If Amy's 4/4 had deathtouch, we would have a third interesting scenario. Since 1 damage counts as lethal but the game basically resets that when SBA:s are checked, Amy would have to deal at least 1 damage in the first AND regular damage step ^^ For a total of 6 face damage!
Had the issue of double strike and trample vs protection the other day. According to this video we ruled it correctly based on our combined understanding of magics rules forutnately :D great video and clarification!
Great video, Dave, thanks! I feel like there’s a lot more about damage/indestructible/protection/1st- and double strike/damage replacement effects i need to understand. Any articles you wrote on your blog with a bunch of scenarios in that regard that you could link here? Thanks!
I'm curious, if you Doublecast a Desperate Ritual with a Desperate Ritual spliced onto the first? Do you get the extra mana on the copy, or does it only copy the original (pre splice)?
Copying a spell copies every choice made for that spell. This includes any alternative costs that may have been paid(such as overload), the value for any X in the cost, any additional costs that were paid(such as kicker), modes that were chosen and the targets of the spell. That last part is why copy spells always include a line specifying that you may change targets for the copy. Splice is included in what would be copied. I believe it would fall under the "additional costs" category.
Question, If Amy's 4/4 creature had its Trample removed with something like Archetype of Aggression, would the creature be able to assign damage to the opponent during normal strike, after the creature is assigned lethal damage during the first strike?
all damage would be "excess damage" in that case. The trick is to remember that indestructible doesn't mean "noting is lethal", it means "Lethal damage is ignored"
Trample + indestructible / trample + protection rules are really non-intuitive and they should just fix them by making indestructible / protection creature eat infinite damage, so nothing tramples through. There's really no downside to fixing it.
it's not intuitive because all of trample is handled during damage assignment and not when damage is dealt. And players are unaware that there's even a difference between dealing damage and assigning damage. to fix it WotC would have to rewrite all of sections 510 & 702.19a as well as parts of sections 508 & 509. Also there would be a massive power bump to all indestructible and protection creatures if they made that change.

@@ozrithclay6921It's not really "massive power bump", this interaction happens in like 1 game in a 100. There would be a few more outs to Death's Shadow with Temur Battle Rage attack mostly.
@ to be able to block a 40/40 trample with your 0/1 indestructible and take no damage feels like a pretty massive power bump to me.. Also, if you play Commander, indestructible vs trample happens much more often!

@@ubermusli It's literally indestructible so how are you trampling over it? You shouldn't be able to. And it's not like 0/1 indestructible creatures are overrunning any format, it's fine, just make rules more intuitive.
