namename8004
@namename8004 3 года назад
Rules being changed to "Easier for Tomasz to Understand" is not necessarily an improvement. The rule involving the interaction between the new Tibalt and Cascade was changed for power level concerns, not because you found it unintuitive. A game needs complexity to be interesting. If you find Magic too complex, perhaps try checkers.
