I really do love the way you take you initial example and then flesh it out with additional scenarios to more fully explore the nuances of the topic you're covering. Thanks for another great DDR as always!

Essentially, whenever a card uses its own name to refer to the game object it is currently representing, you can think of it as if it really says "this object". I think a lot of cards would be easier to parse if instead of using their full name, they said "this creature" or whatever, but maybe there's a rules reason for why cards don't get templated that way. (for example, imagine if instead of Cenote Scout reading "When Cenote Scout enters the battlefield, it explores." it instead read "When this creature enters the battlefield, it explores.") Edit: I guess this might cause messy templatings when taking into consideration that permanents can change type and still need to refer to themselves accurately, without sounding overly technical.

I really agree with using "this" in most cases. Cards with backup already do this since it is intended to let other things use their abilities. It just saves so much space. Small nitpick on the first point: if it says something along the lines of "a card named ____", such as the ability on Shadowborn Apostles, then it refers to any card with that name.

2:07 The second Sunfrill Imitator usually goes away due to the Legend Rule!
@kirby1387
@kirby1387 2 месяца назад
2:07 not too important but there would be two legendary creatures named sunfrill imitator so one would get removed by the legend rule (unless there was a mirror box/gallery or another card along that vein)

@kirby1387

@@victhefoxygamer_6180 The 2 Sunfrill Imitators' ability will make it a copy of Kalamax except they have the name "Sunfrill Imitator" and with their own ability added on top of Kalamax's. This means that they both have the typing "Legendary Creature - Elemental Dinosaur" and have the name "Sunfrill Imitator". The legend rule is a rule in the game where if two or more legendary permanents (controlled by the same player) share the same name, you choose one to keep and the rest are sent to the graveyard (this is a state based action). As there are two legendary "Sunfrill Imitator" the legend rule applies here so you choose one Sunfrill Imitator to keep and send the other to the graveyard. Mirror Box/ Mirror Gallery are cards which have "the legend rule doesn't apply" so in this case it's fine to have 2 or more legendary creatures which share the same name. As I'm not a judge I might have missed some technical wordings but I think this gets the idea across.
@RibusPQR
@RibusPQR 2 месяца назад
The "Legend Rule" says that if you control two or more legendary permanents with the same name, you must place all but one of them into the graveyard. Kalamax is legendary, so Sunfrill Imitator will become legendary as it copies it. If you have both Sunfrill Imitators copy Kalamax, then you have two legendary creatures named Sunfrill Imitator, so you have to graveyard one of them.

If I'm reading it correctly, both Kalamax and Imitator will still get a +1/+1 counter for the Imitator copied spell, because Kalamax looks at any copied spell, not only the ones they copy.

Correct.

In fact, I believe the deck Kalamax came in had other ways to copy spells and other payoffs for copying spells as well, and with a few small upgrades you can do some easy infinites (if you cast any number of "copy target spell" effects as your first instant in a turn when Kalamax is tapped, you can have the copy target the original, creating another copy you can point at the original, ad infinitum, giving Kalamax a +1/+1 counter each time. The final copy can target whatever spell the original is targeting to break the loop.

Gollum, Obsessed Stalker is a fun/solid example for when a card referring to its own name isn't tied to the card itself. Gollum's second ability is: "At the beginning of your end step, each opponent dealt combat damage this game by a creature named Gollum, Obsessed Stalker loses life equal to the amount of life you gained this turn." If you had a Maskwood Nexus turning Gollum, Obsessed Stalker into a dinosaur and then had Sunfrill Imitator become a copy of it... Sunfrill Imitator wouldn't mark any of your opponents to lose life, but Gollum, Obsessed Stalker would be able to mark an opponent for both creatures.

Yeah. Importantly, it is worded that way so it can remember who it has hit even if it dies and comes back (perhaps since it's a commander).

Idk if this is actually something worth doing, but I do think it would have been a neat touch in this instance to actually display Imitator as tapped to show the difference and match the dialogue happening. Still like your stuff, and this is how hard I had to scrape to find room to improve, so even if this doesn't get implemented, still a quality show :> Hope you have a good day too Dave

As cool as that would be, it would also make the card significantly harder to read. Not really worth it imho.

Perhaps a mild arena tap, not a proper 90° tap. That should still be easy to read.

So after getting the right answer for the right reason (it's not often, give me my moment) I'm now wondering why cards that refer to themselves are still templated using the card name. Surely it'd simplify things to switch to a "this card" or "this permanent" wording? (Obviously "this creature" could enable undesirable interactions with type-changing spells).

I´d like to tink, that it´s about vanity of the creature :)
@seandun7083
@seandun7083 Месяц назад
"this creature" would still work for the same reason "cardname" does. Honestly I think that they probably should make that change at some point since it would save so much room. Many cards with backup already use "this creature" since the mechanic lets them loan out abilities to other things.

If there were two imitators copying kalamax you would have to sacrifice one for the legend rule unless you control an ability that makes the legend rule not apply.

Something Ive been curious about is an instance where I have both Sunfrill wnd Kalamax tapped do I copy twice? Also, if I have two Predator Ooze, and they both attack and kill a creature, do they both get four +1/+1 counters or would each Ooze only get two?
@z_o_i_n_k_s
@z_o_i_n_k_s 2 месяца назад
Yes, followed by no. The first instant you cast is still "your first instant" and will trigger both abilities accordingly. From the same ruling at 1:57, two Predator Oozes would not trigger each other's ability through their own damage. They would have to read "Whenever a creature dealt damage by a creature named Predator Ooze this turn dies..." In addition to their attack trigger, each ooze would end up with two +1/+1 counters.

Why does the third ability of Thornling say "is indestructible" instead of "gains indestructible", like the first 2 abilities?
@seandun7083
@seandun7083 Месяц назад
They have gone back and forth over the years about whether indestructible is a keyword ability that goes on creatures, or not. If you check the Oracle rules then you will see that it is now a keyword. Unblockable is something they went the other way on so rather than saying "X is unblocked" they say "X can't be blocked". The difference is that with the old wording boros charm said "Permanents you control are indestructible this turn" and would affect things played after it since it doesn't give the ability to the permanents, but was an independent continuous affect. The new wording, "permanents you control gain indestructible until end of turn" gives the ability indestructible to each of your permanents meaning that if you played a land after it, it would not have indestructible. The new wording also means that Dress Down would remove indestructible if you cast it after the ability resolves. Sorry if that was a bit incomprehensive. I wasn't playing (at least at the level where I followed rules updates) back when the change was made so this is mostly what I heard somewhere later. TLDR: the outdated way it's worded means the ability makes it so that it can't be destroyed this turn. The updated wording gives it the ability indestructible which has the same effect.

How does Hamza and Heirophant Bio-titan work with its cost? Will its cost be reduced before you remove counters?

Hamza's cost reduction is locked in by the time you actually start removing counters to pay for the spell. Dargo and Stinkdrinker Daredevil work the same way

I have a request: what happens when you go to combat, attack with Wyll, Blade of Frontiers and Delina, Wild Mage, then trigger Delina's ability targeting Wyll. After each successful trigger, the odds of the next trigger being successful also increase. Eventually, you reach a point where failing is incredibly unlikely. However, Delina's ability is not a may. Since it's nondeterministic, you can't declare a draw, so are you forced to simply resolve the triggers for eternity? Edit: Nevermind, just read the errata, it's a may ability now
