DE 1429 has been on loan to the Weka Pass Railway from the Diesel Traction Group, Ferrymead since September 2015 as a shunting locomotive for the railway while Dsa 276 is out of action. On Saturday 20th May 2017, there was an opportunity for railfans to capture the 1952 English Electric built locomotive hard at work on the Weka Pass Railway, quite a bit away from her regular home at Ferrymead. The day saw two photographers trips up the line, the first with the DE alone on a passenger train running to the 6.5km peg. The second train provided railfans the chance to capture the DE paired with the railway's Dg's 791 & 770, a triple header combination never seen before to Waikari. In the evening, DE 1429 operated a dinner train up the railway to Waikari where the railfans had a bite to eat at the town's Star & Garter Hotel before returning to Glenmark in the dark. Throughout the day, we catch up with DE 1429 & the two Dg's hard at work along the railway and exclusive cab footage in DE 1429, plus coverage of English Electric in the dark, enjoy New Zealand English Electric motive power at its finest!
(Please excuse the wind noise in some of the footage, it was blowing a strong southerly breeze during the majority of the day!)
