There is some non correct statements in this video. GDDR2 and DDR2 uses basically the same structure, well they use the same basic modulation metod, but the GDDR2 is a port memory (channel terminator) but the DDR2 is a buss memory (non channel terminating). This is also true about GDDR3 and DDR3. But GDDR4 and GDDR5 uses the same modulation method (one generation newer than GDDR3) both uses the same. The difference between 4 and 5 is not the modulation but accessing and caching. DDR4 uses the same modulation and a similar caching/accessing method of GDDR5, so GDDR5 and DDR4 is quite similar. Also, DDR4 is the first (non G) DDR memory using channel termination. Its a ported technology. So DDR4 and GDDR5 is quite simular. There is some difference in addressing and GDDR5 is made for soldered (BGA) mounting only. You can´t use (high speed) GDDR5 in a socket, that's the main reason why its not available for CPU, because on a CPU you want to buy separate memory, but in a console, it does not matter (why PS4 uses GDDR5 and Xbox 360 uses GDDR3). Is a common miss understanding that GDDR5 have slower latency than DDR3 (as falsely stated in the video). GDDR5 have a higher CAS latency, but that's because it have a higher transfer rate. CAS latency is invert related to the transfer-rate. DDR3 and GDDR5 have i practical application the exact same time period latency. The reason is that GDDR 1-5 and DDR 1-3 uses the exact same type of ram. Every single chip is a SRAM modul. The speed an CAS is depended on the number of SRAM modules that is multiplexed inside the chip. The SRAM memory is not getting any faster or slower regardless of if its mounted inside a GDDR or DDR. The latency is always the same (for the same quality and line-width). The speed of the memory is increased by having a higher number of multiplexed unit. This increases the CAS time, but NOT the REAL time. In the olden days people often upgraded there memory's when the memory got cheaper. Buying two modules up front, and adding 2 more later on. To make this possible you have to use a bus solution. A bus solution consumes a lot of power and is slower than a port solution. In a modern computer its only the memory uses a bus solution, witch is ironic because that memory uses the highest bandwidth in total. A DDR3 uses 64 pins + addressing comparied with a PCI-E GPU that uses 8 or 16 pins in total. Memory consumes a lot of pins in the processor socket (and chip) in term dictating a minimum die size of the chip. (in the K7 AMD solved this by making the chip realty rectangular). A additional reason why bus memory was prefered was that a bus DIMM can have 2 or more stacks of memory chip on a single DIMM. Some higher capacity DIMM have 1 stack on both side, and some might have 2 stacks on both side. Making possible for a PC of having up to 16 stacks of modules on one single Chanel. With port memory its only possible to have one stack per channel. Now days its no problem in making a 2GB chip or in same cases 4GB chip, thats why the PS4 can have 8 GB of GDDR because it uses brand new higher capacity GDDR modules. DDR4 solves a lot of this problem, both lowering the number of pins needed and raising speed (witch will enable CPU to continue using a 128 bit memory system in the future), also enabling cheaper processors of using a 64 bit system with good performance. Thow DDR4 still uses socket, the maximum frequency is limited, so the performance will not match GDDR5, but it will be quite close, aproximlty 20% slower. We probably have to wait for ReRAM or MRAM to get a on Chip RAM memory (for PC, in phones it already exist)

Thanks, the thing is about modulation that most people think of modulation of some thing of the past and dial up connections. A better response might be to say that there are *many different kinds of memory* with different purposes. Each kind of memory has a particular latency, bandwidth, persistence and cost. Most of the memory in your system is on a hard drive of some kind. It may be on a HDD or SSD, which have advantages and disadvantages depending on what you're doing with them. Generally, the SSD is faster, but costs far more and has less capacity. There are also different kinds of ram which are used to hold programs you've opened. It's AMAZINGLY fast compared to even an array of SSDs or HDDs. Why don't we use it for everything if it's so much faster? Well, ram is hundreds of times more expensive per gigabyte, and the data doesn't persist when power is removed. RAM has a different purpose than hard drives. But there are even FASTER forms of memory in your computer. In fact, there is memory that makes even the fastest RAM look pathetic. That would be the CPU cache. This memory is integrated right into the chunk of silicone that your CPU is printed on. The latency is tiny, and the access speeds are many times faster than your ram. Why don't we store more in the cache? Because it's by far the most expensive type of memory, and requires a lot of upkeep and power to keep running. Each of these types of memory has been engineered for a different purpose. Just like DDR and GDDR.

That is why high frequency DDR ram creates such a drastic difference. This allows the GPU cores to run at a much faster pace, thus buffering through large files easier. High Frequency ram doesn't matter much with CPUs because that deals on a smaller scale there speeding things up may not be an option.

OK... the basic idea is that a CPU can run just by itself in a system, however a GPU can't. it is an add in card that is made specifically to handle graphics. as for clock speeds, most of the time is you turn your clock-speed higher your temperatures will go higher, and also GPU's are for a very particular use and so they would have more power than a CPU ONLY IN THAT PROCESSING CATEGORY. I hope this answered your question, if not I'm sure TQ will see your suggestion.

Nikolai Azerbaijan well it can be very beneficial but not in the sense of the hardware. with proper optimization having gddr5 can be a good choice. If game devs tap into huma, objects stored in the shared ram doesn't have to be sent through pcie lanes to the gpu. and there is less memory references to deal with, since the cpu data can be sent into memory can be instantly manipulated by the gpu (normally the data is sent from cpu into the frame buffer then the gpu gets to work on it)

The PS4 architecture is approximately 30% faster than a PC with everything matching. It does not have to copy or move the data around in the memory and both the CPU and GPU can work on it at the same time. It will take 12 months for the big 1st party devs to learn how to use it well though. The PS is a less powerful system than a top end PC but this build is literally the easiest system devs have ever had to work with. Sony is hoping that along with the VR headset the easy access for the devs. to the system will make it a must-have for all gamers.
@Leyvin
@Leyvin 10 лет назад
The PlayStation 4 does use GDDR5, which really the main reason they put this down is because well as a Gamer you have no idea what the difference is... all you see is well GDDR5 has a 5, while DDR3 has a 3... 5 > 3 thus PlayStation Better! Or at least that is what the Marketing Dept. at Sony are hoping you will think. Now this gets a little tricky to explain, but basically the number assigned to them (i.e. DDR2, DDR3, GDDR5, etc...) actually relates to the number of lanes available. Image it like a Motorway (Freeway), with Data being the Cars on it. So obviously it makes sense that more Lanes = More Cars, so there for more Data! \o/ Only the thing is that the Motorway is powering Electric Cars running on it, so the more Lanes you have the Slower the Cars have to Drive because there is only so much Electricity to power them. As such while you might have 3 Lanes of Cars Driving at 100MPH on the DDR3 Motorway, on the GDDR5 one you have 5 Lanes driving at 70MPH. What is even more important here is what happens when these Cars reach their destination.... you can imagine this as a Toll Area at the end of the Motorway before entering the City (Processor) Now natively Processors only support 128-bit (i.e. 1 Lane) Data Bus, but when DDR 2 was introduced; AMD brought in Hyper-Transport, which allowed for 2x 128-bit ... this was later expanded when DDR 3 became available to 3x 128-bit. It actually does work almost exactly like a Toll Area too, handling several data lanes at once... serving each Lane so that they perfectly merge into a single Lane without any slow-down. Still if we were to say use GDDR4 / 5 instead, what we would end up with would be a Traffic Jam because there are too many Lanes of Traffic trying to Merge. GPUs don't have this issue as they natively run at 384 - 512-bit ... so there is no need to even have the Toll Area, especially as you match the GDDR3 - 5 with the native Bit Rate of the GPU. Now what was said in the Video about GDDR and DDR in terms of design, is well semi-true. Remember System Memory is by design more General Purpose, so whoever builds the PC can chose the specifications of your Memory. Low-Latency (measured in CLK Rating) is great for Multi-Task Environments, where-as you can also get High-Bandwidth (measured in CAS Rating) which is far better for Large Data Transfers (e.g. Gaming) With Graphics Memory, as you can no longer swap it out (used to be able to back in the 90s) really they just chose a setup based upon the price-range the card is aimed at. Budget Cards tend to get Latency Focused as they're assumed they'll be used for general Windows / Business / Multi-Media stuff, where-as Gaming / High End Cards tend to get Transfer focused to allow for massive file transfers. It is under the hood actually identical to System Memory, with the one exception it never supports additional features like XMP - which I'm just not going to explain here but it's basically a good way of getting Low-Latency Memory to also support Large Transfers. (extraordinary important for Gaming or Video Encoding) Still you might be wondering... "Alright, I think I understand how Memory works now - but this still doesn't explain why the Xbox One uses DDR3 while the PS4 uses GDDR5" And well, unfortunately I don't know the hardware specifications of the PS4 APU unfortunately - so I can't tell you if it's specially designed with a larger Native Bus than is usually on the A12 "Jaguar" APU to make use of the extra Data Lanes or if (and judging by what Sony have previously done) a simple case of an engineer / executive believing it is better thus it should have it regardless if there is a point or not. I could point to some absolutely puzzling design decisions about the PS3 and PS2 where to this day I still cannot explain to you why they would deliberately include something that could never properly be utilised by the system because of the hardware design. This said given that the PS4 does use the System Memory as a Shared GPU / CPU Memory Space, including where the Frame (Back) Buffer is stored (screen output) then it does make sense to use GDDR5. Microsoft on the other hand opted to include 32MB of eSRAM, which is basically dedicated memory built-in to the GPU component(s) of the APU to handle this then use the cheaper and more reliable DDR3. Which suits their console far more given it does run on Desktop Windows 8, so it realistically needs the Low-Latency a bit more than High Bandwidth. Really at the end of the day were not talking about a major difference right now in terms of performance, but in a couple of years when Developers are trying to really squeeze performance out of these machines the design of the Xbox One lends itself far better to this - while the PS4 has a good chance of being CPU (well APU I guess lol) bound in terms of Performance.

Does anyone know if these differences may account for why Microsoft went with DDR3 on Xbox One instead of GDDR5 like Sony did on PS4? Does DDR3 work better with ESRAM which is meant to overpower PS4 when Microsoft integrates the Xbox One with Directx 11.2 and tiled resources?

toteu000 No, not really. The PS4 uses an APU, which is a graphics card and CPU in the same thing (It's more complex than that, is basically the idea). Computers have these (A lot of the AMD CPUs are really APUs). And if I shoved 8 GB of GDDR5 into a computer with an APU and no graphics card (The reason people like APUs is that they do graphics better than simply a CPU, so that they don't need a GPU as much), it would basically work the same as a PS4. But that would be dumb.
