How do you de-cock your crossbow after a hunt? If you’re in the market for a new crossbow and you’ve done your research, you may have seen that some crossbows have an anti dry-fire mechanism which prevents the trigger from being pulled or the safety taken off unless a bolt is loaded in the bow. This, along with the complex ways of releasing the tension on any crossbow are probably some of the reasons people often gravitate towards compound bows (besides just personal preference).
Well I think I’ve found a way to simplify things, at least a little bit. In this video, I’ll explain three different ways the manufacturers suggest de-cocking your bow, and then I’ll show you my method.
I feel like it’s a much safer way to release the tension that puts less strain on the strings. Ultimately, I hope this video will help you to get more use out of your crossbow and enjoy it more. This may also help in the decision making process if you're thinking about buying a crossbow.

***Note that this is just one suggestion of several methods to decock a crossbow. Test this out at your own risk, preferably not when you’re already in the field. Not trying to get anyone hurt here, so as always, practice crossbow safety. Make sure hooks are in place and you're pulling tension on the sting so that you control the system when you let the string down. DO NOT use a full length crossbow bolt to decock this way, and DO NOT TRY THIS WITH A BROADHEAD.

Also, DO NOT under any circumstances wrap the string around your hand to get leverage. It will squeeze your hand like a pencil thin boa constrictor. USE THE ROPE HANDLE.***
